'I had to snort pure glucose': Inside BBC's outstanding 80s crime drama
It's a first-world problem but, while I'm at a chilly, damp Twickenham Studios on Valentine's Day, I can't help wishing the team from The Gold had invited me on set a couple of weeks later.
When the Bafta-nominated first series finished, several of the criminals who had stolen and laundered the bullion from the 1983 Brink's-Mat heist – at the time, the biggest robbery in British history – were behind bars, yet DCI Brian Boyce and his compact task force were realising that half the gold remained unaccounted for.
The second series rejoins the money-laundering trail in the late 1980s as it splits between the UK and the Isle of Man and the sunnier climes of Tenerife (which also doubles as South America and the British Virgin Islands).
'We'll be filming in Tenerife for eight weeks,' grins Hugh Bonneville, who returns as the dogged, incorruptible Boyce.
'It's a much bigger canvas this time – we shot in some buildings in London that clearly were built on Brink's-Mat money for season one, but this time you see the money leaking out into Tenerife and the tax havens.
'You begin to realise it funded drug imports and the beginnings of the ecstasy boom in the UK. The ripple effect of this one event in November 1983 is remarkable.'

I watch on as Boyce subjects a quivering suspect to a fearsome grilling – with retirement drawing near, the copper clearly intends to leave on a high, and Hugh clearly relished the opportunity to talk to Boyce himself, now in his mid-80s but still a formidable figure.
'Brian took me and [series creator] Neil Forsyth out to lunch as we were starting season one, so I reciprocated after it had been on. He likes to talk about the old days and took me through his entire career: he was on the squad that knocked down the door to get Ronnie and Reggie Kray!
'He was very courteous and thanked us for respecting the way they went about their work, which was very heartening. You get the sense he was a good leader who absolutely relied on teamwork.'
Boyce and his team – returning coppers Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer), Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) plus maverick newcomer Tony Lundy (Stephen Campbell Moore) – have two main quarries. One is Charlie Miller (Sam Spruell), a minor villain briefly glimpsed in series one waiting it out in Spain for the dust to settle. Now, though, he's back to claim his stash from its Cornish hiding place.
'It's a cat-and-mouse chase around the world as Charlie tries to use his ill-gotten gains to go legit, to be taken seriously and become a financial player,' says Sam.
'He has a strategy and he's very determined – no matter what goes wrong, he will make the best of it. He just keeps going despite the knockbacks, and as an actor I could relate to that, even admire him for it.'
Miller, Sam concedes, doesn't quite have the capacity to realise his aspirations, and brings in Joshua Maguire's crooked lawyer Douglas Baxter to assist him. 'Baxter is the brains and has that class confidence and access Charlie lacks,' says Sam. 'They spend a lot of time being cross with each other, a bit like Laurel and Hardy.'
Boyce's other prime target is the returning west-country gold smelter John Palmer (Tom Cullen) who, in contrast to Miller, works alone and is sitting pretty as the self-styled 'King of Tenerife'.
'Since he successfully defended himself in court [in season one], Palmer has a sense of freedom,' explains Tom.
'He's fitter, happier and wearing nicer suits. He can grow into his wealth now and enjoy it, having been driven all his life to better himself after growing up in immense poverty. Not a nice person, but fascinating to play.'
Palmer's improved physical condition, though, is undermined by a deteriorating psychological one.
'Palmer has this innate confidence,' explains Tom. 'He's always assessing every option, like a chess player. But other factions are moving in on his empire so he's cutting deals and making alliances along with having to juggle his wife, children and mistresses, which comes with its stresses for him.
'I don't know how he had the energy for it all! The gold is infecting him as greed and power become complete obsessions.' More Trending
The problems only mount as Palmer starts to sink into cocaine addiction – an experience, laughs Tom, almost as trying for the actor as it was for the character.
'The fake coke is pure glucose, and it absolutely f**ked me. We did one scene, the last of the day at about 8pm, where I had to snort this humongous line in Palmer's private plane, which is just ridiculous – everything in it is gold. I think I fell asleep about 1am.'
He wags a finger at me – a final warning in a cautionary tale for the ages. 'Don't do glucose, kids!'

