Retro movie BO verdict: Suriya's Tamil actioner makes Rs 110 cr, trade analyst says 'figure is low compared to expectations'

Time of India03-06-2025

Retro movie box office verdict: Suriya's Retro, which hit the screens on May 1, opened to a good response at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. The action drama earned Rs 32 crore worldwide on the first day. It then witnessed some growth over the weekend before dipping on the weekdays. The film's run is now over and the box office verdict is out.
Is Suriya's Retro a hit or a flop?
Suriya, who suffered a setback when Kanguva bombed at the box office, tried to revive his career with Retro. The film created a reasonable amount of buzz among fans as it marked his maiden collaboration with Karthik Subbaraj. Now, the film's verdict is out.
According to Manobala Vijayabalan, a trade analyst, the flick grossed Rs 110 crore at the worldwide box office in its full run.
'Retro grossed around ₹110 cr. The film is an average to hit venture when compared to its low budget. The story was made for a specific set of audience with old fashioned backdrop, hence the figures are low compared to the expectation,'
Retro was shot on a budget of around Rs 60 crore. It needed to gross Rs 120 crore or more globally to emerge as a success but this did not happen. Its lifetime haul is comparable to that of Kanguva. The Siva-directed action drama, which was filmed on a budget of Rs 350 crore, earned around Rs 100 crore in its full run and ended up being a disaster.
Retro has also failed to match the collection of Petta. Karthik's first film with the legendary Rajinikanth grossed Rs 250 crore at the box office despite facing competition from Ajith Kumar's Viswasam.
Retro received mixed reviews with critics lauding the performances but panning the execution. The mixed word-of-mouth affected the film over the weekdays. According to Sacnilk, a trade website, it witnessed a drop of 58% in India on the first Monday itself and things became worse thereafter.
Retro also faced competition from HIT 3, which was released on the same day and opened to a good in the Telugu states. The investigative action thriller earned Rs 38 crore on the first day worldwide.

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Day 3: Aamir Khan's Film Collects Rs 57 Crore On 1st Weekend

Last Updated: RS Prasanna's Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh-starrer Sitaare Zameen Par had a successful first weekend, surpassing Rs 55 crore net in India. Aamir Khan is back, and how! His latest film Sitaare Zameen Par is shining bright at the box office. After just three days in theatres, the heartwarming sports comedy has raked in a solid Rs 57 crore net in India, according to Sacnilk. Directed by RS Prasanna and also starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film had a strong weekend run. Sitaare Zameen Par has been receiving a good response from the audience and critics alike for its emotional depth and powerful storytelling. As per trade reports, Sitaare Zameen Par earned Rs 26.45 crore on Sunday, pushing its total to Rs 57.35 crore net in India. The film, which had an average start at Rs 10.7 crore on Friday, saw an impressive jump of nearly 89 per cent on Saturday with Rs 20.2 crore coming in. Sunday continued the momentum, with the Hindi version recording a 41.76 per cent occupancy and numbers rising steadily through the day. For context, Sitaare Zameen Par is inching closer to surpassing the lifetime India collection of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha, which had wrapped up at Rs 61.36 crore. The film has already outperformed Kesari Chapter 2 (Rs 29.5 crore) and Sunny Deol's Jaat (Rs 26.25 crore) in just its first weekend. However, it still trails behind the likes of Salman Khan's Sikandar, which raked in Rs 74.5 crore in its opening weekend, and Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, which clocked Rs 62.25 crore. Sitaare Zameen Par is considered a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan's 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. The original film followed the moving story of Ishaan, a dyslexic child played by Darsheel Safary, and touched hearts across the nation with its sensitive portrayal of learning disabilities. It also featured Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma. On the other hand, Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama film produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar will make their Hindi cinema debut with the film. The film also boasts a strong supporting cast with seasoned performers like Dolly Ahluwalia, Gurpal Singh, Brijendra Kala, and Ankita Sehgal. The story centres on Gulshan, a former star basketball coach portrayed by Aamir Khan, who is ordered to coach a group of neurodivergent children as part of his community service following a DUI offence. What starts off as a begrudging assignment soon evolves into a life-changing experience for both him and the team. Genelia Deshmukh plays Sunita, Gulshan's supportive wife. N ews18 gave 3.5 rating to Sitaare Zameen Par. A part of our review read, 'Unlike Taare Zameen Par's Nikumbh, Gulshan isn't perfect. This is a flawed, man-child character, dealing with his own traumas, learning to navigate life with the help of those who suffer developmental delays. So far, on paper, Sitaare Zameen Par seems rather fantastic, novel, and heartfelt. And don't get us wrong — it definitely is all of that. But it also has its share of flaws that become a bump in its path to becoming a great film. To start with, at 2 hours 39 minutes, the film appears to be an extremely long and slow-moving affair." Nagarjuna clarifies his ‘real hero' remark over Dhanush in Kuberaa: ‘Film belongs to everyone'

Dhanush, Nagarjuna Akkineni, and Rashmika Mandanna starrer Kuberaa seems to have struck gold already. The movie, released on June 20, is currently ruling the charts and has already registered a substantial number at the box office. Lately, the film struck a bit of controversy when Nagarjuna went on to claim that he felt like the hero of the movie, as it was his character that drove the story forward. This remark did not sit well with Dhanush's fans, who felt that the latter was clearly the one who led the movie entirely. Nagarjuna clarifies his 'real hero' comment At another recent success meet event for Kuberaa, Nagarjuna broke the silence and issued clarification on his previous statement, adding that if he ever wished to take away all the credit for the film alone. He remarked on noticing all the criticism and backlash over his previous remark and said, 'Characters are the pivotal and central point of the film. It's not my cinema. I've seen a lot of memes and trolls on social media for my words at the Kuberaa press meet.' Nagarjuna says Kuberaa belongs to everyone The senior star continued by highlighting that what he meant in his earlier statement was misunderstood, leading to unnecessary controversy. He added, 'I want to make it clear that this film belongs to everyone who worked on it. I'm saying again, this is Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa. It's Deva's cinema, not Dhanush but Deva. This film is Deepak's, Sameera's, and Khushboo's; above all, it belongs to Sekhar Kammula. Thank you so much.' Kuberaa box office collections so far Speaking about the box office dynamics of Kuberaa, the movie is witnessing an upward streak already and has hit the Rs. 50 crore mark worldwide within just 2 days of theatrical release. If the social thriller continues to maintain this trend of collections ahead, it will surely be able to gross close to Rs. 80 crore after its three-day weekend.
