Bristol name ex-Scotland hooker Lawson head coach
Bristol Bears women have appointed Scott Lawson as their new head coach.
The 43-year-old joins the Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) side from the Scottish Rugby Union where he has been a specialist skills coach for their women's squad, men's under-20s team and Glasgow Warriors' academy outfit.

Lawson's 16-year playing career saw him win 47 international caps for Scotland and make 250 appearances for clubs including Glasgow, Sale, Gloucester, London Irish and Newcastle, where he retired in 2018.
The hooker, who has also worked as director of rugby at the University of St Andrews, will make the move to Bristol following the U20 World Championship in Italy, which is being held from 29 June to 19 July.
The Scot comes in following the departure of Dave Ward in April, after four years as head coach.
The Bears finished fourth last season to reach their fourth successive PWR semi-final, but were beaten by Gloucester-Hartpury in what proved to be Ward's final match.

He also took the team to their first final in 2024, where they were also beaten by Gloucester-Hartpury.
Lawson said he planned to work hard and be relentless to aim to bring success to the club.
"From the moment I spoke with Daisie Mayes [general manager] and Pat Lam [director of rugby] it was clear that the vision for the women's programme and the aligned approach across the whole club was something I really wanted to be a part of," Lawson said.
"I've loved my time with Scottish Rugby and will always be grateful for the experiences and relationships I've built there, which I'll continue to value moving forward.

"But this was an exciting opportunity I simply couldn't resist."
The club have not disclosed the length of Lawson's contract.
"His vast coaching and playing experience across a range of different environments and levels, together with his passion for the role, understanding of the club vision and focus on player development and winning impressed us during the interview process," Lam said.

