The £346million theme park that wanted to be 'England's Disneyland' - but was never built

Daily Mail23-04-2025

If Brits want to go to Disneyland, they need to travel to Paris, at the very least – but the UK almost had a rival theme park built in the 1980s.
Called WonderWorld, the park was granted planning permission in 1981 to be built on Priors Hall Park, a 1,000-acre disused quarry, around two miles from Corby, Northamptonshire.
The ambitious £346 million project promised a British answer to Disney World's Epcot, which opened to the public in Orlando in 1982.
Like Epcot, the attraction was to include 13 themed villages built around a central bowl, measuring 700m in diameter.
Six of these areas were due to open in the summer of 1992, and were expected to welcome four million visitors a year.
WonderWorld would also be home to high-tech rides, including one designed by Monty Python's Terry Gilliam, which would take riders on a canoe through the human body.
If the park had opened, there would have been an open-air concert hall designed to look like one of the Martian tripods from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds and a 10,000-seat sports stadium.
Meanwhile, botanist David Bellamy was helping to plan a mock safari and astronomer Sir Patrick Moore was involved in creating an observatory.
There would also be educational centres, themed restaurants, a conservation area and lots of places to shop.
The theme park was only going to be the start of the resort too, as seven hotels were due to be built, as well as an 18-hole golf course, and 100 villas.
The overall ambition was to launch a new leisure industry built around 'British heritage, folklore, science and innovation'.
In 1985, one of the architects, Derek Walker, told the BBC: 'The basic ingredients [for WonderWorld] are very simple: entertainment at the very highest level. It's participatory and it's incredibly educational.
'[WonderWorld] will offer the best of British design.'
The project was estimated to cost £346million in total and aimed for an initial opening in 1985.
And Group Five, who were due to be the developers, even had support from the local area including county authorities and the Commission for New Towns.
However, due to rising costs, planning delays and difficulty securing long-term funding, some of the backers pulled out.
The plans eventually faded into obscurity and a large WonderWorld sign and a small wooden cabin were the only two parts of the entire resort that were built.
There are now more than 1,000 houses where WonderWorld was meant to stand and there are plans to build around 5,000 more in the future.
And, while WonderWorld didn't succeed, a huge new Universal theme park is officially set to open in Bedford in 2031 - after a deal was closed by the Government.
The Bedfordshire attraction will be one of the largest and most advanced theme parks in Europe, with a 500-room hotel and a retail and entertainment complex planned along with the theme park.

'Hefty fine' warning for Brits visiting Greek island over strict driving rule

British tourists flying over to one of the popular Greek island of Santorini this summer have been issued a stark driving rule, as experts reveal a simple mistake could leave you with a 'hefty fine' UK holidaymakers heading to one of the most desirable Greek islands could get stung with a 'hefty' fine when hiring a car. Despite a surprising slump in visitor numbers and growing cries from fed-up locals, millions of selfie-stick-waving tourists will still flock to Santorini this year - enticed by blue-domed buildings, pristine beaches, and Instagram-worthy sunsets. Measuring just 29.4 square miles, the tiny island is ideal for those comfortable with hiring a car. ‌ It's a great way to explore all of the island's nooks and crannies and escape from the coach-load of cruise passengers that get herded in everything morning. You can check out stunning vineyards over at Venetsanos Winery, spend the day at the iconic red beach, or have dinner in Fira, the capital famed for its whitewashed buildings and buzzing atmosphere. ‌ There are a slew of hire car companies on the island, meaning prices can get competitively low. Still, it is worth booking in advance to secure a bargain, especially if you're travelling during the peak period. Make sure you go with a reputable vendor to afford being ripped off too. Experts over at Lonely Planet, who advise hiring a car through your accommodation provider, say having your own vehicle can give you 'full freedom' to explore the island - but warns there are certain 'drawbacks'. "The relatively short drives along the island's diminutive road network can be harrowing due to narrow lanes, cliffside plunges and incessant peak season traffic," they explained. "Parking is also stressful in Fira and at the beaches. Expect hefty fines if you decide to leave your car in an unapproved spot. A good strategy is to rent a car for just a day or two of exploration, thus saving yourself from the attendant hassles at other times." Parking in clearly-designated spaces - that may incur a small fee - is your best practice. You can always ask your hotel for recommended parking spots, or check Google reviews if you're unsure. According to reports, parking violations come with a fine of up to €80 (approximately £68.39), so it's never really worth the risk. ‌ "I have hired a car in Santorini and this evening got a parking ticket and my number plates taken away," one tourist wrote on Facebook back in 2023. "I know I have to pay a fine at [the] post office in Thera but how do I get the number plates back?" If anything like this happens to you whilst away, contact the company you rented your car from. It is still your responsibility to pay the fine, but staff may be able to help explain the process - and get your number plates back. Cycling is another popular way of navigating Santorini, which is a great way to avoid any steep fines. However, prepare for your thighs to burn as the island is filled with harsh inclines and twisty roads. "Add in drivers maniacally speeding to make up for time spent stalled in traffic and the challenges multiply," Lonely Planet added. "Still, you can easily rent a bike on the island from multiple sources. Ask about e-bikes, which are becoming more available in Santorini, unless the many hills fit into your training scheme for the Tour de France." *You can fly directly to Santorini from London, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. Return fares cost as little as £56 in July, based on Skyscanner listings.

