Iraq to become "a Massive Success Story"
By Padraig O'Hannelly.
Iraq is experiencing unprecedented stability and security, creating significant opportunities for international businesses, according to Abir Burhan, Company Director of Al-Burhan Group (ABG), speaking at the Iraq Britain Business Council (IBBC) Spring Conference in London.
Burhan outlined how the operating environment has transformed dramatically over the past year, with the Iraqi government actively inviting international investment and reducing hostility towards foreign businesses. " We've been through the worst of it, and we finally see that Iraq is becoming really stable and secure, " he told delegates.
ABG has positioned itself as a facilitator for international companies entering the Iraqi market, partnering with established firms including Menzies Aviation and Air BP to operate ground fuelling services at Iraqi airports. The company has achieved international operational standards with no reported incidents, demonstrating the viability of high-quality service delivery in the country.
" We allow companies to operate in a safe environment, to actually do their job, rather than worrying about the hurdles of dealing with the Iraqi infrastructure, " Burhan explained.
The group has made substantial investments in Iraq's infrastructure over the past two years, including: A 300-room hotel development near Baghdad airport
Construction of 1,200 affordable housing units in Wasit province
Establishment of an operations centre to support international business activities
Burhan noted that ABG's security division has experienced reduced demand over the past year, which he views as a positive indicator of improving conditions. " We don't mind our security company not being busy, because we know that there are big advantages for businesses as well, " he said.
The Operations Director expressed optimism about Iraq's economic prospects, predicting the country will become " a massive success story " within the next five to ten years. He emphasised the current government's commitment to attracting international investment and the noticeable improvement in security conditions.
Burhan acknowledged the pivotal role of the Iraq Britain Business Council in facilitating international business opportunities in Iraq over the past decade, describing their work as instrumental in bringing projects to fruition despite various challenges.
The comments reflect growing confidence in Iraq's business environment as the country continues to rebuild and modernise its economy following years of instability.

US Embassy warning sparks fears of major security shift in Iraq
Shafaq News/ A senior Iraqi lawmaker warned on Friday that a potential closure of the US Embassy in Baghdad could be a 'precursor to an unprecedented security event' in Iraq or the wider region. Mohammed al-Shammari, a member of the Iraqi Parliament's Security and Defense Committee, told Shafaq News that 'the possible shutdown of the American Embassy is a serious indicator that the United States and Israel may be preparing for a dangerous operation, warranting the evacuation of diplomatic personnel.' 'This is an early warning signal that demands urgent political and security preparedness inside Iraq,' al-Shammari added. He pointed to Iraq's limited sovereignty, particularly in defense and financial matters, blaming US control over Iraqi oil revenues for hampering military development. 'If Iraq held its financial sovereignty, weapons, salaries, and pensions would be fully national,' he said, noting that the US Federal Reserve can block arms deals that don't align with Washington's preferences. Al-Shammari stressed that sovereignty is not merely territorial, but also financial, warning that the Iraqi military's weaknesses are rooted in dependence on foreign-controlled funds. Regarding the future of US forces in Iraq, he confirmed there is a binding agreement for full withdrawal by 2026, with a mutually agreed timeline currently in place. Earlier on Friday, the US Embassy in Baghdad issued a statement denying any operational changes at its Baghdad embassy or the consulate in Erbil. 'The United States remains firmly committed to advancing its policy priorities in Iraq, supporting Iraqi sovereignty, and engaging with Iraqi leaders and citizens,' the statement said. However, the embassy had issued a security alert last week warning American citizens of increased risks of violence or attacks on US interests. It advised Americans in Iraq to avoid crowded areas and locations frequented by foreigners. The State Department continues to classify Iraq as a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' destination. Last Sunday, Iraq's Kataib Hezbollah threatened to strike US bases and interests in the region if Washington intervenes militarily in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel.

Iraq says oil exports unaffected despite Iran-Israel conflict
Baghdad ( – Iraq has confirmed that its crude oil exports continue without disruption, even as military tensions escalate between Israel and neighboring Iran. Shada Al-Azzawi, a member of Iraq's Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, stated that export operations through the Strait of Hormuz remain stable, with no signs of interruption due to the regional conflict. The Iraqi Ministry of Oil reported that in May, the country's oil production slightly exceeded 4 million barrels per day (bpd), with approximately 3.3 million bpd exported—mainly to China and India, Iraq's largest buyers. Despite concerns that the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial water entrance for global oil supplies, may become a flashpoint if Iran chooses to retaliate or limit access in retaliation to Israeli bombings, Iraqi officials have stated that oil flows remain stable. As OPEC's second-largest oil producer, Iraq depends heavily on Hormuz for transporting the bulk of its crude exports. Any disruption to this route could have serious implications for both Iraq's economy and global energy markets.

UGT Renewables plans 3,000-megawatt solar energy project in Iraq
Baghdad ( – In a move to support Iraq's efforts to diversify its energy sources, UGT Renewables, a well-known supplier of renewable energy solutions, plans to establish a large solar energy project in Iraq with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, met on Wednesday with the British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq, and other officials to discuss the details of the memorandum of understanding the Iraqi government signed last month with US-based UGT Renewables to build a 3,000-megawatt solar power plant in Iraq, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Electricity Ministry. The project includes the construction of energy storage systems with capacities of up to 500 megawatts, as well as 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines to improve the efficiency and stability of Iraq's electricity grid. Fadel clarified that the ministry aims to produce 12,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2030, in addition to developing different renewable energy projects that will help achieve sustainable development and environmental preservation. The officials who attended the meeting underlined their desire to expand their collaboration with Iraq, reaffirming their commitment to transferring experience and modern technologies while also contributing to the Iraqi electrical sector's long-term growth. In light of the country's growing need for power, the Iraqi government is taking measures to diversify its energy sources and attain sustainability in the energy industry. In 2023, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity sought to sign contracts with big businesses, such as France-based TotalEnergies, to build a 1,000-megawatt power plant in Basra, and China-based PetroChina to develop another power plant in Muthanna with a capacity of 750 megawatts. The Iraqi cabinet has approved a plan to assign projects to specialized companies for the generation of 7,500 megawatts of solar energy by 2030. These initiatives are part of a broader national strategy that aims to produce a total of 12,000 megawatts of solar energy.
