KUALA LUMPUR: The police are conducting a security simulation exercise in preparation for the 46th Asean Summit, to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), beginning May 23 with a senior officials' meeting.
The simulation, involving convoys ferrying heads of government and their delegation, was conducted based on actual movement schedules, with personnel on duty around the clock from the beginning of this week until next Friday (May 30).
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (operations) deputy director DCP M.V. Sri Kumar said that more than 6,200 officers and personnel have been assigned for duty throughout the summit, with the number expected to increase as needed.
"In addition to route control, personnel are also tasked with monitoring movement and overseeing security preparations, including the use of metal detectors and facial recognition technology," he said when met during the exercise at KLCC.
In addition, Sri Kumar urged the public to understand the significance of this national event and to cooperate fully with the authorities.
"We are only implementing phased road closures for a week, to ensure the smooth running and safety of the event," he said.
He also advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in and around the capital, during this period.
The 46th Asean Summit will begin with senior officials' meetings on Friday (May 23), followed by ministerial-level meetings on Sunday, while the leaders' summit will commence next Monday.
Themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', the summit aims to serve as a foundation for regional and global engagement.
Malaysia is committed to strengthening Asean centrality, fostering economic cooperation, and championing the principles of inclusivity and sustainability.
In conjunction with the summit, six highways and 25 major roads in the capital will be closed or diverted in stages to facilitate smooth traffic flow and ensure the security of the event. - Bernama

Indonesia confirms US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz's passage through Straits of Melaka

JAKARTA (Bernama) -- Indonesia's military said Saturday that the United States (US) aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was transiting the Strait of Malacca in line with international maritime law when it was last detected last week. The vessel was travelling from the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Singapore Strait and the Strait of Malacca, the Indonesian Armed Forces Information Centre (Puspen TNI) said. "The ship was exercising its right of transit passage under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),' the centre's head, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, stated in a statement. He noted that the convention allows foreign warships to pass through international straits without prior notification, provided they do not pose a threat to the security of coastal states. The statement came in response to public concern after a video showing the vessel near Aceh province on June 17 circulated widely on local social media, amid rising tensions in the Middle East involving Israel and Iran. According to the Indonesian navy, the USS Nimitz was last detected with its automatic identification system (AIS) active in waters north of Belawan, near Medan in North Sumatra, on Tuesday. Kristomei said the Indonesian Armed Forces continued to monitor all foreign maritime activity in the country's waters and remained vigilant in safeguarding national sovereignty. - Bernama

UN Chief 'gravely Alarmed' By US Strike Against Iran, Warns About 'Dangerous Escalation'

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern Saturday after the US carried out strikes against Iran, warning about a "dangerous escalation" in the region, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge - and a direct threat to international peace and security," Guterres wrote on X. His remarks came after US President Donald Trump said American forces completed "very successful" airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites amid fears of a wider conflagration in the region.

Japan to provide defence equipment to Thailand, seven other nations

According to Kyodo news agency the eight countries -- also including East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Sri Lanka -- are expected to be designated as the recipients of Japan's "official security assistance" (OSA) framework, designed for like-minded partners, for fiscal 2025 from April, the source said. The government is considering providing them Japanese-made drones to help in their natural disaster relief and maritime surveillance missions, according to the source. Japan launched the OSA scheme in April 2023 to help developing countries strengthen their defence capabilities amid security concerns such as the Chinese forces' increasing assertiveness at sea and in the air. In the past two fiscal years through 2024, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines were recipients of the assistance programme. In May, Japan gave the Fiji navy a rescue boat and surveillance equipment, in its first delivery under the OSA framework. In its fiscal 2025 initial budget, Japan earmarked 8.1 billion yen (US$56 million) for OSA assistance, up from 2 billion yen in fiscal 2023 and 5 billion yen in fiscal 2024. - Bernama-Kyodo
