Two of Canada's top envoys to the U.S. just told reporters the two sides have agreed to accelerate talks about reaching a trade and security deal.
'Those were the instructions that we got from our side. And obviously the Americans share that view,' Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told the group gathered at the resort in Kananaskis. He was flanked by Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador to the U.S.
They said they met with U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer and officials after the bilateral meeting and have plans to meet again later this week.
Neither got even close to answering questions about what the holdups are.

Retail sales inched up in April from sales gains at car dealers, but likely dropped in May

Retail sales rose 0.3 per cent to $70.1 billion in April, helped by gains in sales at new and used car dealers, says Statistics Canada. However, the agency says its preliminary figures for May point to a drop of 1.1 per cent for that month. For April, six of nine sub-sectors were up, as sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers gained 1.9 per cent, boosted by a 2.9 per cent increase at new car dealers and a 2.1 per cent rise at used car dealers. Sales at sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, book and miscellaneous retailers rose one per cent, while furniture, home furnishings, electronics and appliances retailers gained 0.8 per cent. Sales at clothing, clothing accessories, shoes, jewelry, luggage and leather goods retailers fell 2.2 per cent. Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors and motor vehicle and parts dealers, gained 0.1 per cent in April. Accenture bookings drop eclipses upbeat revenue, unveils AI-focused revamp

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Tuesday, March 11, 2025. (AP Photo/Richard Drew) Accenture reported a second straight drop in quarterly new bookings on Friday and unveiled an organizational revamp to bolster its AI consulting services, as a cutback in U.S. government spending and economic uncertainty pressure growth. The bookings decline overshadowed the consulting giant's better-than-expected quarterly revenue and an increase in its annual forecasts, sending its shares down per cent before the bell. Consulting and IT firms are under pressure as U.S. tariffs and accompanying economic uncertainty force companies to rethink their spending plans, while the Trump administration's cost-cutting efforts have led to contract cancellations and delays. Accenture said bookings - which represent future revenue secured through contracts - fell six per cent to US$19.70 billion in its fiscal third quarter, below the Visible Alpha estimate of US$21.54 billion and worse than the three per cent decline in the previous quarter. CEO Julie Sweet said 30 clients recorded quarterly bookings of greater than US$100 million, compared with 32 in the previous quarter. Generative AI bookings totaled about US$1.5 billion. Rival IBM also reported a small consulting revenue drop in April and said 15 of its U.S. government contracts worth about $100 million were shelved under the cost-cutting drive, while Indian IT firms including Infosys have warned of a tough year ahead. To navigate the uncertainty, Accenture plans to focus on AI consulting with the creation of a new business unit called reinvention services, which would combine its AI offerings and be led by Manish Sharma, the head of its Americas business. Sharma will be succeeded by chief operating officer John Walsh, while Americas COO Kate Hogan will take over as global COO. In the May quarter, Accenture posted revenue of US$17.7 billion, beating analysts' average estimate of US$17.30 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. That growth was powered by higher spending by its clients in the financial services industry. Profit per share of US$3.49 also beat estimates of US$3.32. Accenture now expects annual revenue growth of six to seven per cent, compared with its earlier expectation of five to seven per cent. --- Reporting by Meghana Khare and Jaspreet Singh in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini Ganguli

City of Ottawa spending $10 million for land to build new Barrhaven community facility

The City of Ottawa is spending $10 million to purchase land for a new cultural and civic hub in Barrhaven and a future LRT station for the O-Train. A report for the finance and corporate services committee meeting on June 30 recommends the city purchase a 4.18-acre parcel of land at the north-west corner of the future intersection of Chapman Mills Drive and Riocan Avenue. The land will be purchased from the South Nepean Development Corporation. Staff with Parks and Facilities Planning Services, the Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services Department, and the Ottawa Public Library are planning to design and build a new facility in the Barrhaven Town Centre. The project will include a 15,000 sq. ft. cultural centre with performance and event space, a 3,000 sq. ft. seniors' space, a library branch, a councillor ward office and an urban plaza with a possible water and ice feature. Barrhaven land The City of Ottawa is buying a 4.18-acre parcel of vacant land at the north-west corner of the future intersection at Chapman Mills Drive and Riocan Avenue. (City of Ottawa report) The land could also be a future site for an LRT station if the city expands the O-Train into Barrhaven. 'The new civic hub will become a valued community asset, focal point and destination that will resonate with the people of Barrhaven and instill a sense of civic and cultural pride,' staff said in the report. 'The district library branch will serve residents in the South Nepean communities of Riverside South and Barrhaven.' Staff say the proposed civic complex is in the preliminary design stages and the LRT design will 'follow in the coming years.' There is no word on when construction will begin on the new complex. The City of Ottawa received funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the new facility.
