Hardik Pandya never gives up, good to see his turnaround in IPL 2025: Ajay Jadeja
Hardik Pandya soaked in the roar of a rapturous Wankhede as he led Mumbai Indians' lap of honour on Wednesday, May 21. The MI captain was all smiles, celebrating a resounding 59-run win over Delhi Capitals that sealed their spot in the IPL 2025 play-offs. It was a moment of redemption and resurgence and Hardik stood proudly at the heart of it.advertisementFollowing a high-profile transfer from Gujarat Titans, Hardik had taken over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma — a fan favourite. When results didn't go MI's way in 2024, it was Hardik who bore the brunt of the backlash as MI finished bottom of the table.IPL 2025: MI vs DC Highlights
But Hardik did not throw in the towel. The pressure mounted once again this season after MI lost four of their first five matches. However, the five-time champions staged a stunning comeback, winning seven of their next eight games to storm into the play-offs in style.Throughout the season, Hardik has remained content to stay in the background, focused on getting the best out of a star-studded squad. On Wednesday, they delivered under pressure, displaying the composure of a team accustomed to big-match scenarios.CAPTAIN COOLadvertisementFormer India batter Ajay Jadeja heaped praise on Hardik's leadership, noting that the all-rounder hasn't altered his captaincy style but has simply managed his team more effectively this time around.Hardik has already proved his credentials, having led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and the final in 2023. Now, he'll be aiming to guide Mumbai Indians to a record sixth championship.'Hardik has been fabulous. He has got the energy. He has got a different style of captaining. Unfortunately, last season wasn't a success. He has kept his cool. He has carried on the way he captains, whether he was at GT, whether it was last year,' Jadeja told JioStar.'He is an excellent motivator. He is one man who has shown he never gives up. Yes, there is an excellent analytical team out there who is helping him out. But the energy that he brings in!'It's lovely to see, for a man who has had such a tough time last year — with the same team, same ground, same fans — he has turned it around. The same fans at this ground were booing him last year; now they are cheering for him. That shows his character. You want to always have a leader like him — not just when you're winning, but when you are losing as well.'BETTER BOWLING GROUP, BETTER RESULTSadvertisementJadeja also pointed out that Hardik has benefitted from a vastly improved bowling line-up in IPL 2025, so much so that the captain himself hasn't needed to bowl in most games. While Jasprit Bumrah carried much of the bowling burden last season with 20 wickets in 13 matches, this year he has found ample support from Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar. The trio have collectively picked up 37 wickets, while Hardik himself has chipped in with 13.'The results have come his way this year. I think he has got a better bowling attack this year. So that makes a big difference.'A man who bowls for India and plays as a pure bowler is not even required. That's the kind of arsenal that has been put around him. A captain is always as good as his team.'Mumbai Indians will now look to finish in the top two and earn themselves an extra shot at reaching the final. Their final league fixture will be against Punjab Kings on Monday in Jaipur.advertisementWith MI, PBKS, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans completing the line-up, the play-offs race for IPL 2025 is officially over — and the business end beckons.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Zeeshan eyeing another dominant season
Lucknow: After the mini-auction, players are gearing up for the third edition of the UPT20 League 2025, which is likely to begin in August. Zeeshan Ansari , the highest wicket-taker of the previous edition — a performance that opened doors to the Indian Premier League for him — is all set to shine once again. Zeeshan, who was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 40 lakh, took 6 wickets in 10 matches in this year's IPL season. Responding to a question about whether he feels any pressure to perform in this season of the UPT20 League, Zeeshan said, "I don't play under pressure or for records. If I keep doing what I've been doing, I believe things will turn out well. My approach is going to be the same, whether it's the IPL or the UPT20 League." Speaking about the UPT20 League, the Lucknow-based leg-spinner said, "In my opinion, it's a huge platform for every player. If you perform well, you will be noticed. Around 10–12 players from Uttar Pradesh have managed to make it to the IPL." Zeeshan further emphasised the importance of fitness in today's competitive cricket. "The main thing is to stay fit throughout the year. I've worked with IPL trainers and have now hired a personal trainer for myself." When asked to compare the IPL with the UPT20 League, Ansari said, "The difference is mainly about pressure. In the UP T20 League, there's less pressure and a smaller audience. But in the IPL, there's a huge crowd, and people expect you to perform. It's all about how well you handle the pressure." "To be honest, I couldn't play to my full potential because it was my debut season. Initially, I wasn't sure if I'd even make it to the playing XI," he added. On playing domestic cricket, Zeeshan said, "Domestic cricket is crucial. Performing in domestic cricket isn't easy. Even if you do well in the IPL and get noticed, taking wickets in the Ranji Trophy shows your true calibre." When asked about his preparations for this season after being the highest wicket-taker in last year's UPT20 League, he said, "My goal is to bowl well and be at the top again," he signed off.

