Federal and provincial agriculture ministers visit producers in Saskatchewan

CTV News6 days ago

Left to right: APAS president Bill Prybylski, Sask. Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison, Heath MacDonald Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Senator Todd Lewis.
Canada's new agriculture minister visited key stakeholders in Saskatchewan to discuss international trading concerns.
'This could be a bit of history in the making, having a liberal minister here, a minister from Saskatchewan, a conservative, and having a senator,' Agriculture and Agri-foods Minister Heath MacDonald told CTV News. 'All three of us at one farm on the same day, talking about the benefits and the economic benefits of agriculture across this country and how important it is to our economy.'
For the multi-day trip, MacDonald accompanied Saskatchewan's Minister of Agriculture Daryl Harrison, Senator Todd Lewis, and other producers during a visit to a farm south of Regina.
Aside from strengthening the federal and provincial working relationship, officials discussed key issues like trade and transportation, port infrastructure, regulatory issues and trade disputes with the U.S. and China.
'Those are things that we need to continue to work on, keep the lines of communication open, and see where the G7 takes us,' MacDonald explained, referring to the upcoming meeting of global leaders in Kananaskis, Alta.
Harrison said having the minister travel to the province to hear directly from farmers about ongoing concerns, speaks volume to, 'his commitment to agriculture.'
He shared some of the main priorities that were discussed with the group.
'We're talking about our business risk management programs for one. They are cost-shared with the federal government as well, that's important. Then when it comes to trade, certainly China is a big topic as well as the U.S. Those are two of our largest trading partners and we want to make sure those relationships are ongoing,' Harrison said.
'Then the reliability of getting our products to tidewater is very key. You can't mention agriculture without having the transportation and the ports because it all connects. Saskatchewan is a trading province and Canada is a trading nation. That's just the key for the success of agriculture here in the province.'
Senator Lewis also pointed out the essential role Saskatchewan plays in Canada's agriculture industry.
'It's all about trade right now and where we're going to be with the negotiations internationally, be it with the United States or Europe, [or] Saskatchewan agriculture, Canadian agriculture, experts around the world,' said Lewis.
'We need to be at the front end of any trade discussion. That's where agriculture is and that's where agriculture needs to be.'
With agriculture being the main economic driver in the province, Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) President Bill Prybylski said it's critical to keep an open dialogue with federal officials.
'We know that agriculture in general across the country is somewhere around seven per cent of the GDP, which is a fairly significant contributor to the economy of the country,' he said.
'Here in Saskatchewan it's even more so … the industry itself, we rely on trades, which is big for the country. Between agriculture and trade, there's a lot of issues that need to be resolved," he added.
'We certainly look forward to working with the ministers to resolve some of those issues.'

Sask. government says as many as 30 incidents under investigation for arson related to wildfires

Sask. Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod says the opposition is playing politics and spreading misinformation when it comes to use of new planes in the firefight Sask. Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod says the opposition is playing politics and spreading misinformation when it comes to use of new planes in the firefight Sask. Public Safety Minister on why a new plane was grounded during fire fight The Government of Saskatchewan says that as many as 30 incidents are being investigated regarding intentional arson related to wildfires in the province this year. Tim McLeod said that investigations remain ongoing and he expects police to announce more charges. So far, two arson charges have been laid by RCMP regarding the Ditch02 fire near Weyakwin which forced multiple evacuations. 'I know that there are many others that are being investigated, last I heard in the neighbourhood of 30 individuals are suspected of and being investigated for intentional arson and that is just an absolute shame when you think about the devastation that these fires cause,' McLeod said during an interview with CTV Morning Live Saskatchewan on Wednesday. While McLeod stated that '30 individuals' are suspected of arson in connection to wildfires in the province, SPSA President Marlo Pritchard clarified that '30 incidents' are under investigation. 'First of all, it's not 30 people. There's 30 incidents that are being investigated as intentional starts or arson investigations,' he explained, during Wednesday's wildfire update. 'There have been charges laid in at least two of those incidents by the RCMP, and I'm not aware of any other charges as of this time.' According to McLeod, it's the province's full belief that police investigations will lead to full prosecutions for people found to be responsible for intentionally starting wildfires. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has confirmed that 350 values have been lost in wildfires to date, with the number expected to exceed 500 following more investigations that includes assessing the community of Denare Beach later this week. Last week the SPSA said that many of the wildfires in Saskatchewan this year were set accidentally by humans, but that they believed at least 30 were intentionally set. So far in 2025 the province has seen 261 wildfires, well above the five-year average of 157. Currently there are 17 active wildfires, three are considered not contained. However, recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have allowed crews to take a more offensive approach to fighting wildfires and fire growth has been minimal for the better part of two weeks. All but five evacuations have ended in the province. According to the SPSA, Creighton, Denare Beach, East Trout Lake, Whelan Bay and priority individuals in Cumberland House remain evacuated. A provincial fire ban was also lifted this week as well as a ban on ATV and UTV vehicles. The province will provide an update regarding the current wildfire situation at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Vancouver lawyer suspended for submitting false documents in support of client's $3.3M loan application

A Vancouver lawyer has admitted to improperly notarizing documents and solemnly declaring affidavits that contained information he knew was false in order to help a corporate client secure a $3.3-million loan from a U.S. bank. Jason Chieh-Sheng Wang admitted his misconduct in a consent agreement with the Law Society of B.C., a summary of which was published online last week. According to the document, Wang was retained by 'a group of companies' in April 2023 to facilitate the loan application. 'Upon being retained, the lawyer was advised that the client was in difficult financial circumstances, and that it wished to obtain a loan from the lender on an urgent basis,' the summary reads. The loan was secured by 'five pieces of artwork as collateral,' according to the document. None of the parties involved in the situation – other than Wang himself – are named in the consent agreement summary. Instead, the document uses parties' initials. 'The loan was personally guaranteed by ZYZ and JM, whose respective families held the majority of the shares of the client,' the document reads. 'The loan also required the approval of their respective spouses, YP and LW, documented by spousal consents.' The lender told Wang it needed the spousal consent forms – along with other documents prepared in the U.S. – notarized, something the lawyer said would be impractical because some of the parties whose signatures were required were located in China. The bank eventually agreed that Wang could notarize the signatures in question via video call. Wang 'purported to notarize' four documents on May 15, 2023, but he had not actually met the signatories via video call, or at all, according to the consent agreement summary. The lawyer also created three affidavits in which he swore that the signatories had joined him on a video call and shown him both sides of their government-issued photo IDs before signing the documents. 'The lawyer solemnly declared the contents of the affidavits of execution to be true when he knew that he had not met with any of the signatories … via video conference or at all, and had not witnessed any of their signatures,' the summary reads. Wang also admitted to deleting WeChat messages he had exchanged with the client's representatives, in which he agreed to proceed with notarizing the documents without the requisite video call. 'The lawyer knew or ought to have known that deleting this client correspondence was contrary to his obligation to maintain and preserve his client's files and records," the summary reads. For all of this admitted misconduct, Wang agreed to serve a one-month suspension, which began on June 16. In accepting the consent agreement, the law society's discipline panel considered three mitigating factors:
