Asean remains a credible partner on global stage, says Thai minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) remains a relevant and credible partner amid increasingly shifting global geopolitical and economic dynamics, said Thailand's Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa.
He emphasised that Asean's cohesiveness and commitment to peace and economic cooperation are key to its resilience.
"These elements are what make Asean strong together,' he told Bernama in an interview on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits held in Malaysia's capital last week.
He said maintaining regional security and stability is vital for Asean to continue to be seen by its external partners as a region of peace and prosperity.
He highlighted several Asean-led mechanisms that have continued to be the cornerstone of the region's security and peace architecture, such as the Asean Regional Forum, East Asia Summit, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
Established in 1976, the TAC is a legally binding code for interstate relations in the region and beyond.
As of October 2024, 55 countries are parties to the TAC while several others are also seeking to accede to the treaty.
"We are moving in the right direction. The concept of Asean strong together will inspire confidence in the global community that Asean is a worthy and credible partner,' said Maris.
Asean was founded in Bangkok on August 8, 1967, as a non-aligned regional response to the Cold War, with Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore as founding members.
Asean today consists of 10 members after the inclusion of Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Timor-Leste is expected to officially join as its 11th member by the end of this year.
With a combined population of almost 700 million people and a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$4 trillion, the bloc is on course to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030.
Since its establishment, the bloc has continued to evolve to meet the challenges of the times, reflecting its pragmatism and strategic role as a constructive convener of powers.
Maris said the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean Community Vision 2045 adopted during the summit is a testament to the bloc's ambition and long-term commitment to build a more integrated, prosperous and resilient future.
The vision is anchored on three core pillars, namely political-security, economic and socio-cultural, and reflects the bloc's inclusive approach to development and integration.
The Thai top diplomat also commended Malaysia's role and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership as Asean Chair 2025.

BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Thailand's Commerce Ministry is positioning the kingdom to capture a greater share of the rapidly expanding global halal food market, which is projected to reach US$3.1 trillion by 2027, as the nation seeks to capitalise on what officials describe as a "golden opportunity". The global halal market, once considered niche, has evolved into a mainstream sector driven by a burgeoning Muslim population and increasing per capita spending amongst Muslim consumers worldwide. United Nations statistics for 2024 show Muslims account for 1.907 billion people, or 23.5% of the world's total population of 8.119 billion. This figure is projected to surge to 2.761 billion by 2050, representing nearly 30% of humanity and underscoring the immense potential of the halal market. According to Salaam Gateway, a leading Islamic economy research institute, the global halal product market was valued at $2.35 trillion in 2024. Food and beverages dominate this expansive market, accounting for US$1.38 trillion—nearly 59% of total halal market value. Other significant sectors include fashion, media and recreation, tourism, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. By 2027, halal food and beverages alone are expected to reach US$1.89 trillion. Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, Director General of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office at the Commerce Ministry, highlighted Thailand's strong position in the sector. In 2024, Thai food exports to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries reached $7.1313 billion, marking robust 6.3% growth. "This solidifies Thailand's presence in the OIC market and signals a golden opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs to capitalise on surging global demand for halal products in 2025 and beyond," Poonpong said. He emphasised that halal food's appeal extends beyond Muslim consumers due to its adherence to strict Islamic production principles, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene. This perception of safety and quality is attracting a wider consumer base, fuelling continuous growth in demand, particularly within OIC nations. Globally, halal food and beverage exports to OIC countries totalled $247.362 billion in 2024, up 6.9% from 2023. Whilst major exporters include Brazil, India, China, Turkey, and the United States, Thailand currently ranks as the 10th largest food exporter to the OIC market. Key importers of halal food and beverages within the OIC include Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. For Thailand, halal food exports represent a crucial economic and trade strategy. Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia collectively form Thailand's largest markets, accounting for 68.5% of its OIC food exports. Key products include rice, tinned tuna, sugar, pet food, and seasonings. Thailand maintains a competitive edge through its product quality, food processing capabilities, and credible halal certification system. OIC countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, represent high-potential markets with substantial average per capita purchasing power and demand for internationally standardised halal food. PM extends aid to struggling single mother, student
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has presented a contribution to Melah Idris, a single mother living in poverty and suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. The contribution was handed over by the Prime Minister's political secretary, Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, when he visited the 63-year-old mother of eight at her home in Kampung Padang, Kuantan. Ahmad Farhan said the senior citizen relied entirely on her children to cover kitchen expenses and utility bills. "Her house is in a poor condition, with the bedroom floor already rotting and no longer safe to live in. "Yet, her face remains calm, as if she keeps all her suffering deep inside so as not to burden anyone. "On behalf of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, I am presenting a small contribution and will look into the most appropriate form of assistance for her, not only in terms of financial aid but also in ensuring a safer place for her to live," he said in a Facebook post shared by the prime minister today. In the same post, Ahmad Farhan expressed hope that no citizen would be left to suffer in silence without receiving proper assistance. In Bachok, Kelantan, PKR central leadership council member Prof Dr Maszlee Malik extended aid from the prime minister to Muhammad Syimir Amar AlMuktar, 18, an underprivileged student from Kampung Pengkalan Chengal, Perupok. He visited the student on Anwar's behalf under the Ziarah Kasih Madani initiative. Maszlee said Muhammad Syimir, who scored 8As in the recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, was facing financial difficulties in continuing his studies at Politeknik Arau, Perlis. "We were informed that he comes from a struggling family, raised by a single mother. "When the prime minister learned of his situation, he immediately wanted to help by providing a laptop. "This government is committed to ensuring no student is left behind due to financial hardship.
