Zac Purton creates history again in Champions Day warm-up with Sha Tin four-timer
Champion jockey sets a new Hong Kong record for all-weather wins after striking top form on Sunday
Zac Purton broke another of Douglas Whyte's all-time records and warmed up for Champions Day in style with a four-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Having soared past Whyte's record of 1,813 Hong Kong wins in January, Purton added another to his list of achievements when he eclipsed the benchmark of wins on Sha Tin's all-weather track.
The seven-time champion Hong Kong jockey booted home Meepmeep, Chill Kaka and Bottomuptogether on the dirt to lift his career tally to 165 wins on the surface. Whyte held the record with 163 wins.
'It's good to tick that off. It's a track where you need a horse that likes it and is in form,' Purton said.

'When they are in form, it really helps. I like ticking those boxes off, another one.'
Purton struck top form at the perfect time as he prepares for a big Champions Day assault on Sunday, headlined by the ride on superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m).
The Australian rider will also be aboard in-form New Zealand galloper El Vencedor in the Group One QE II Cup (2,000m) and Galaxy Patch in the Group One Champions Mile.
Racing on dirt for the first time, Bottomuptogether maintained his consistent form from the turf to make all in the Class Two Kowloon Bay Handicap (1,200m).
Sent off the $5.45 second favourite, the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained gelding fired to the front from gate four and was never headed when blitzing his rivals by two and a quarter lengths.
Sing Dragon, who was heavily backed into $2.9 favouritism, ran on for second ahead of Beauty Waves, who could back up in the Chairman's Sprint Prize after a solid dirt debut.
Unbeaten from his first three starts, Bottomuptogether has also notched a Happy Valley win and three seconds in a consistent campaign this term.
'Everyone said he trialled six times on the dirt for four wins and two seconds, but sometimes we don't know whether they can win in a race on the dirt,' Lor said.
'He had a good draw and went forward to lead on his own. Zac said he went smoothly and won easily. There aren't many dirt races in Hong Kong, so we'll maybe look at the turf at Sha Tin or Happy Valley next.'
John Size's Meepmeep started Purton's bumper day with a first win at start 13 in the Class Five Luk Wu Handicap (1,650m), while Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's Chill Kaka made it back-to-back wins with a tough performance in the Class Four Ma Tau Kok Handicap (1,650m).
Purton's other winner, Top Dragon, broke the Class Four 1,400m record at Sha Tin with a breakthrough success in the Tsing Lung Tau Handicap.
After two close seconds from his first four starts, the Chris So Wai-yin-trained gelding delivered on his potential with an effortless victory by two and a quarter lengths.
'He's got ability, he's only three-years-old and I always tell the owners he's a good horse,' So said after Top Dragon lowered Perfect Pair's 2020 class record by 0.04 seconds.
'He's just needed a bit of time. So far, in five starts, he's won and run two seconds and we knew that he's got ability, but I didn't want to rush him.'
Lor finished with a double after the progressive South Star won the final race under Andrea Atzeni, who notched a brace of his own after also booting home the Size-trained Must Go. Trainers' championship leader Size moved to 50 wins for the term after also preparing a double.

It's the end of the long season so you never know how the other horses are going to be, either.' While Pray For Mir is stepping up in trip, his rival Cap Ferrat drops in distance after running third behind Voyage Bubble in last month's Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m). The pair jump from adjacent gates and while Pray For Mir is expected to push forward from barrier eight, Hugh Bowman will have some work to do finding cover for Cap Ferrat from the ninth alley. 'He's in great form,' said Bowman of this year's Hong Kong Derby hero, who will carry 126lb. 'It's a lovely race for him and he gets in with a lovely weight. 'I would have really liked a soft draw with him, but it is what it is. I galloped him the other day on the grass and he gave me a really smooth feel. I think it's a lovely set up for him.'

Photos: Kenneth Chan Bidding to add to what has already been a fruitful campaign, Andrea Atzeni has declared he wouldn't swap Patch Of Theta for any other ride in Sunday's Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin. The Sardinian jockey has legitimate claims in the final two features of the season, with Patch Of Theta and his Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) mount Bundle Award shaping as strong contenders. Atzeni, who sits third in the jockeys' championship with 54 wins, hops aboard Patch Of Theta for the first time as Francis Lui Kin-wai's classy five-year-old chases a second Group Three triumph this term. Victorious in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1,400m) in January, the Zoustar gelding put the writing on the wall with a fast-finishing third to Helios Express in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) last start. 'His last run was very good. If he can repeat that, he shouldn't be too far away. To be honest, I'd say I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race. 'I think 1,400m is his perfect trip because he's not short of speed and he can travel strong. Sometimes 1,200m looks a little bit sharp and a mile, although he's won over it, can be a little bit far for him.' Patch Of Theta emerged as one of Lui's more progressive gallopers during his championship-winning campaign last season with four wins – all over 1,400m at Sha Tin. Since winning a Class Two mile and the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, he has been tested at a much higher level and, despite finishing well back in his two Group One starts, he was not disgraced. Atzeni highlighted another progressive Lui galloper in Packing Hermod, who shoots for a third consecutive win, and Group One victors Beauty Eternal and Invincible Sage as Patch Of Theta's major rivals on Sunday. He ran very well the other day in the mile-and-a-half race,' Atzeni said. I didn't get stuck behind horses but if I got a slightly better run in the straight, I think I would have finished a lot closer. 'It's a competitive race, but with the weight difference I think he's definitely well in.' 'Blazing Wukong is a really nice horse. He trialled the other day and looked like he's sharpened up from his first run,' Atzeni said. 'It looks like a nice race, but I do like my horse and I think whatever he does this season, he's going to be a much better horse for next year. 'South Star is another horse I like a lot. It's a very good race with some young horses who could be pretty smart next season taking each other on.'

Trained by Noriyuki Hori in Japan, the Lord Kanaloa galloper has twice chased home Ka Ying Rising this season, first when third in December's Group One Hong Kong Sprint (1,200m) before his second-placed finish in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) in April. In-between those runs was a fantastic win in the Group One Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1,200m) at Chukyo in March and he is the joint-highest rated horse in the field. He shares that honour with Lazzat, a French raider who chased home Voyage Bubble in the Group One Hong Kong Mile (1,600m) at Sha Tin in December and has since dropped in distance to devastating effect. Storm Boy – placed at Group One level in Australia last year – was the talk of the town before his stable debut for Aidan O'Brien in the Group Two Greenlands Stakes (1,200m) at the Curragh, but he trailed in last as the short-priced favourite. His trainer has subsequently suggested he 'had never been galloped or worked' before that start, so an improved effort can be expected on that evidence. The chief British hope is the Kevin Ryan-trained Inisherin, who won the Group One Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) at last year's Royal meeting. Godolphin's globetrotter has struck at Group One level twice since his Sha Tin romp last May, most recently in the Group One Breeders' Cup Turf (2,400m) at Del Mar in November. Charlie Appleby's star will clash with Al Riffa, who wears blinkers for the first time. The Wootton Bassett galloper landed the Group One Grosser Preis von Berlin (2,400m) at Hoppengarten last August and has been running well in defeat internationally this year, including when fourth in the Group One Prix Ganay (2,100m) at Longchamp in April. He is set to relish the extra 300m at a stiff Ascot track and looks a big danger to the likely short-priced favourite. Other dangers include Amo Racing's new purchase Ghostwriter, who is yet to strike at Group One level but posted a career-best effort when chasing home Soul Rush and Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m) at Meydan in April.