'My sister was days away from graduating, then I got a call about an emergency'
For the first time, sister of British nursing student, Tamilore Odunsi is speaking out after the 23 year old was brutally killed in her Houston flat - her younger sister, Georgina shares the heartbreak. Elizabeth Tamilore Odunsi was excitedly counting down the days to graduation day. The 23-year-old was so close to becoming the nurse she dreamed of being, and she had a holiday booked for after the ceremony. But instead it was her sister who walked on to the graduation stage to accept her nursing degree. Because just two weeks earlier, Elizabeth – known as Tamilore – had been murdered, and her flatmate charged with stabbing her to death in their apartment. Georgina says of the graduation day: 'I was collecting this for my sister, but then in the back of my head I'm thinking about the fact that it should have been her. I couldn't even keep a brave face on stage while I was doing that.' To Tamilore, nursing was more than a career – it was a calling. Georgina says: 'From a young age, Tami really liked children. She had such a strong bond with caring for kids, looking after them. She was a very selfless person. She just wanted to care for people that were less abled.' Tamilore, from London, was born in the US and moved back there aged 17 to study. 'She saw an opportunity and she took it immediately,' Georgina says. 'She was a go-getter.' The trainee nurse had built up tens of thousands of TikTok followers by sharing study tips, motivation and nursing advice. In her final TikTok, she beams with pride and excitement as a caption declares: '23 years old. BSN grad in 2 weeks. Vacations booked. Summer is 14 days away. Starting to look human again.' But five days later, on April 26, police called to her apartment in Houston, Texas, to do a welfare check found her body on the kitchen floor. Back in London, Georgina was out with a friend when her older brother rang to tell her to come home because of a family emergency. It took six hours before the family were finally told Tamilore had died. Georgina recalls: 'It was like a dream state for me.' Tamilore's flatmate, fellow student Chester Lamar Grant, 40, was charged with her murder. A judge in a US probable cause court said the two were in a fight over Grant's cat. According to US reports, it came out in court that Grant had been arrested and convicted several times in Washington state for domestic violence, and for violating a protective order in 2023. Tamilore's accommodation provider told US media it carried out checks before Grant moved in, adding: 'We are deeply saddened and disturbed... It seems like senseless violence took the life of a young woman.' Georgina is speaking out in the hope that her sister's death will spark conversations around the safety of women, especially Black women, and the lack of visibility stories like Tamilore's receive. She says: 'I want there to be more protection for us, more safeguarding for us, because I feel like that's the burden. I feel like, as a community, especially the Black community, we need to protect our women and girls much more. I feel like not enough is being done.' Her aim now is to keep Tamilore's memory and legacy alive by continuing to to help people, as Tamilore did, through TikTok. She says: 'Now that we've put my sister to rest, I don't want her name to pass. I might not execute it the same way, but I want her name to continue helping people.' Meanwhile, prayer is keeping the Odunsi family together. Georgina says: 'We're not happy about what's happened but you can't question God. She's with him now – and one day we'll go and meet her too.'

However it appears after time in the Marvel universe he was yearning for something more down to earth - as he headed back to EastEnders for a brief stint in 2019, and then made two more appearances in 2021 and 2022 Nikki Sanderson, Coronation Street As mouthy hairdresser Candice, she was a favourite on the ITV soap from 1995 to 2005. She tried her hand across the pond, with mixed results. Nikki, 41, did land a role in 2008 horror film Boogeyman 3, PRAISE but it went straight to DVD. Fast forward to 2012 and she joined the cast of Hollyoaks as Maxine Minniver, to great success. She was praised for playing a domestic violence victim in one of the Channel 4 soap's most harrowing storylines. Nikki won the Inside Soap Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2023, before quitting the soap this year. Rachel Shenton, Hollyoaks She starred as Mitzeee Minniver for three years before leaving in 2013. She went on to appear in US series Switched at Birth from 2014 to 2017. The following year she won an Oscar for her short film The Silent Child, based on her own experiences as the child of a parent who became deaf. Rachel, 37, now stars in the family friendly drama All Creatures Great and Small on 5, as James Herriot's love interest. Adele Silva, Emmerdale Aside from a five-year break from 2000, the actress was part of the furniture at the ITV soap - first appearing as Kelly Windsor in 1993 aged 13. She tried to leave Kelly behind in 2007 and moved to the US, but struggled to find acting jobs, and in 2010 she was pictured working in a Ted Baker store in LA. Adele came back to Emmerdale briefly before starring in 2012 comedy horror film Strippers vs Werewolves with Freddy Kruger actor Robert Englund. Bagging more UK acting jobs rather than LA ones, Adele, 44, then headed to Hollyoaks for seven episodes in 2015, playing Leela Lomax's cousin, Angela Brown Joshua Richards, Emmerdale Joshua's career path is pretty unique as, unlike others soap rebounders, he was a Hollywood heavyweight who turned his back on Tinseltown to appear in soapland. More than two decades ago, Josh was starring with Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Peter O'Toole in 2004 blockbuster Troy. Josh, 65, also starred in 2017 film King Arthur: Excalibur Rising, before landing the role of Bear Wolf on Emmerdale. On the big screen, he has been in American Gangster (2007), Prometheus (2012) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Himesh Patel, EastEnders Himesh is one of biggest soap exports, and is now successful film actor since leaving his role as Tamwar Masood in EastEnders from 2007 to 2016.
