Acharya Prashant honoured with 'Most Impactful Environmentalist' award on World Environment Day, calls for inner revolution to tackle climate collapse

India Gazette05-06-2025

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 5 (ANI): On World Environment Day, June 5, the Green Society of India honoured world-renowned philosopher and author Acharya Prashant with the prestigious 'Most Impactful Environmentalist ' award. Acharya Prashant has been leading a nationwide movement instrumental in integrating spiritual clarity with environmental awareness. The society bestowed him with an award for guiding millions of individuals towards sustainable living.
Accepting the honour, Acharya Prashant delivered a powerful address, 'The climate crisis is not just outside, it's inside. The glaciers are melting because our minds are burning with greed. Oceans are rising because our desires know no bounds. Before we can act responsibly, we must first think clearly. And that is where true environmentalism begins, not in policy, but in consciousness.'
'When we talk about the environment, we usually refer to forests, rivers, air, and wildlife. But do we ever ask what kind of people we are that we end up polluting rivers or depleting forests?' he questioned. 'Until we address the pollution within the inner chaos, violence, and apathy, how can any external action truly succeed?'
Highlighting the anthropogenic roots of the climate crisis, Acharya Prashant critiqued the tendency to treat environmental issues as isolated, data-driven challenges. 'We talk about the Air Quality Index but never the 'Human Quality.' As if the fault lies in the air and not in us,' he remarked.
He further underscored that much of the environmental concern expressed today stems from self-interest rather than genuine reverence for nature. 'If we were handed a new planet after destroying this one, most of us would forget about the environment instantly,' he said, drawing attention to the utilitarian mindset that dominates environmental action.
In response to the growing climate emergency, Acharya Prashant has launched 'Operation 2030', a nationwide initiative to awaken and educate India's youth. The initiative is aligned with the IPCC-supported UN climate target of keeping the temperature rise to 1.5C over pre-industrial levels by 2030. It aims to create a new type of leader based on ecological awareness, inner courage, and a profound sense of collective responsibility.
Acharya Prashant shines because he can bridge the timeless Vedantic message to the most pressing ecological crisis of our times. Central to his ecological outreach is his Bhagavad Gita Teaching Program, which has now engaged over 100,000 participants and recently conducted what is regarded as the world's largest online Gita-based spiritual examination.
Acharya Prashant's teachings integrate orthodox Vedantic traditions with Buddhism, existentialism, and Western philosophical thought, influencing thinkers and students at top global institutions such as UC Berkeley, Bard College, IITs, IIMs, IISc, and AIIMS.
Concluding his address, Acharya Prashant offered a stern but inspiring call: 'We are not running out of time, we've already run out. 2030 is no longer a policy target; it is a planetary lifeline. To win this race against time, we need a million mutinies in favour of the planet, mutinies in how we think, consume, and live. In homes, classrooms, offices, and within ourselves, change must erupt. The only hope now is an inner revolution led by aware, courageous individuals who refuse to be part of the problem. Nobody is going to come to save the planet. It starts with you.'
As the world celebrates another Environment Day, Acharya Prashant's voice cuts through the rhetoric, reminding us that the path to ecological healing begins with inner awakening, and the time to walk it is now. (ANI)