IPL winner Jitesh set to leave Vidarbha, move base to Baroda
1 2 3 4 Nagpur: After playing a key role in RCB's IPL triumph a month back, Jitesh Sharma is set to leave Vidarbha. Sources said that the big-hitting wicketkeeper-batter, who justified his Rs11 crore price tag with a string of stellar shows, will play for Baroda in the next domestic season. A source informed that Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) on Friday received a request for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Jitesh. A player has to obtain a NOC from his home association for shifting base to a new team. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) officials confirmed that Jitesh will be joining their team in the next season. After making his First Class debut for Vidarbha in October 2015, Jitesh got just 18 matches in the longer format in the last one decade. Many feel he is a much better player than the number of First Class matches he got to play for Vidarbha. "Same was the case with his leadership quality. Vidarbha never fully utilised his captaincy skills. It was only after his exploits in the IPL, first for Kings Punjab and RCB in the last edition, that he has finally managed to command respect — which he always deserved — within the Vidarbha setup," a source said. Punjab Kings were the first to appoint Jitesh as vice captain and then captain in 2024 IPL. Before that Jitesh never got any leadership role in Vidarbha's senior cricket. Post the IPL, Jitesh led Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and took the team to quarterfinal stage. In Vidarbha's next tournament, Vijay Hazare Trophy, he played under Karun Nair. SARWATE TO PLAY FOR CHHATTISGARH Former Vidarbha allrounder Aditya Sarwate, who played for Kerala last season, confirmed that he will move to Chhattisgarh for the upcoming season. The left-arm spinner and solid lower-order batter said that due to family commitments he wanted to move to a team based near Nagpur. "My move to Chhattisgarh has been finalised. I look forward to the new challenge after a fruitful outing with Kerala," Sarawate told TOI. Sarwate's allround performance had propelled Vidarbha to twin Ranji Trophy titles in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Last year, Sarwate was one of the standout performers for Kerala as they made it to their first Ranji Trophy final. The title clash, played at Nagpur, saw Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy on the basis of first innings lead. Sarwate had snapped 40 wickets in his first and only season for Kerala.

Ex-India Stumper Surprised By Kuldeep Yadav's Omission From India's Playing XI
India opted for a pace-heavy attack with four quicks and a sole spinner in veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for the series opener at Headingley in Leeds. 'I would have liked Kuldeep Yadav to be in the playing XI. He is your trump card alongside (Jasprit) Bumrah. I would have picked him," Engineer told PTI on Friday, the first day of the opening Test. 'Since he is a quality bowler, England batters would find it difficult to play him. So, I would play him in all five games," he added. The 87-year-old, who featured in 46 Tests for India between 1961 and 1975, also supported new Test captain Shubman Gill, backing the 25-year-old to succeed despite his modest batting record in SENA countries. 'A few people have written Shubman off, saying he hasn't got runs in England or he can't get runs in England because of his technique, but I beg to disagree. He is a class player." He was particularly impressed with Gill's leadership during the 2025 IPL season, where the opener led Gujarat Titans to the Eliminator. 'Shubman has got this captaincy after the IPL. He captained his team pretty well in the IPL. I thought he showed calmness and made the right decisions—bowling changes and fielding changes. 'So, let's give him a chance and an opportunity because I think he'll do well. I have confidence that he's a level-headed young man and willing to listen to senior players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant the vice-captain, or certainly Jasprit Bumrah. So, I think he'll do well. Let's back him," he said. Engineer also lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a fluent 101 off 159 balls on the opening day, setting the tone for India in the series. 'Credit to Yashasvi Jaiswal for batting patiently despite a painful rib injury from a short ball. He played his shots correctly and batted superbly." Reflecting on England's bowling performance, the former cricketer felt India should exploit the home side's weak spin attack. 'England lack quality spinners. Young Bashir, despite a decent Test record, isn't great and can concede runs. Our batsmen excel against off-spin, so they'll capitalise on him," he said. Engineer added that while the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin has undeniably left a void in the Indian Test setup, it also paves the way for the next generation to step up. 'A player of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin's calibre will undoubtedly be missed, but this creates great opportunities for youngsters like Sai Sudharsan. 'I'm confident we'll see more of Sai in Test cricket, despite his unfortunate dismissal today," added Engineer, referring to the debutant's four-ball duck. Advertisement
