
Marching to his own beat
The first time we met was at a gathering of luminaries at a retreat in Goa intent on saving 'Democracy in India'. We did such things in those distant days of the 70s. Goa was still an unexplored destination. There were dancers, poets, historians, political activists, the odd freedom fighter, one of each. Manohar Malgoankar the novelist lived in Goa and was our unofficial host to discovering the state, in between the long sessions at the conference table.
Krishen Khanna, well known by then, was the artist. He was then as he still is now a handsome man; with a fresh pink complexion from his Lyallpur childhood in Pakistan, the thick swatch of hair falling over his forehead, a secret smile playing over his pursed lips.
When he finally spoke, we listened. 'Let us not forget,' he said 'the leela of this ancient place, let us not forget to live!' In that one moment we forgot who we were as individuals. We danced.
Khanna was the band-master of every world he entered. In much the same way that the red and gold brass buttoned Bandwallas in his paintings who emerged from his canvases in the 1980s played their trumpets through marriages, parades, political rallies and funerals. They marched to their own music.
They could be said to reflect the trajectory of his life. In his autobiography, The Time of My Life: Memories, Anecdotes, Tall Talk, of a childhood in Lyallpur, now Faisalabad in Pakistan, and then in pre-partition Lahore, followed by a very privileged schooling on a Rudyard Kipling scholarship at the Imperial Service College of England in 1940, Khanna describes how his father would eat a piece of fruit at the table. 'He would almost attack the fruit and examine it while chomping to see where strategically he needed to bite next. While his teeth sank into the fruit, some kind of a process of suction would be set in motion, simultaneously, so that not a drop of juice went astray…' In 1947, the family as with many others, left their home driving across the divide in a car. They found a second home in Shimla.
'I remember my interview with the top brass at Grindlays Bank,' Khanna says with the same mischievous smile. 'It was a formal dinner with full tableware and cutlery that also included a marrow spoon. When they served a marrow bone, I used the marrow spoon as I had done in my schooling days in England.' He got into Grindlays in 1948.
Khanna's Bombay chapter
By then he had met Renu Chatterji and married her subsequently. She belonged to an equally distinguished family. Her brother P.C. Chatterji is considered a doyen of Indian Broadcasting and has written several books on the subject.
When they moved to Bombay, the artist in Khanna began tugging at his tailored suits. His 1950 painting, News of Gandhiji's death, attracted the attention of Rudolf Von Leyden, the émigré art connoisseur from Europe. Von Leyden went to anoint the mixed cabal of artists that would put Bombay as it was known as the front runners of post-Independence Indian art.
As Khanna described Von Leyden's influence in a recent biography: 'He belonged to a generation of immortals… He never said as much but he was a votary of beauty and was not given over to tightly held theories, there was much open mindedness which made discussions [more] lively.'
Another immortal was Homi Bhabha, a great collector as well as being a scientist. As the head of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), he bought one of Khanna's paintings for ₹225 in the late 1940s. He created an extraordinarily prescient collection of art that decorated the walls of the TIFR. He had started a trend for corporate collectors to discover and create a renaissance of Indian art in all its varied manifestation.
'He never stopped being an artist'
In the early 1950s the Khannas came to Chennai where their daughter Rasika was learning Bharatanatyam, and met S. Krishnan, a cultural advisor to the USIS (U.S. Consulate General). Khanna's first solo show was at the USIS in 1955. Subsequently, he was to paint a great mural on the maritime glory of the Cholas for the newly built ITC Chola Hotel. The same mural now gilds the walls of the ITC Grand Chola.
Long before that Khanna's connection with the ITC Welcomgroup Hotels was fulfilled with the wonderful series of paintings that decorate the foyer of the Grand Maurya Hotel in New Delhi. Called The Great Procession, each panel tells the story in glowing colours of the daily lives of people in our world. It combines the tales from the Jataka of birds and animals as elegantly as those that appear in our miniature tradition, on street corners and albums.
When I met the Khannas again many years later, it was at one of the ITC hotels' travelling 'Art Camps' organised by Monisha Mukundan, the editor of Namaste magazine at the time. She had the gift of creating a vivid collage of artists from different affiliations with other crafts people and writers. It was a moveable camp from New Delhi, to Agra, to Jaipur in stages. Khanna may have been the doyen of the group but he never stopped being an artist who sat at his scroll of paper with his pastels and Conte crayons drawing with all the vigour of a four-year-old.
When Renu and I stopped to bargain for a necklet of beaten silver being sold outside at a market, Khanna laughed and said: 'How typical, you ladies want your freedom but are everywhere looking to be locked in chains!'