Windrush campaigners urge the Government to save Notting Hill Carnival

The west London carnival is in jeopardy, its chairman Ian Comfort said in a letter on Wednesday, when he asked Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to provide urgent funding to save the event. Jacqueline McKenzie, a campaigner and human rights lawyer who helped victims of the Windrush scandal, said the carnival holds 'huge national and international significance'. 'The Government needs to recognise this and act urgently to protect it,' Ms McKenzie said. In the late 1950s, Notting Hill became home to many people from the Caribbean who arrived in Britain on Windrush and accompanying ships, and the carnival was founded by pioneers of that generation. Ms McKenzie said the carnival being at risk 'adds insult to injury' for victims of the Windrush scandal. 'It should not be lost on us that these funding concerns coincide with Windrush Day on Sunday,' she said. 'To see this celebration in jeopardy whilst so many of the Windrush generation continue to fight for justice following the Home Office scandal only adds insult to injury. 'Carnival embodies the fundamental role of Black and Caribbean communities in Britain, and the Government should be upholding the Windrush legacy instead of undermining it.' The carnival attracts around two million people over the August bank holiday, and Susan Hall, leader of the Conservatives on the London Assembly, previously said the event was a 'victim of its own success' and a 'disaster waiting to happen' because of the large number of attendees. City Hall said it has been working with partners to ensure the safety of carnival-goers, which it described as 'paramount'. Professor Patrick Vernon, a cultural historian and Windrush campaigner, said: 'Notting Hill Carnival is far more than a street event — it is a vital cultural institution with both national and international significance. 'As the second-largest carnival in the world, second only to Rio de Janeiro, it underscores London's position as a leading global capital of diversity, creativity and cultural exchange.' Professor Vernon campaigned for a national Windrush Day following the 2018 scandal when it was revealed thousands of British people, mainly of Caribbean origin, were wrongly classed as illegal immigrants – with many deported while others faced difficulty securing work, accessing healthcare or housing. 'The injustice faced by the Windrush Generation in recent years makes the threat to Notting Hill Carnival all the more painful,' Professor Vernon said. 'It is a celebration born of resistance, resilience, and unity – a legacy that should be upheld, not undermined. To allow this cornerstone of Black British identity to fall into jeopardy is to further betray the communities who have already given so much. 'As we approach the 70th anniversary of this extraordinary event, we are reminded that Notting Hill Carnival represents the very best of Britain: unity in diversity, creativity in adversity, and joy in community. Now more than ever, these are values worth defending.' Glenda Caesar, director of the Windrush National Organisation, also urged the Government to step in to save the event, adding: 'In the face of historical and ongoing injustices experienced by people of colour, the carnival stands not only as a celebration of resilience, heritage and identity but also as a powerful symbol of unity and inclusion. 'Supporting this event affirms the UK's commitment to embracing diversity, acknowledging its multicultural roots, and fostering a society where all communities feel seen, valued and empowered.' Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter Zahara ditches diamond ring on Disneyland date as family tensions rise

