Scots boy, 7, runs 100 miles to raise money for brother's first wheelchair
A Scottish boy took on the challenge of running 100 miles to help raise money for his sibling's first wheelchair. Theo Hardie's little brother Jude was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and has undergone a series of operations. Although healthy, Jude has limited use of his legs. STV News Theo Hardie cycled 100 miles to raise money for charity. When he was five, Theo challenged himself to cycle 100 miles to and from nursery to raise money for the Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus charity. He set out to raise £1,000 for the charity but quickly smashed that target, raising a total of £2,043. After his success, Theo told his mum he wanted to raise funds to buy Jude a wheelchair by challenging himself to run 100 miles. 'I felt bad because he didn't get to join in on as much stuff, so I thought, I'll go for that wheelchair to have fun,' Theo told STV News. STV News Jude with parents Taylor and Craig. Theo and Jude's mum, Taylor Hardie, said the wheelchair has had a 'massive impact' on Jude. 'It's great just seeing him in the garden playing, and he's able to have so much independence,' she said. Theo says that Jude having a wheelchair means they can always be together. 'It will mean that I can just have him next to me at all times. I cannot be afraid and I can always just be with Jude and not be alone,' he added. STV News Theo and Jude. Dad Craig said: 'Theo's always been really supportive of Jude, but when he said he wanted to do more it was amazing to see'. The seven-year-old is now back on his bike, raising money to buy Jude a trike so they can go out together. Theo is also being honoured at the Pride of Scotland awards this year, something his parents say is well deserved. 'At such a young age, we're so delighted and proud,' said Taylor. 'I'm looking forward to seeing him get that achievement because I think he really deserves it, he's been such a good big brother and gone that extra mile,' Craig added. Biker airlifted to hospital after crash with campervan
A biker has been airlifted to hospital after a crash with a campervan on the A82 in the Highlands. The incident, involving a Peugeot Carado campervan and a BMW R1300 motorbike, happened near Lochend at around 4.30pm on Thursday. The 57-year-old male rider of the motorbike was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he remains in a serious condition. The occupants of the Peugeot Carado were not injured. The 46-year-old male campervan driver was arrested in connection with the incident and released pending further enquiries. Following crash investigations, the road reopened around 11.30pm. Sergeant Kate Finlayson said: 'I'm appealing to anyone who was travelling on the A82 around 4.30pm yesterday and saw what happened to contact us. 'Likewise, if you saw either vehicle prior to the collision and have information which may assist our investigation, please get in touch. 'I'd also ask drivers with dash-cam footage to review this and bring anything of significance to our attention.' Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 2403 of June 19. Ewing's solo bid threatens to turn SNP stronghold into political battleground
Fergus Ewing's decision to stand as an independent in the Holyrood election next year doesn't come as a huge surprise. He has been hinting at this ever since he announced he wouldn't be standing for the SNP. Ewing has frequently been described as a thorn in the party's side in recent years. In fact, he has been a full bed of roses given the number of issues he has disagreed with them on – the deposit return scheme, gender reform, marine protected areas, the dualling of the A9 and A96. The Ewing name is of course steeped in SNP history. Fergus Ewing has been an MSP since 1999. He served as a government minister for 14 years. But now he is no longer a member of the party – he will sit as an independent backbencher at Holyrood for the rest of this parliamentary term. Then next year he will be taking on the SNP party machine in the election. That runs the risk for the SNP of splitting their vote, and allowing a challenger to squeeze through the middle and take what has been a safe seat. So the Fergus Ewing headache looks set to continue for some time yet for the SNP. Woman, 21, charged in connection with crash that killed three men
A woman has been charged nearly a year after three men in their 20s died in a crash near Falkirk. Reece Williams, 23, Lewis Soden, 24, and Connor Page, 21, were pronounced dead at the scene of a crash involving a Ford Focus on Moss Road, near Dunmore, on Friday, July 26, 2024. The 21-year-old female driver of the Focus has now been arrested and charged in connection with a road traffic offence. She is due to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court at a later date. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Jacob Fearnley knocked out of Queen's quarter-finals by Jiri Lehecka
Jacob Fearnley's Queen's Club run was halted in the quarter-finals in straight sets by Jiri Lehecka. The British number two looked heavy-legged in an error-strewn 7-5 6-2 defeat to the Czech world number 30. Fearnley was scheduled to play the opening match on the Andy Murray Arena despite a gruelling three-setter against Corentin Moutet the day before, followed by a win in the doubles – alongside Cameron Norrie – against Lehecka and Taylor Fritz. Lehecka got revenge for that defeat by preventing Fearnley from becoming the first British man to reach the semi-finals on his Queen's Club debut in 48 years. Fearnley coughed up eight double faults in the first set, including three in both the games in which Lehecka broke his serve. Lehecka struck again for 3-2 in the second after a Fearnley forehand landed a millimetre out and then ran away with the match, wrapping up victory in an hour and 17 minutes.
