Canadian man wins his fourth major lottery prize
June 11 (UPI) -- An Alberta man scored a lottery jackpot of more than $730,000, marking his fourth major lottery prize -- and his third since August 2024.
The Western Canada Lottery Corp. announced David Serkin, of Lethbridge, won a prize of $731,593.12 in the May 3 Lotto 6/49 Classic drawing.
Serkin previously collected $365,796.56 in the Aug. 20, 2024, Lotto Max drawing, and an additional $731,593.12 in the Nov. 16 Lotto 6/49 drawing.
The man, who has been a regular lottery player since 1982, also collected $182,898.28 from a lottery drawing more than a decade prior to his recent winning streak.
Serkin said his friends and family were shocked to learn of his most recent win.
"I went for coffee with the boys after I checked my ticket," he told WCLC officials. "They asked to see it and said, 'Not again!'"
The player admitted even he had trouble believing his recent luck.
"I know the odds are astronomical," he said. "I don't think it'll happen again, but I still like buying tickets."
He said his prize money will keep his life comfortable.
"I'm a cancer survivor and I'm retired, so I am just grateful for all of it," he said.

"We bought his favorite ticket and my favorite ticket," she said. Her husband's selection, a Diamond 10X ticket, turned out to be a $200,000 winner. "I was like, 'I told you we were going to do it,'" Wells recalled saying. "We did it." Wells said the winnings will go toward buying some land.

Air India identifies crew from crash, announces service reductions

The airline posted to X a statement that identified the 10 crew members killed in the incident, and called them "beloved colleagues, cherished friends, and the soul of every journey they were a part of." Air India also posted the name of the flight's First Officer on Thursday, and then announced that a temporary reduction in flights aboard Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft would begin as of Saturday and continue into mid-July. "The reductions arise from the decision to voluntarily undertake enhanced pre-flight safety checks," the company explained in a social media post, "as well as accommodate additional flight durations arising from airspace closures in the Middle East." "The objective is to restore schedule stability and minimize last-minute inconvenience to passengers," it added. As a result, flights AI169/170 from Amritsar and AI145/146 from Mopa, both Indian cities, to London Gatwick have been suspended until at least July 15, while flight AI961/962 between Delhi, India, and Nairobi, Kenya, has been suspended until at least June 30. The frequency of flights to North America, Europe, Australia and East Asia continue but have been reduced until July 15. Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, was bound for London when it crashed last week in a populated area and struck a medical college shortly after takeoff, killing more than 260 people. Air India publicly identified the captain Tuesday. The investigation into why Flight AI171 crashed continues. It has been publicly stated that the plane had a new engine, as well as another that wasn't due for servicing until December. The aircraft's black box is being sent to the United States for analysis due to its reportedly being damaged in the crash. There has also been speculation that either two of its engines failed or there was either a total hydraulic or electronic malfunction. The entire Air India Dreamliner fleet has been under inspection, and so far, 26 out of its 33 Dreamliners have been returned to service.

Royal Ascot: Catherine, Princess of Wales, cancels at last minute
June 19 (UPI) -- The Princess of Wales unexpectedly pulled out of attending Royal Ascot at the last minute, with officials saying it was related to her recovery from cancer. Kate Middleton skipped the Royal Family's traditional excursion to the event 30 miles southwest of London on Wednesday, which is a key fixture in the country's horse racing calendar. The decision came amid efforts to strike a balance as she eases back into her public role as the wife of Prince William, Kensington Palace said. An official told The New York Times she was "disappointed" not to be able to attend, adding that she needed to find the "right balance" in the level of public engagements she takes on. The decision was very likely unplanned. Two hours before a royal procession along the Straight Mile that kicks off the event was to take place, she was still listed in the official program as being in the second carriage with husband Prince William, behind the king and queen. In the end, William arrived from Windsor in his father's carriage along with Queen Camilla and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al Saud, a member of Saudi Arabia's Royal Family. It was the 200th anniversary of the procession, which was begun by King George IV in 1825. On that occasion, the Duke of Wellington rode along in George's carriage. Carole Middleton, Kate's mother, did attend the event. The princess has been gradually returning to her public duties after announcing she was in remission in January, with her most recent appearance at an Order of the Royal Garter service in Windsor, where she was seen smiling and chatting. Two days before that, on Saturday, she attended the Trooping of the Color in London, a military parade celebrating the monarch's official birthday. It was the second consecutive year the princess had missed Royal Ascot. She was unable to attend in 2024 as it came three months after she announced she had been diagnosed with cancer in March. However, The New York Times speculated that her absence on Wednesday may have had nothing to do with her recovery, but was related instead to the event itself or the weather. King Charles is a fellow cancer survivor, receiving his diagnosis in February 2024, three weeks after he was hospitalized for treatment for an enlarged prostate at the same hospital where his daughter-in-law was recovering from major abdominal surgery that would take months to heal. The late Queen Elizabeth II, somewhat of a racing fanatic, was closely linked with Royal Ascot.
