Tigers and NSW teammates rally around Sarah Togatuki after tragic loss of sister ahead of NRLW start
Wests Tigers players and staff rallied around Sarah Togatuki at her sister's funeral on Monday after the beloved NSW Origin forward returned to the care of her NRLW club over the weekend.
The 27-year-old is being heralded for her bravery to play Origin III in Newcastle on Thursday night while dealing with the unspeakable tragedy of suddenly losing her older sister Jean days earlier.
Tigers coach Brett Kimmorley said Togatuki will be given as much time off from club duties as she needs.
'She's loved and supported, what she's had to go through and fronted up last week to play Origin, she's an amazing person,' he said.
'We've got a great wellbeing person at our club, and we're a caring club who care about her. She's brought that respect on herself with her actions and who she is. We'll support and assist her in any way we can.
'Today was option for any of the players to go, and a number of them turned up to show her love and support.'
Togatuki's courage has captured the hearts of the rugby league community, while NSW teammates and close friends have spoken about her inspirational character and the bond they share beyond representative teams heading into the NRLW season, which starts on July 3.
'Grief is a strange thing and they say time heals, but it doesn't. It's always hard to avoid but what Sala has been able to do is rally her community around her and her team around her,' said Canberra captain and close friend Simaima Taufa.
'What we've been able to do is have our arms wide open for her.
'Sala knows that far beyond this game we're bonded, and she can lean on us. She's got a community.
'Moving forward it's just about moving onto our NRLW clubs and making sure we're around her. The great thing about this game is wherever we go, wherever we are, we're all connected.
'That's something that can't be taken away from us. I can't praise Sala enough for her strength. She's the bravest person I know.'
Meanwhile, the Blues celebrated the series win despite losing game three in Newcastle last week, with most players returning to their NRLW clubs to officially begin their pre-season over the weekend.
NRLW trials will kick off over the coming weeks, including the Tigers playing Dragons at Leichhardt Oval on June 22.
'The great thing about NSW is the pathways, the girls are always pushing us for spots, so we have to take what we've learned here and take it back to our NRLW clubs and bring that next person up,' Taufa said.
'This game is far bigger than us.'

‘Prefer the G': Collingwood whinge about home game at Marvel Stadium
Collingwood is taking on St Kilda in Melbourne on Saturday night – and the Pies still found a way to complain about the fixture. The Pies, who have enormous pulling power with their Collingwood Army, are universally acknowledged as having the comfiest draw in the competition. They rarely venture away from the familiar confines of the MCG, playing just six interstate games across this season, which includes Gather Round. Of their 23 matches this season, 14 of them are at the 100,000-seat MCG, with another three games around three kilometres across the city at Marvel Stadium. Two of those Marvel fixtures are home games, including Saturday night against the Saints, and that fact doesn't seem to sit well with the Collingwood cheer squad or many of the club's pampered fans. The Collingwood banner ahead of the match against the Saints read: 'A home game at Marvel, we prefer the 'G, this crowd feels like an intimate dinner party.' Poor things must feel lost having to travel all that way and somehow find a seat in the diminutive 53,000-seat venue. Cam Mooney was fired up as he spoke on Fox Footy as the Pies ran through the banner. 'They've just run out, you can hear the crowd, a huge crowd here tonight at Marvel with Collingwood,' he said. 'I'm looking forward to watching Tim Membrey, playing his first game against the old club. 'It's always a nervous one, 10 years, nearly 180 games, three-time leading goalkicker at St Kilda and then he got the sack at the end of the year. 'What a great pick up from Collingwood.' While former key forward Mooney was excited about Membrey, man of those watching on were poking fun at the venue for the Collingwood side. Sports producer Brad Klibansky noticed the banner and tweeted: 'Cheeky from the Pies.' Max Blake joked: 'Spare a thought for Collingwood players and fans playing a home game on the road at Marvel.' An X account called Broice wrote: 'Important road-trip for the Pies tonight.' Anthony Leach was having fun, tweeting: 'Did Collingwood sell a home game to St Kilda? I guess that's what battler clubs have to do to make a buck.' The official Collingwood account tweeted its Game Day Guide on Friday with the caption: 'Our first home game under the Marvel Stadium roof for 2025!' It's fair to say their huge supporter base was far from pleased, particularly as Marvel happens to be St Kilda's home ground. Renowned race caller Bryan Martin was clearly miffed, replying: 'One too many.' Another fan replied: 'Imagine Arsenal playing a home game at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. That's what's happening here. We should never agree to a home game against a Marvel tenant.' Millane Raymond wrote: 'Home game against a team that is their home ground.' An angry fan stated: 'It's not a home game if it's not at the MCG! I hate when we get a home game that isn't at the G, it makes no sense and especially considering the Saints home is Marvel.' Another fan declared: 'And we are travelling two games in row.' That last fan at least added a cry laughing emoji, owing to the fact the Pies also 'travel' to Marvel to take on West Coast next week. While Collingwood occasionally being 'forced' to play away from the MCG is good fodder for footy fans, some were genuinely surprised by the move. Lachy Mahoney tweeted: 'This game being played at Telstra Dome is absolutely ridiculous. And I'm not a Collingwood supporter by the way.' Another blamed the AFL, writing: 'Why are Collingwood playing at Marvel? Poor from the AFL.' It remains to be seen if the underdog Saints take advantage of the chance to play at their home ground, trailing by just two points midway through the third term.