Gloucester sign All Blacks prop Laulala
Gloucester have signed New Zealand prop Nepo Laulala for the 2025-26 Premiership season. The 33-year-old has been rehabilitating from a ruptured Achilles tendon at Kingsholm after being released by French side Toulouse last season. "We moved quickly to get him here in the building and start his rehab, which gave us a jump on the other sides and most importantly, Nepo has been really grateful for how we've supported him with his injury. "He's looking really good, he's coming through all the tests that we've been putting him through, and we're confident he can have a big impact for us this season." Following the 2023 World Cup, he moved to Toulouse, but his time in the Top 14 was cut short due to his injury. He has spent the last three months at Gloucester regaining fitness. "I'm really grateful to George and everybody at Gloucester for welcoming me to Kingsholm after going through a pretty rough time in France," Laulala said. "It was a scary time not knowing where my future lay, but I'm looking forward to repaying everybody here for the faith they've put in me. Sand dunes and sumo - Wales' brutal pre-season
From sand dunes to shark bait sumo, Wales head coach Sean Lynn is delivering on his promise of a brutal pre-season. After a disappointing first campaign in the 2025 Women's Six Nations the former Gloucester-Hartpury boss made no secret of the fact he thought Wales lacked the fitness to play the brand of rugby that won him three successive league titles. Advertisement And with a two-Test tour of Australia and the Rugby World Cup in England fast approaching, Lynn is intent on pushing players to their limits. His extended training squad reported for testing at the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) National Centre of Excellence at the start of June, the first task being the dreaded bronco runs. True grit For those fortunate enough never to have partaken, it is a fitness test that involves timed shuttle runs over increasing distances. "We came in on day one looking at the bronco testing, it's what our lead S&C [strength and conditioning coach] wanted to measure us on," said Lynn. Advertisement "It's really exciting because one of our young pathway players absolutely smashed it, and came top of the forwards league table which is really pleasing to see." Testing has not just been confined to sweltering indoor training barns - the squad headed to Merthyr Mawr on Friday where they endured the energy-zapping 'big dipper' - the largest sand dune in Wales. "When you're in these tough situations, it's about making sure that we're all in it together," said Lynn. "It's a combination of making sure that we are digging in deep and working hard for each other. Advertisement "We want to be a hard team to beat." As well as welcoming back prop powerhouse Sisilia Tuipulotu, Lynn has stayed true to his word by including a handful of pathway players in his 45-player squad. And they are not just there to make up the numbers with Lynn saying they are "very much in the mix" for selection this summer. "It's lovely to see the PDCs [player development centres] at the moment and you can see their fruition. "We're seeing a real big emphasis on these girls. They are not drowning, they are swimming very nicely in these waters." Back-row Chiara Pearce and scrum-half Seren Lockwood have both come from Wales Under-18s. Advertisement "It's been challenging physically and mentally, but it's a great feeling training with all the big guns, because you see them on telly," Pearce said. "I feel confident in everything I'm doing, just because he [Lynn] is on my back saying 'you can do it, just believe in yourself, we're all here together and we're all helping you'." Lockwood added: "We are here for a reason, so it's up to us to prove ourselves now. "It's crazy to think about it, I'm 18 years-old, it [selection] would be a dream, but it is in reach, I've just got to fight for it now and see what happens." Advertisement It is also a first camp for loose-head prop Katherine Baverstock who said it is certainly a "step-up" from under-20s, but they "want to train well and put our names out there". Baby sharks While impressing the coaches, Pearce, Lockwood and Baverstock admit to being daunted by some of the senior players, especially when they do the 'shark bait' contact drill. "Basically we fight each other, it's like sumo wrestling and you've got to get each other out of the circle. It gets pretty intense," explained Baverstock. "I had Abbie Fleming, I got in the ring and I was shaking, I was like 'oh no'," said Pearce. Advertisement But at the same time the young trio are more than ready to fight for shirts. "I'll have no problem putting myself in the mix and fighting for that position because I know how bad I want it," said Pearce. "They've already represented and I haven't yet." That is just the sort of healthy competition Lynn wants before he whittles the squad down to 30 players before heading down under to take on the Wallaroos in Brisbane on 26 July and then in Sydney on 1 August. Wales beat Australia for the first time in their history at Rodney Parade in a warm-up last September before succumbing to a heavy defeat at WXV2 a week later. Advertisement On their return to the UK, Wales will have just over three weeks to shake-off the jet lag and get ready for what promises to be the biggest ever Women's Rugby World Cup, with the 10th edition being held across eight different venues in England. Wrigley Field security upgrades advance — and an MLB All-Star Game in Chicago could follow
Wider sidewalks and new security bollards could soon come to Wrigley Field after aldermen advanced a ballpark security plan Monday. But the new $32.1 million package set to face a final City Council vote Wednesday could bring far more than added safety to the Friendly Confines. Wrigleyville Ald. Bennett Lawson, 44th, hopes the security upgrades funded by a mix of team, city and state money will also help the Cubs land a Major League Baseball All-Star Game. MLB has long requested the improvements in All-Star game discussions, Lawson said. 'The city saw the need to do our part, and the state of course, to facilitate that,' Lawson said late last month. 'I'll let MLB and the Cubs share more details on that news when it happens.' In addition to security bollard installation, the plan that advanced unanimously in the City Council's Zoning Committee Monday would widen sidewalks on Addison Street by four feet and settle a land dispute between the team and the city over a Waveland Avenue parking lot by moving fencing to widen a narrow alleyway. And to pay for the deal, the state plans to pay $12 million, the city will chip in up to $10 million and the team will cover an $8 million chunk, plus any cost overruns and long-term maintenance work. Chicago Cubs deny report that All-Star Game is headed to Wrigley Field in 2027: 'No decision has been made'Lawson called the plan the 'final piece' of Wrigley Field's gradual redevelopment. The wider sidewalks and bollards will provide 'a little bit of breathing room' for fans walking around the ballpark and loading onto buses, he said. 'Day-to-day operations, this helps improve the security in the area,' Lawson said. 'And my understanding is it does factor in when MLB is considering the All-Star game.' Lawson said he has heard 'nothing official' about the game coming to Chicago, but added that he thinks investments by the team's owners, the Ricketts family, should put the team in line for the baseball festivities. Ricketts family spokesperson Dennis Culloton said that even though the likely-to-come security upgrades might help check off a final box to land an all-star game, the plan is 'about one thing and one thing only,' public safety. 'Making the community safer is important to the entire city,' he said. 'It's beneficial for more than just a baseball game.' Cubs spokesperson Jennifer Martinez-Roth said the plan 'would mean enhanced safety around the ballpark, which is important to us, our fans and visitors alike.' Asked about the potential of an all-star game, she said, 'While we are hopeful, MLB has not made a decision.' League officials typically announce where future all-star games will be played in July, around the same time as the all-star weekend unfolds each year. The team has long sought to bring the game to Chicago, and their push has played out everywhere from radio reports to the mayor's phone in the last year. In February 2024, Mayor Brandon Johnson got a text from his business community liaison Charles Smith letting the mayor know Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts wanted a meeting, according to records obtained by the Tribune via the Freedom of Information Act. 'Also about all star game – I think it's pretty much a done deal,' Smith, vice chair of World Business Chicago, texted Johnson, a lifelong fan of the North Siders. Last month, it seemed the stars had finally aligned for the team and city when WSCR-AM 670 reported the MLB awarded the 2027 All-Star Game to the Cubs. But the team quickly denied the report from their flagship radio station, telling the Tribune 'no decision has been made.'
