Not cool: Japanese police sweat over surge in theft of air conditioners
A surge in theft of outdoor air-conditioning units in
Japan , especially in the suburban areas of the country's eastern Kanto region, has left authorities struggling to track down the perpetrators.
Last year, the country saw 3,397 cases, a dramatic 13-fold jump from just 255 in 2020, the Asahi newspaper reported, citing the National Police Agency (NPA).
The number has doubled annually since 2020, rising from 442 in 2021 to 819 in 2022 and 1,717 in 2023, according to NPA data.
Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, reported the highest number of stolen outdoor air-conditioning units last year with 594 cases, followed closely by Saitama at 563 and Chiba at 402.
In comparison, metropolitan cities such as Tokyo and Osaka saw only 60 and 101 theft cases, respectively, which police said meant that thieves tended to avoid urban areas given the higher risk of detection.

According to the NPA, rising copper prices could have fuelled the surge in crimes, as outdoor air-conditioning units often have copper pipes.

Hong Kong hostel manager charged by ICAC over alleged HK$900,000 theft
Hong Kong's anti-corruption watchdog has charged a hostel manager with allegedly stealing more than HK$900,000 (US$114,651) from his employer by altering booking records and making false claims about outstanding payments. The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said on Wednesday that Li Kei-tat, 39, formerly an assistant lodge manager at Caritas-Hong Kong, faced a total of eight charges, including one count of an agent using a document with intent to deceive his principal, six counts of theft, and one count of fraud. The watchdog said Li was responsible for front desk operations at Caritas Oswald Cheung International House in Aberdeen, which included collecting payments and inputting booking information into the computer system between July 2021 and June 2023. In early 2023, Caritas discovered unsettled guest payments amounting to more than HK$1.6 million, prompting an internal investigation. Li was subsequently asked to submit an incident report. One of the charges against Li alleges that he submitted a false statement in this report during the internal investigation. He claimed his mobile phone number belonged to a representative of an organisation that owed Caritas more than HK$1.6 million. The ICAC asserts that Li stole six separate payments from Caritas, totalling around HK$880,000, leading to the theft charges.

Japan policeman accidentally shoots patrol car near Osaka Expo
A police officer in Japan has accidentally discharged a firearm inside a vehicle parked near the venue of the World Expo in Osaka. The 28-year-old male riot squad member mistakenly pulled the trigger when putting the pistol back in its case at around 7pm on Sunday, police said, adding that no one was injured. He had just finished a security shift at the international event in the western Japanese city, according to the Osaka police. The handgun was fired downwards, with the single discharged bullet making a hole in a seat and leaving a mark where it appears to have been embedded in the floor of the vehicle, the police statement said.