We still bought the silver chain.

What is the PM Modi quote in ‘Sitaare Zameen Par'?
Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par arrived in cinemas on June 20, but not without a set of last-minute, government-mandated changes — chief among them, has been the inclusion of a quote by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the opening credits. Cleared for release by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on June 17, the film faced a delay in certification until producers complied with five specific edits. The most prominent directive was to feature the Prime Minister's message as part of the film's opening disclaimer. The quote reads: 'In 2047, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Independence, our divyang friends will be seen as an inspiration to the whole world. Today, we have to be determined towards achieving this goal. Let us all build a society where no dream or goal is impossible, only then we will be able to build a truly inclusive and developed India.' The terminology itself has sparked debate. The term 'divyang,' coined by Modi in 2015 to refer to persons with disabilities, has been widely criticised by disability rights groups, who have argued that it glosses over real struggles with euphemism and strips away all complexity. Despite sustained opposition and formal petitions to government bodies, the term remains in official use. Beyond the quote, the CBFC ordered several other changes. A visual and subtitle containing the word 'kamal' (lotus) — also the symbol of the ruling party — was removed. 'Business woman' was changed to 'business person,' and a 30-second disclaimer at the start was shortened to a 26-second voiceover. The word 'Michael Jackson' in subtitles was swapped with 'Lovebirds.' The revisions were recommended by a CBFC revising committee led by theatre director Waman Kendre, after the examining committee reviewed the initial cut. Neither CBFC chairperson Rajendra Singh nor Kendre commented on the rationale behind the directives. The unusual nature of these changes, especially the inclusion of a political quote, has drawn criticism. Critics argue that inserting political messaging into cinema, particularly under certification pressure, sets a worrying precedent for creative freedom. Sitaare Zameen Par is the official Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish film Champions, and is presented as a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan's 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. Directed by RS Prasanna, the film follows a basketball assistant coach (played by Khan) sentenced to community service, who finds himself coaching a team of neurodivergent basketball players adults. The film also stars Genelia Deshmukh.

From shots to chai shots: Rave culture gets a clean makeover
Is 8 am the new 2 am? In the national capital, the answer is yes. Rave parties for millennials and boomers have long been associated with pulsing lights, midnight crowds and the hush-hush presence of alcohol or drugs. But now, a cultural flip is underway, taking the sober movement even further. In Delhi and Mumbai and beyond, a new kind of rave is taking over: chai rave , coffee rave , matcha rave, run rave . No intoxicants, no hangovers—just endorphins, caffeine, community and a steady stream of beats. In Delhi, young professionals lace up their sneakers at 6.45 am for a 5-km jog. On June 15, the Delhi Run Collective hosted its second run rave at the Arun Jaitley Park near Siri Fort. 'People may arrive sleepy, but that changes the moment we begin,' says Bhavya Choudhary, an engineer at an oil and gas firm, who took part in the run. 'By 8 am, there was music, dancing, laughter—it felt less like a fitness event and more like a celebration of movement and community.' Manraj Singh, cofounder of Delhi Run Collective, says, 'Post-Covid, people started valuing cardiovascular health and community in ways they didn't before. You don't need alcohol. A run, music and good company can create the same high— if not better.' Run raves begin early in the morning in a park, followed by team activities like tug-ofwar and finally a cool-down at a cafe—with tea, coffee or smoothie, along with DJ and dancing. 'It's the kind of party where you make real connections. You wake up early, push yourself, dance hard and go home by 10 am, feeling amazing,' says Singh. 'It's a new ritual.' If you thought a chai party couldn't be cool, beauty and wellness brand inde wild would disagree. It had a chai rave, featuring 'Kulhad, Corset and Kundan', for the launch of a lip tint product in masala chai flavour. Says Diipa Büller-Khosla, founder of inde wild: 'The chai rave was a love letter to dual identities. It was about wearing a corset and kundan, drinking masala chai in a kulhad and dancing under a disco ball.' Why chai? 