Apple launches accessibility features for people with sight and hearing impairment

Apple has unveiled a suite of new accessibility features include live captions, upgraded braille support, personal voice replication, and new screen magnifier options designed for people with vision or hearing impairments on Wednesday, before Global Accessibility Awareness Day.
In a significant shift, developers will now be required to include "nutrition labels" for accessibility in their app listings, showing support for features like voiceover, large text or voice control.
Apple's senior director of global accessibility policy, Sarah Herrlinger, said the labelling initiative would help developers better understand how to build inclusive tools.
'It gives them a real opportunity to understand what it means to be accessible,' Herrlinger said.
A highlight of the update is the new personal voice feature, which allows users to replicate their own voice using just 10 recorded phrases.
The data remains on-device and encrypted unless backed up to iCloud.
The screen magnifier, now available on Macs and iPhones, lets users zoom in on presentations or whiteboards, with adjustable settings for contrast, colour and brightness.
The braille features include note-taking, mathematical input using Nemeth braille, and improved compatibility with devices.
Apple also introduced 'Live Listen,' which allows AirPods to enhance audio in lecture halls or public settings.
The update complements a previously released feature that turns AirPods into hearing aids.
Herrlinger rejected the suggestion that Apple's accessibility tools come at a cost, despite the brand's premium pricing.
'All of this is available to you right out of the box at no additional charge,' she said.
She added that users found it more economical to have multiple accessibility tools built into a single device rather than purchasing separate aids.
Vision Australia's head of corporate affairs, Chris Edwards, who is blind and has a seeing eye dog, appreciate companies for ensuring the accessibility features were inbuilt into products and operating systems.
'I would imagine the interpretation of images through the new features will make these more accessible for everyone. Being able to interpret images live is a key next step to change people's lives,' he said.
'The new accessibility features looks particularly good for students in classrooms. I think it also highlights that braille is still a very important format.'
The announcement comes just as Apple's main rival, Google, rolls out similar AI-powered accessibility tools on Android.
Apple's updates will be released later this year.

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Saturday informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance that Pakistanis spent over Rs 317 billion on various online apps from tech giants including Meta, Apple, Netflix, etc, during 2024-25. According to a presentation ('Digital Presence' Proceeds Levy Act, 2025) given by FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood to the committee on Saturday, the value of such transactions stood at above Rs 317 billion in 2024-25. Total number of transactions stood at 42,684,264 during this period. The federal government has introduced the 'Digital Presence' Proceeds Levy Act, 2025, which imposes a new tax on foreign vendors supplying digitally ordered goods and services to consumers in Pakistan. The tax rate has been proposed at 5 percent of the total amount paid. Mobile apps: SBP issues new guidelines for transaction security 'Foreign vendors providing e-commerce goods of services will be taxed for income tax at 5 percent under the said Act,' the bFBR Chairman said. The payment intermediaries including banks and financial institutions will collect tax on digital payments made to foreign vendors supplying goods or services into Pakistan. The committee considered the proposed amendments to The Digital Presence Proceeds Tax Act, 2025. After detailed deliberations, the committee recommended that the Bill may be passed with minor amendments by the National Assembly. The FBR Chairman informed that the FBR data revealed the spending spree covering a wide array of apps, from social media giants to online shopping websites and streaming services. Leading the charge is Facebook/Meta, with Rs. 12.3 billion in transactions. Data further revealed that Apple/iTunes saw the highest number of transactions (over 5.1 million), totaling nearly Rs 6 billion. The data revealed that the Google followed closely with 2.3 million transactions and a transaction value of Rs 5.94 billion. Subsequently, Ali Express made strong spending of Rs 4.9 billion in over 944,466 transactions. The Temu carried out worth Rs. 1.8 billion transactions whereas number of transactions stood at 376,745 during this period. Netflix witnessed 3.37 million transactions worth Rs. 2.79 billion. 'Other' online platforms had a total combined number of transactions at 28.6 million, totaling a staggering Rs. 281.4 billion. The committee considered the proposed amendments to the Islamabad Capital Territory (Tax on Services) Ordinance, 2001. After detailed deliberations, the Committee recommended that the amendments proposed in the Bill may be passed by the Assembly. After detailed deliberations, the committee approved proposed amendments and suggested additional corrections and revisions to several clauses. Adobe Project Indigo: A free-to-use iPhone app for SLR-style photos
Adobe has launched a new computational photography camera app for iPhones, offering users a powerful tool to capture high-quality, natural-looking photos. The app, named Project Indigo, is free to download and currently available for iPhone 12 Pro models and newer, with Adobe recommending optimal use on an iPhone 15 Pro or later. The app was developed in part by Marc Levoy, a renowned figure in mobile imaging who previously helped transform the Google Pixel camera's capabilities. Now an Adobe Fellow, Levoy worked alongside senior scientist Florian Kainz to build the app under Adobe Labs. The project was announced on Adobe's website through a technical blog. Unlike most Adobe products, Project Indigo does not require users to log into an Adobe account, allowing immediate access to its features. Indigo leverages computational photography to improve image quality by capturing a burst of photos and combining them to produce a final image with enhanced dynamic range and reduced noise.
