Indian-origin Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis faces backlash for dressing as Goddess Kali: 'Deliberately chose to mock Hinduism'

Indian-origin Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis slammed for mocking Hinduism and Christianity in her latest album. Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis's Indian-origin was dragged as she received a massive backlash for her music video True Blue in which she dressed as Goddess Kali. Both Hindus and Christians slammed the music video as dressed as Goddess Kali, the singer provocatively posed with a Christian cross. Indian rapper Raftaar publicly condemned the video on Instagram, calling it a 'mockery of my religion' and urging fans to report it on YouTube. Tommy Genesis, also known as Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, was born in Canada to a Malayali-Tamil-Swedish family. Her father, Mohanraj, is a Tamil-Malayali Christian who emigrated from India to Canada when he was young. His parents, Tommy Genesis's grandparents, were a scientist and a nurse who moved to Canada in response to a newspaper ad seeking professionals in their fields. Tommy Genesis' mother is of Swedish descent. Tommy is known for her provocative, genre-defying music that explores themes of gender, identity, and sexuality, often describing herself as a 'fetish rapper.' She gained prominence in the underground rap scene, with Dazed magazine labeling her 'the internet's most rebellious underground rap queen' in 2016 "Tommy Genesis, from a Tamil-Malayali Christian background, mocks Hindu symbols in her 'True Blue' video for shock value. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Run Your Business Like a Pro - Top Trending Accounting Software (Check Now) Accounting ERP Click Here Undo This isn't art, it's cultural insult, plain and shameless," a social media comment said. "bro i'm not even a hindu or a christian but this was so uncomfortable to watch like it just feels so off. what's with the mindset of mocking other religions culture and beliefs for clout? the insane part is that tommy genesis is an indian plus the song and music is just AWFUL," another wrote. "Her character in the latest track TRUE BLUE is described as 'Freak Of India' on the posters as you can see on the top of the poster below. Her ancestors were priests. Her father is a converted Christian. So she is apparently angry on hindus for the way they treated her father and then she is also angry on christians as they did not allower her in the church because she is a queer. And she made this video mocking both the religion," one wrote.

Samay Raina's India's Got Latent Makes Comeback On YouTube After Ranveer Allahbadia Controversy

Samay Raina's India's Got Latent returns to YouTube months after controversy involving Ranveer Allahbadia. Fans hail it as the 'best comeback ever.' Four months after being embroiled in a major controversy, India's Got Latent — the YouTube talent show hosted by comedian Samay Raina — has quietly made a return, albeit on a different channel. The show was pulled down earlier this year after YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia faced widespread backlash for making an inappropriate comment to a contestant involving their parents. The controversial remark led to public outrage and legal repercussions, with multiple FIRs filed against Ranveer, Samay, Apoorva Mukhija, and Ashish Chanchlani. Following the incident, Samay Raina took down all episodes from his official channel and issued a public statement expressing his distress. 'Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India's Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time," he wrote. He also confirmed his full cooperation with authorities investigating the matter. Now, months later, the show's segments have reappeared online — not on the original channel but on a newly active page titled India's Got Latent Clips. The revived clips include content from public and members-only episodes, with over 500 videos currently available for viewing. Fans of the show have welcomed its digital return with open arms. Comments like '2025 is the year of comeback," 'Best comeback everrr," and 'Finallyyyyyyyy… comeback ho hi gaya Latent ka" have flooded the clips, suggesting that the core audience has remained loyal despite the controversy. Meanwhile, Samay Raina is currently touring internationally, performing across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. His tour, which began on June 5, will conclude in Sydney on July 20. Whether this quiet return marks a full revival for the show or merely serves as a nostalgic archive remains to be seen — but for now, India's Got Latent seems to be back in the algorithm. Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda booked under SC/ST Act for derogatory remarks against tribals

Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda has been booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Raidurgam police for allegedly making derogatory remarks against tribal communities during a public event. The case was booked following a complaint filed by Nenavath Ashok Kumar Naik, State President of the Joint Action Committee of Tribal Communities, citing the comments made by the actor on April 26, 2025, during the pre-release event of the film Retro. According to the First Information Report (FIR), seen by The Hindu, the actor allegedly referred to tribal people as lacking intelligence and common sense and likened them to Pakistani terrorists. 'He insulted their tribal community by saying that they had beaten them 500 years ago without any intelligence and minimum common sense. Moreover, he made comments comparing them to Pakistani terrorists,' the complainant said. Attaching the YouTube link in the written complaint, Mr. Naik stated that these comments were not only offensive but deeply insulting to the dignity and self-respect of the tribal community. He said that the content was shared across multiple media channels, including YouTube via Sithara Entertainment's channel, drawing widespread criticism. Investigation is under way.
