Rockfall at Indonesian limestone quarry kills eight
CIREBON: At least eight people were killed and a dozen injured Friday in a rockfall at a limestone quarry on Indonesia's Java island, police said.
The company overseeing the mine was operating legally but safety standards were lacking, according to West Java governor Dedi Mulyadi, who said he has ordered its closure following the collapse.
Workers and heavy equipment were buried when rocks suddenly crumbled at the mining site in the city of Cirebon in West Java province at around 09:30 am local time (0230 GMT).
'We are now focusing on evacuating victims. Until now, eight people have been found dead, and 12 others were injured and have been taken to hospitals,' local police chief, Sumarni, who like many Indonesians has one name told AFP.
Rescuers were still scouring the site to find more victims who might still be trapped under the debris, deploying excavators for the search effort.
Friday's incident was the second time the quarry collapsed. Parts of the mine collapsed in February but there were no casualties reported.
'I decided to shut down the pit permanently, not just this pit but also other pits nearby,' Dedi told Metro TV.
Mining accidents are common across the mineral-rich Southeast Asian archipelago, especially in unlicensed sites where safety protocols are often ignored.
In 2023, eight workers died after being trapped in an illegal gold mine in Central Java.
In July, last year, at least 23 people died and 35 others were missing when a landslide hit a remote village near an illegal gold mine on the central island of Sulawesi.

Niclas Brundell, a trail guide who lives in nearby Canmore, said he was hiking in the area with his wife Thursday when they both started seeing concerning signs of rocks tumbling and boulders the size of tires starting to fall. 'This was unimaginable to me that such a big piece of mountain would fall off,' he said. As rocks started rolling at the top of the waterfall, he said they didn't hit anyone, but he and his wife wondered why nobody seemed to be reacting. 'Then all of a sudden I hear the start of another rockfall and I turn around and the whole mountainside is coming off.' He said the slab seemed about 50 meters (164 feet) wide and 20 meters (60 feet) deep, and he and his wife started sprinting. When he turned around, he could see a group of between 15 and 30 people at the waterfall disappear under a cloud of dust. 'The only place I've ever seen something similar is like watching videos from 9/11 when you see New York being cast over,' he said. He said there was a roar 'and I just didn't see them anymore.' Brundell said when they got far enough to feel safe he sent a satellite message to Parks Canada while his wife ran to a nearby lodge to call for help. He said it's a popular trail because it's considered relatively easy and on any given summer day there are 15 people or more hiking the trail.

Indonesian police arrest three Australian men over shooting in Bali
Indonesian police have arrested three Australian men for a shooting incident that killed a fourth at a villa on the resort island of Bali, its police chief said on Wednesday. Police detained on Tuesday the three suspects whom they accused of having 'prepared and executed' the shooting, Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya said. 'We have arrested three suspects,' he told reporters, adding that they had been charged with premeditated murder and could face the death penalty if it was proved. Police declined to identify the men, however, referring to them only by the initials C, D and T. Saturday's shooting just after midnight killed Zivan Radmanovic, 32 and seriously wounded a fifth Australian, Sanar Ghanim, 35. Indonesian authorities previously said they had arrested two people for the shooting, one at Soekarno-Hatta airport near the capital, Jakarta, as he prepared to leave the country. 'We arrested him just before he managed to leave,' Adityajaya said. The other two were detained abroad, after police sought the cooperation of Interpol in Southeast Asia, they said, but declined to say where the arrests were made. They also seized items such as a 9-mm gun, a motorcycle and two cars the suspects had used to flee the scene of the crime, Adityajaya said. Police have not given a motive for the crime, saying their investigation continues, with Adityajaya adding that a further suspect could be identified as the plot's mastermind.
