COAS promoted to rank of field marshal

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Tuesday promoted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal, recognising his bravery and leadership during a historic military victory over arch-rival India.
The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the elevation of Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir in recognition of his leadership during the high-stakes Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the fierce military showdown known as Marka-e-Haq.
A statement from the Prime Minister's Office praised Gen Munir's exemplary courage and determination, crediting him with orchestrating a unified strategy across the armed forces that led to a historic victory for the country.

'The Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Gen Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of field marshal for ensuring the security of the country and defeating the enemy with high strategy and courageous leadership.'
COAS Munir now becomes only the second person in the country's history to wear the ceremonial five-star insignia – the last being Field Marshal Ayub Khan in 1965. The title, modelled after the British military tradition, symbolises extraordinary wartime command.
The cabinet's decision comes shortly after the culmination of a high-intensity conflict with India, the most serious since the 1999 Kargil war.
The federal hailed the outcome of 'Marka-e-Haq' as a defining moment for Pakistan's military strategy and national defence.
Gen Munir, who took command of the Pakistan Army in November 2022, accepted the honour with a note of humility and gratitude.
In a statement released by the military's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Munir said the title was a tribute not to him individually but to the entire nation and the armed forces. 'I dedicate this honour to the people of Pakistan, our brave armed forces, and especially to our civil and military martyrs and veterans.'
'This is the trust of the nation, for which millions of Asims have sacrificed. This is not an individual honour but a recognition of collective courage.'
The statement from the Prime Minister's Office also confirmed that Prime Minister Sharif had consulted President Asif Ali Zardari before the announcement.
However, it remained unclear whether the promotion would affect Gen Munir's term of service or extend his tenure beyond the usual retirement timeline.
In a separate decision, the cabinet agreed to retain Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu beyond the end of his current term – though no duration for the extension was provided.
In a gesture of national recognition, the cabinet announced that military officers, soldiers, war veterans, martyrs, and civilians who played pivotal roles during the recent operation would be awarded state honours.
Prime Minister Sharif also congratulated Gen Munir on his promotion to field marshal, praising his leadership during the Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
He highlighted Gen Munir's courage and professional skills in securing success in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, which thwarted enemy plans.
PM Sharif called the promotion a recognition of Munir's invaluable service in defending the nation and restoring regional power balance.
He also commended every soldier who bravely responded to enemy aggression. 'I, along with the nation, take immense pride in Gen Munir and our armed forces' courage and sacrifice,' he added.
Field marshal appointments in Pakistan are rare and largely ceremonial, reflecting both exceptional command in wartime and national symbolic value.
General Munir's promotion revives a rank long absent from the military hierarchy and cements his role in a pivotal chapter of Pakistan's defence history.

Tens of thousands join pro-Palestinian marches

There have been monthly protests in the British capital since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. Photo AFP Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched in European cities calling for an end to the war in Gaza. In London, AFP journalists saw tens of thousands of protesters, who waved Palestinian flags as they marched through the British capital clad in keffiyeh scarves. In Berlin, more than 10,000 people gathered in the centre of the city in support of Gaza, according to police figures. And in the Swiss capital Bern, march organisers estimated that 20,000 people rallied in front of the national parliament, urging the government to back a ceasefire. Thousands also gathered outside a French trade fair near Paris attended by Israeli defence firms, calling for an end to war profiteering and Israel's offensive in Gaza. There have been monthly protests in the British capital since the start of the 20-month-long war between Israel and Hamas, which has ravaged Gaza. Protesters carried signs including "Stop arming Israel" and "No war on Iran" as they marched in the sweltering heat. "It's important to remember that people are suffering in Gaza. I fear all the focus will be on Iran now," said 34-year-old Harry Baker. "I don't have great love for the Iranian regime, but we are now in a dangerous situation," he said, adding that this was his third pro-Palestinian protest. Gaza is suffering from famine-like conditions according to UN agencies in the region following an Israeli aid blockade. Gaza's civil defence agency has reported that hundreds have been killed by Israeli forces while trying to reach the US- and Israeli-backed aid distribution sites. "People need to keep their eyes on Gaza. That's where the genocide is happening," said 60-year-old protester Nicky Marcus. In Berlin, demonstrators gathered mid-afternoon close to the parliament, some chanting "Germany finances, Israel bombs". "You can't sit on the sofa and be silent. Now is the time when we all need to speak up," said protester Gundula, who did not want to give her second name. For Marwan Radwan, the point of the protest was to bring attention to the "genocide currently taking place" and the "dirty work" being done by the German government. In Bern, demonstrators carried banners calling on the federal government to intervene in the war in Gaza, expressing solidarity with Palestinians. The rally there was called by organisations including Amnesty International, the Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the Swiss Trade Union Federation. Slogans included "Stop the occupation", "Stop the starvation, stop the violence", and "Right to self-determination". Some marchers chanted: "We are all the children of Gaza"

PTI denounces US strikes on Iran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vehemently denounced the US strikes on Iran's key nuclear facilities and urged the government to immediately convene an All Parties Conference (APC) to thoroughly deliberate on the rapidly deteriorating regional situation and formulate a consensus-based and clear-cut policy on belligerent Israel, pushing the entire region to the brink of a devastating war. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, in a statement on Sunday, expressed alarm that the regional situation was fast changing and the government's ostrich-like approach could prove disastrous. He emphasised that the current policy of burying heads in the sand and hoping the storm will pass is futile, as the flames of war have already reached Pakistan's doorstep. He underlined that Pakistan can undoubtedly weather the storm, just as it did against India, but the power elites must take the nation into confidence and forge a consensus-driven approach because Pakistan is currently caught between a rock and a hard place. He criticised the government for its 'habit of flattery', which he said now had crossed our national boundaries and it is now visible internationally. He pleaded that Israel could not have invaded Iran without the strong backing and support of the US. He said that the US has not only violated Iran's sovereignty but also breached the UN Charter. He maintained that the excuse for the Israeli attack on Iran was even more absurd than India's recent strike on Pakistan under the pretext of the Pahalgam attack. He said that the US and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a blatantly contradictory and biased approach towards the Muslim world in its pursuit of nuclear capability, while remaining conspicuously silent about Israel's widely acknowledged nuclear arsenal. He demanded that the UN and OIC urge the IAEA to inspect Israel's nuclear sites and work toward a nuclear-free Middle East, rather than targeting Iran under false pretexts—just as was done with Iraq—despite the IAEA's repeated and clear stance that Tehran is nowhere near acquiring a nuclear weapon. Waqas added that Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is intended solely for peaceful purposes. He called for the immediate release of PTI Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan and his inclusion in strategic decision-making regarding the situation arising from Israel's unprovoked attack on Iran and the subsequent US strikes on the country.