HC: Husband's consent not needed for passport

A woman does not need her husband's consent and signature to apply for a passport and insisting on the same is an instance of 'male supremacism', the Madras high court has said disposing of a petition filed by a woman who sought directions to authorities to issue her a fresh passport. Chennai, Dec 25 (ANI): A view of Madras High Court, in Chennai on Friday. (ANI Photo) (ANI) Saying that the insistence by the Regional Passport Office (RPO) that the woman get her estranged husband's permission for issuance of a passport was 'shocking', the bench of justice N Anand Venkatesh said it shows the 'mindset of the society in treating woman who are married as if they are chattel belonging to the husband'. The woman, Revathy, moved the court saying that she applied for a passport in April, but her application was not processed and the petitioner was informed that she must obtain the signature of her husband in Form-J and only thereafter, the application will be processed by the Chennai RPO. The petitioner got married in 2023 and there was a matrimonial dispute between the parties which resulted in her husband filing a petition before a local court, seeking for the dissolution of the marriage. This petition was pending. The RPO also took the pending dispute into consideration, following which she filed the present petition. In his order, the judge said that in the considered view of this court, the application submitted by the petitioner seeking a passport has to be processed independently. 'It is not necessary for a wife to get the permission of her husband and take his signature before applying for a passport before the authority,' the judge said in the June 18 order. 'This insistence made by the 2nd respondent (the RPO) shows the mindset of the society in treating woman who are married as if they are chattel belonging to the husband. It is quite shocking that the passport office is insisting for the permission of the husband and his signature in a particular form in order to process the application submitted by the petitioner for passport,' the court said. The judge said the petitioner after marriage does not lose her individuality and a wife can always apply for a passport without the permission or signature of the husband in any form. 'It is quite shocking that the passport office is insisting for the permission of the husband and his signature in a particular form in order to process the application submitted by the petitioner for passport,' the court said. It noted that it was not possible for the petitioner woman to obtain her husband's signature on the application in view of the strained relationship between them, the judge said, the RPO was insisting the woman 'fulfill an impossibility'. 'The practice of insisting for permission from the husband to apply for passport, does not augur well for a society which is moving towards emancipation. This practice is nothing short of male supremacism,' the court said. The judge directed the RPO to process the application submitted by the petitioner and issue a passport in her name on her satisfying the other requirements. This process shall be completed within four weeks, the judge added.

According to Richard Stunning, official adjudicator at Guinness World Records, a record with a title for the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga began on Saturday. The minimum number of participants for the record was 250; they had to hold the Yoga Cobra pose for at least a minute. A total of 2,184 participants breached the one-minute timeline; they ended up holding the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds. The Guinness World Records discounted 64 participants, after which 2,121 participants held the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds to clinch the Guinness World Record. 'The Guinness World Records title that starts today is the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga, simultaneously. We set a guideline that everyone had to do it for at least a minute each, and we set a minimum target of 250 participants. Today, they did it for more than a minute, they did it for two minutes and nine seconds, and the total was 2185. We had to discount 64 participants. So the confirmed title is 2,121 participants. Given we set a minimum of 250, this is smashing the Guinness World Record. Congratulations to everyone involved, and it's a fantastic achievement,' Richard Stunning told ANI. (ANI)

'This ain't aid, it's death': Gaza food distribution plagued by violence and shortage; UN calls situation 'already apocalyptic'

A Palestinian carries a bag of food he collected at a distribution centre run by private contractor the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the southern Gaza Strip, as he arrives at his tent in Khan Younis (Image credit: AP) Palestinians in Gaza are risking their lives daily to get food as aid remains scarce and violence surges. Israeli troops have opened fire near aid routes and looters wait outside distribution points to rob those carrying supplies, residents say. 'I don't see how it can get any worse, because it is already apocalyptic. But somehow it does get worse,' said Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the UN humanitarian affairs office. Most food aid is distributed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which operates inside Israeli military zones. The UN says the aid is not enough to prevent starvation. Palestinians describe scenes of chaos, with crowds crawling under gunfire and people being shot or struggling for basic items like lentils and flour. 'I have nothing to feed my children,' said Jamil Atili, who returned empty-handed and injured from a food centre after he was unable to get anything for his children. 'This isn't aid. It's humiliation. It's death", he added. Israel began allowing food into Gaza this month after cutting it off completely for 10 weeks. United Nations officials noted that it is not enough to prevent starvation. Hundreds have been killed or wounded while trying to reach aid in recent weeks, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. On Tuesday alone, more than 50 people were reportedly killed. Witnesses say Israeli tanks, snipers and drones open fire to prevent crowds from moving past a certain point before the centres open. Palestinian witnesses described that food boxes were stacked on the ground inside aid centres, secured by fences. Thousands rush inside to grab what they can, as reported by the Associated Press. When supplies run out, desperate looters often target those leaving with food. Describing the chaos, Mohammed Saqer said stampede-like situations frequently occur as people scramble for aid. This leaves many injured with no one to help as everyone is focused on getting food. Many return with little or nothing. Omar al-Hobi said he returned empty-handed twice, managed to grab a pack of lentils once and on the fourth day, was determined to get flour for his three children and pregnant wife. 'No one will show you mercy these days. Everybody fends for themselves,' he said.