Brad Pitt 's daughter Zahara ditched the diamond ring on her finger during a Disneyland date with her boyfriend amid engagement rumors. The daughter of the Fight Club star and his ex-wife Angelina Jolie fueled rumors earlier this month but left her ring finger bare this time while out with her beau. Zahara, 20, was seen holding hands with her boyfriend Elijah Cooper as they enjoyed the weekend in Anaheim, California on Friday. The pair wore matching outfits for their date and were also seen sporting matching Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse ears. For their day at the amusement park, the couple coordinated in white T-shirts and light wash jeans. The pair appeared attached at the hip as they enjoyed a loved-up outing to kick off the weekend. The aspiring actress has been estranged from her famous father and had a strained relationship with him ever since her parents split up nearly a decade ago. Zahara is currently a college student at Spelman College in Atlanta and dropped her father's surname during her sorority induction ceremony as she now goes by Zahara Marley Jolie. A little over a week ago, she was seen in high spirits after a romantic dinner date and sparked engagement rumors when she was seen with a massive diamond ring on that finger. She and her boyfriend kept a low profile as they headed home after grabbing a bite together at Craig's in Los Angeles. On the same day, her estranged dad was in New York City and nearly risked an awkward run-in with Jolie in Manhattan amid his loved-up PR tour with his girlfriend Ines de Ramon. Cooper is an actor studying at Morehouse College in Atlanta and lives in Los Angeles, according to his Instagram bio. On the same day as their Disney date, he also took to social media to share a series of snaps of him and his girlfriend posing in fun group photos alongside his family. Zahara is one of Jolie and Pitt's six children. The exes, who fell in love after starring in Mr. and Mrs. Smith together in 2005, also share Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Shiloh, 19, and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. Jolie and Pitt were together for about a decade before they tied the knot in 2014 but filed for divorce two years later in 2016. Jolie cited irreconcilable differences and later accused Pitt of abusing both her as well as their children, which he has denied. Their lengthy, contentious divorce battle was finalized eight years later in late 2024 and since then, many of their kids have dropped Pitt's surname amid their ongoing estrangement. Shiloh also now goes by Shiloh Nouvel Jolie as she filed paperwork to legally remove her estranged dad's surname from her own when she turned 18 last summer. After Zahara stepped out with what appeared to be an engagement ring, Pitt was reportedly 'devastated.' He reportedly learned about the engagement rumors online, which was like a 'punch in the gut' since he hadn't heard anything about it from his daughter, an insider told journalist Rob Shuter. He made a shocking remark about his family after his bitter divorce with Jolie officially came to an end but his fractured relationship with their six children remains unresolved. After Zahara stepped out with what appeared to be an engagement ring, Pitt was reportedly 'devastated.' He reportedly learned about the engagement rumors online, which was like a 'punch in the gut' since he hadn't heard anything about it from his daughter; pictured November 2011 in Tokyo Pitt — who believes his relationship with two of his children is 'unfixable' — opened up about how important family is to him — amid his ongoing and escalating estrangement from his kids. Speaking at the F1 premiere in Mexico City, he said: 'No matter the mistake, you just learn from [it] and move on,' he told ET. 'It'll lead to the next success.' The Oscar winner continued, 'When you get to my age, you realize how important it is to surround yourself with the people you love, the people that love you back.' 'Friends, family, and that's it," he added. 'From there, we get to go make things. It's a pretty simple, I think, equation.' The interview comes after a source exclusively told how Pitt felt after Pax was pictured last month stumbling out of the Chateau Marmont, propped up by several friends. 'He has zero concern with what Pax does or doesn't do. [Pax's] actions reflect who he is,' the insider said. 'Brad honestly considers his relationship with Pax unfixable,' they added. The source went on to say that the actor doesn't appear to be planning any outreach to either of his adopted sons: 'Pax and Maddox have made it abundantly clear how they feel, and Brad has nothing to say about either of them.' As for his other children, the source said that Pitt 'holds out hope that the others will one day come around. Time heals wounds.' A source close to Jolie also hit back at her ex-husband at the time and said: 'Brad continues to play the victim. His fractured relationship with his children is a direct result of how he has treated them. 'He should stop blaming others. If he wants to rebuild a relationship with the kids, he should acknowledge his own actions and make amends.'