Australian opener Sam Konstas adamant he's improved since Boxing Day bonanza
Australian opener Sam Konstas feels like his cricket has 'come a long way' since his unforgettable Test debut at the MCG, but the teenager doesn't feel the need to prove his critics wrong in the Caribbean this week. Last summer, the 19-year-old announced himself to the cricket world with a whirlwind half-century against India on Boxing Day, repeatedly ramping speedster Jasprit Bumrah in front of 87,242 fans. However, he was dropped ahead of Australia's Test tour of Sri Lanka in February, also missing selection for the recent World Test Championship final defeat to South Africa at Lord's. On Friday, Cricket Australia confirmed Konstas would be recalled for the series opener against the West Indies in Barbados, with the injured Steve Smith and the underperforming Marnus Labuschagne slipping out of the starting XI. Speaking to reporters in Barbados on Saturday, Konstas confessed he felt 'very grateful' for another opportunity in the national side, adding that he understood why he was omitted for Australia's three previous Tests. 'It's been good training with the whole group and getting to know everyone a lot more,' Konstas said. 'Obviously it's a tough team to crack into as we've got legends of the game. 'For me, hopefully I grab my opportunity because it's such a strong side and I'm very grateful for that. 'It's a dream come true to be honest, 19 years old, playing for your country, travelling the world. 'I'm very lucky to be where I am currently.' Konstas' combative Boxing Day blitz successfully tamed Bumrah, but the right-hander drew criticism for reckless dismissals throughout the remainder of the home summer. Most notably when he was bowled by Victorian seamer Scott Boland in the third over of a Sheffield Shield match after attempting a slog-sweep. Despite lingering concerns on whether he has the temperament required for Test cricket, Konstas is confident he has a better grasp on when to counterpunch with aggressive strokes and when to soak up pressure with a conventional approach. 'The emotions probably got to me with the crowd,' Konstas said of his Boxing Day knock. 'It was good reflecting, having a bit of time off to strengthen my game up. 'I've been trying to focus on a few key areas with my batting coach, and I feel like I've come a long way, so hopefully I can display that in the next few Test matches.' Asked whether he feels the need to prove he's not a one-trick pony, Konstas responded: 'I trust people that I work with, they understand my game. I'm not trying to prove to anyone how I'm going to play. 'I just want to be myself and understand when to take on the game and when to soak up the pressure to win games for Australia.' Konstas got his Test cap number tattooed on his forearm in January, confessing he still occasionally watches clips of his MCG innings. 'To be honest, I've been watching it quite a bit. Some of my mates still send it to me,' he laughed. 'I still can't believe it. I don't know what was going through my mind at that time.' The first Test between the West Indies and Australia gets underway at Bridgetown's Kensington Oval on Thursday at 12am AEST. 'I know quite a few of their players, maybe half of their team,' Konstas said of the West Indies. 'They've got brute pace, they're very skilful. 'Can't wait for the challenge.'

Hearts break for rising NRL star Jack Bostock after suspected ACL rupture in Dolphins' loss to Knights
Newcastle forward Brodie Jones scored in the final minute to sink the injury-hit Dolphins 26-20 in a thriller in Perth and keep the Knights' finals hopes alive. Jones, who came off the bench, chased through a bomb and showed great determination to plant the ball down after Knights captain Kalyn Ponga had set up two tries in a brilliant display. The Dolphins lost winger Jack Bostock to a suspected ACL rupture in the first half at HBF Park. 'He is distraught, it was a non-contact injury,' commentator Warren Smith said. 'It's a sad sight.' Bostock scored four tries in his previous outing and has been touted as a NSW representative of the future. 'I am really disappointed for him,' Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf said. 'He's had a great season and is a terrific young man and I know he has the resilience to get through it.' His loss adds to season-ending injuries already for key forwards Tom Gilbert, Daniel Saifiti and Max Plath, along with the continued absence of prop Thomas Flegler with a shoulder nerve complaint since April last year. Newcastle have struggled in attack in 2025 but had more strike with centre Bradman Best back from a hamstring injury and winger Dominic Young returned to the club after a mid-season transfer from Sydney Roosters. Ponga, backing up from Queensland's win on Wednesday, played a true captain's knock. He got his hands on the ball when the game was on the line and set up two tries for Best with pinpoint grubbers. 'I am very proud of them,' winning Knights coach Adam O'Brien said. 'When the game was there to be taken, they went after it. ''(Jones) actually earned that (winning) try after he'd come up with big plays earlier in the half.' Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was also outstanding with the ball after his Maroons starring role. Knights five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe swooped to score his 11th try of the season after a Jack Cogger bomb was dropped by Tabuai-Fidow. Newcastle's kicking game was on song and they led 16-4 at one stage before the Dolphins hit back. The dynamic Dolphins left edge was dangerous. Five-eighth Kodi Nikorima started and finished a move while new captain Isaiya Katoa put hole running specialist Connelly Lemuelu in with a precision pass. The Knights lost Sharpe to an HIA and then centre Dane Gagai was sin-binned for a professional foul in the second half. Katoa combined with versatile Kurt Donoghoe to put winger Jamayne Isaako over in the corner. The Dolphins turned it on from their own tryline to take the lead with centre Herbie Farnworth igniting a move that was finished by Tabuai-Fidow. Ponga laid on another try for Best with a pinpoint grubber to level it up at 20-all with 16 minutes to go before an enthralling finish that was capped by Jones' heroics. The Dolphins had won their previous three matches and were gallant but the Knights were desperate and moved to 13th position with the win.