'It's bold, layered and unapologetically complex, just like the women who drink it. We didn't pair chai with rave culture to modernise it, but to celebrate it in a new context. Why not let it live at the heart of a rave?' she says. This is a clean and cost-effective branding exercise. It's also a sign of how Gen Z and young millennials are reclaiming cultural rituals and giving them a new twist. The cafe chain Chaayos , too, held a chai rave in Greater Noida recently. Vaibhav Bhatia, a Delhi-based food vlogger, who attended it, says, 'It had EDM and desi chai—what more do you want? You get the same buzz without the crash. It's clean, social and enjoyable.' It isn't just chai. Starbucks Reserve hosted a coffee rave in Mumbai in May, followed by Araku Coffee's party on June 13. Raashi Mishra, a 24-year-old marketing professional, who attended both events, says, 'The vibe was fun, there was lots of dancing, and most of the crowd was Gen Z. We are seeing more people choosing not to drink. But sober doesn't mean boring anymore.' For brands like Starbucks, it's a bridge to a younger crowd. DJ Aaryan Gala, who played at the coffee rave, says: 'They wanted to draw in Gen Z and introduce new coffees. This was the best way—good beats, good brews. We had kids and pets grooving with us.' Mokai, a cafe in Mumbai, held a coffee and matcha rave. 'The inspiration came from a London space that mixed music with matcha and sugar-free coffee,' says Karreena Bulchandani, founder of Mokai. 'We loved the vibe and added our own signature twists.' What started as a low-key experiment in September last year now has turmeric and ginger shots, matcha lattes and Arab-inspired DJ beats. 'People love trying something fresh and Insta-worthy. But this isn't designed to be a weekly ritual; it is just a feel-good moment worth experiencing,' she adds. NO-TOX PARTY The definition of a rave is being rewritten— its time, space and liquid companion have changed. 'People used to party till 2 am. Now they are partying at 8 am. They are building rituals that feel good, look good and are actually good for one's health,' says Singh of Delhi Run Collective. 'It's a cultural detox .' What ties all these raves together? Music. For Aaryan Gala, who has spun decks across global nightclubs for over 17 years, the shift to caffeine-led raves is anything but conventional. 'Coffee raves are held in cafés, without alcohol or any vices. People are high on caffeine and music only,' he says. Instead of high-octane drops, the mood is groovy and grounded. 'We tailor the vibe to the space—mostly Afro House, Deep House and a touch of Bollytech. It's less about the drop and more about the flow.' He is optimistic about where this is headed. 'With over 20 lakh cafés in India, we are just scratching the surface. This concept will blow up—we are not even prepared for it.' At a recent techno festival in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, ravers made sun salutations under strobes. This was a yoga rave, curated by Art of Living teachers Isha Sharma and Divam Kapoor, and Sarvagya Moondra of the music festival Eden of Sounds. 'We chase a pranic high, not a chemical one,' says Sharma. With breathwork drops, bass-backed Om chants and a crowd that leaves sweaty yet serene, raves like this are redefining what it means to party, says Kapoor. Globally, too, the concept of the rave is being reinvented. At the padel club raves in Europe, for instance. high-energy dance meets sport culture. The new raves are all about cardio over cocktails, caffeine over chaos and joy minus the judgment.

Fatima Sana Shaikh on casting couch and Me Too in Bollywood: 'It's not like the industry is bad, but lines do get blurred when you have become intimate'
Fatima Sana Shaikh, who is known for her roles in Dangal, Ludo, Thugs of Hindostan and Sam Bahadur, has once again spoken out about the prevalence of sexual misconduct and the casting couch in the entertainment industry. The actress recently shared her views on how things have evolved in the post-Me Too era, and how much further there still is to go. 'There's more accountability now' When asked about being one of the few in Bollywood to address the issue openly, Fatima acknowledged that the landscape has changed. 'I think things have changed. People are much more accountable. They are a little more fearful,' she said in an interview with Humans of Bombay. She noted that most film sets today have designated personnel or units in place to address sexual misconduct complaints before they escalate to police cases. She also pointed out that conversations around these issues are now taken more seriously. 'There is a conversation. There is an investigation... it exists in every industry,' Fatima added. While advocating for thorough investigation before passing judgment, she also maintained that the benefit of the doubt is often, and rightly, given to women. 'Because it is a male-dominant industry. 'I haven't faced this in Bollywood' Clarifying her own experience, Fatima stated that while she has spoken of uncomfortable situations in the past, particularly in her younger years, she has never directly faced sexual misconduct within the Bollywood ecosystem. 'It's not like the industry is bad. Any incident that has happened, it's just been this one little, small-time somebody and some conversation,' she said. She was quick to emphasize that issues like these are not exclusive to film sets. In fact, she pointed out that the problem is equally, if not more, severe in the corporate world. 'Corporate is life when you are together. So there, it's even more rampant... and even more toxic,' she said. 'Somebody will come from this agency… you will have a meeting with the cast, crew, and all the HODs. You will be told what your rights are, what is appropriate, what is not,' she explained. She added that most reputed production houses now conduct these sessions as standard practice, a move that she believes is a positive step toward safer work environments. 'People are being held accountable for their actions — not only in our industry, but in corporate and beyond. And that is what progress looks like,' she concluded.
