Town to increase electricity supply after £8.4m substation upgrade
Homes and businesses in East Ayrshire and surrounding areas will have an improved power supply after an £8.4m substation upgrade.
SP Energy Networks confirmed it has successfully completed the multi-million-pound upgrade of the Kilmarnock town substation, which is set to boost capacity and resilience in the region.
Work on the substation started two years ago and focused on replacing two aging transformers and upgrading other substation equipment, including switching gear and circuit breakers.
The East Ayrshire substation can now increase capacity to meet future energy demands and allows more communities to benefit from secure and reliable supplies.
The investment is part of wider work to boost the transmission network across the UK, with electricity demand set to 'double by 2050'.
Jason Mcinally, project manager at SP Energy Networks said: 'With the completion of our Kilmarnock Town substation upgrade project, we're improving the reliability of the power supply for homes and businesses in Kilmarnock and surrounding areas.
'Kilmarnock is now better equipped than ever to meet the demands of a low-carbon future. For decades to come the region will play a key role in renewable energy generation, helping more people across the UK to access clean, green, secure energy.
'I'd like to thank our hard-working team and contractors who helped make this transformation happen and all with minimal disruption to the local community throughout.'

Football manager takes job at Airport while on gardening leave after sacking
Swansea City axed Luke Williams back in February and the former manager has decided not to rest on his laurels and has got himself a job working at Bristol airport Former Swansea boss Luke Williams is now working at Bristol airport after a picture of him in a high vis jacket went viral. The 44-year-old was place on gardening leave in February this year and has now found himself work in a very different environment. Williams has worked at Swindon and Notts County in the past and it was his work with the latter that caught the attention of those in Wales. He led Notts County to promotion from the National League via the play-offs and established them in League Two. His brand of football earned particular plaudits and when he left Meadow Lane his side were the highest scorers in the Football League. However his stint at Swansea would last just over a year before he was shown the door. Seven defeats in the space of nine games eventually saw the Swansea hierarchy opt for a change earlier this year and Williams was given the boot. Despite receiving a likely pay-off from the Championship outfit the 44-year-old has been keen to remain busy. As a result he's take a job helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers around the Bristol Airport terminal. He started the gig two weeks ago. A photo of the ex-Swansea boss has done the rounds with Williams wearing his yellow vest uniform and a lanyard as he comes out of the lift in Bristol, which is the eighth busiest airport in the UK. The former Notts County boss has never been scared of hard work and has revealed that, in order to fund his early coaching career, he loaded lorries for BHS and drove minibuses to and from nightclubs and airports. He previously told the Guardian when discussing his work ethic: "Sometimes I would work 20 hours off the bat, get three or four hours' kip, back to work. In my opinion motivation in life is everything. 'The realisation in my late-teens that life is going to be a monumental struggle for me, that life was about to become very tough and the world would become very hostile for somebody with no qualifications, no contacts, working class … that desire to feed myself and look after myself kicked in. "I realised that I was capable of tolerating almost anything, providing that I would be able to have a roof over my head and something to eat. That is how the motivation began. I don't think I've really moved away from that. I still feel as insecure in that way as I ever did.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Jurgen Klopp's three-word response to huge Florian Wirtz transfer speaks volumes
Liverpool confirmed the signing of top transfer target Florian Wirtz on Friday, having agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign him for a British-record £116million fee Jurgen Klopp has offered his seal of approval to Liverpool's new £116million signing, Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker, 22, has joined the Reds on a five-year contract after completing a British-record move from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz was Liverpool's top target going into the summer transfer window and they've managed to beat Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to his signature. The deal is comprised of £100m paid to Leverkusen upfront with a further £16m in potential add-ons. It's by far the biggest signing made since Klopp departed Anfield, with his successor, Arne Slot, having led the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season. Slot's reward is to work with a top talent like Wirtz and Klopp has no doubts that he'll be 'really, really great' on Merseyside. During an interview with to German broadcaster RTL, the former Liverpool boss was asked to give his verdict of the transfer. "It will be really, really great," Klopp replied. "I'm sure of it." The legendary manager went on to say: "It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." Wirtz had the pick of some of Europe's best clubs but he and his family felt that Liverpool was the perfect next step. "I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world, and in my opinion Liverpool was one of them," the 31-time Germany international explained. "Yeah, I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything what the club offers me was really good. And in the end [it was] also easy to be excited for me to come to Liverpool. Will Florian Wirtz live up to his £116m price tag at Liverpool? Give us your prediction in the comments section. "It was not that easy for me, for sure, because I am a German player, I play for the Germany national team. So, it was not easy for me to decide but I think the talks with the coach and Richard [Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director] and everybody were, from the start or from the very first time, so good and it just kept going like this. "Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club I felt like, 'this is the place I want to be' and so in the end I was really 100 percent convinced I want to join Liverpool and it was the best choice." Jobs may be lost at private school after fee VAT decision
Jobs at a prestigious Edinburgh private school may be lost as it looks to cut costs. Fettes College said the introduction of VAT on school fees was one of the reasons it took the 'difficult' decision to 'right size our staffing model'. The Scotsman reported that the school – which counts former prime minister Tony Blair among its alumni – has opened a consultation process for both teaching and operational staff in order to reduce headcount. The most recent accounts show 751 students in August 2024, down from 780 the previous year. Fees for boarders at Fettes College can cost up to £18,000 for the current academic year, inclusive of VAT. The Labour government imposed VAT on private school education and boarding fees, effective from January 1. Ministers argue that removing the VAT exemption will benefit the wider education sector, including the 94% of pupils who attend state schools. A spokesman for Fettes College said the sector is facing a 'tough time' and appealed for privacy for the staff involved. The spokesman said: 'Various factors have conspired to increase costs on all organisations and schools are not immune, particularly with the recent imposition of VAT on school fees and rise in national insurance contributions. 'Despite being financially very well managed with a strong student roll, these factors are having an impact on our costs and numbers, and we are obliged to run our operations as efficiently as possible. 'These headwinds obviously affect our families too and our parents need to be certain that we are taking the necessary decisions to run the school efficiently and to use their money effectively. 'A consultation process began in May to right size our staffing model. This difficult decision may result in some redundancies. 'We will continue to provide the highest standard of educational experience, delivering our innovative vision for the school and maintaining our position as a leader in the sector.'
