Traditional Wisdom: A Legacy of Environmental Stewardship
India's rich cultural heritage offers profound insights into sustainable living. India's eco-friendly traditions include using leaf plates (patravali), clay pots for cooking and storing water, and cow dung as natural fuel and disinfectant. Sacred groves (devrai) preserve biodiversity, while festivals like Makar Sankranti use biodegradable kites. These age-old practices reflect a deep respect for nature and sustainable living. Traditional homes are built with mud and bamboo, naturally regulating temperature. These customs showcase sustainable living, long before modern environmentalism emerged.
India's rich tapestry of environmental activism is woven with stories of communities and individuals who have stood resilient in the face of ecological challenges.
In 1730, in the village of Khejarli, Rajasthan, 363 Bishnoi villagers laid down their lives to protect a grove of Khejri trees from being felled by the Maharaja's men. This selfless act, led by Amrita Devi, became a symbol of unwavering commitment to environmental conservation.
In the 1970s, the Chipko movement emerged in Uttarakhand as villagers, led by women like Gaura Devi, embraced trees to prevent their felling. The movement's slogan, 'Ecology is permanent economy,' coined by Sunderlal Bahuguna, resonated globally. A 5,000-kilometer trans-Himalaya march by Bahuguna further galvanized support, leading to a 15-year ban on tree felling in the region.
In 1979, 16-year-old Jadav Payeng began planting bamboo on a barren sandbar in the Brahmaputra River. Across the globe, various cultures have intertwined spirituality with environmental consciousness. In Taoism, concepts like 'wu wei' (non-action) and animism promote living in balance with nature.
These diverse traditions collectively underscore a universal truth: sustainable living is deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual values.
Despite these rich traditions, the modern world grapples with environmental degradation. Despite these rich traditions, the modern world faces serious environmental problems. For example, India generates over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, and only about 60% of it is recycled. Cities like Delhi and Mumbai struggle with air pollution—Delhi often ranks among the world's most polluted cities. Water bodies like the Yamuna River remain heavily polluted due to industrial waste and untreated sewage. According to the World Bank, India is among the top 5 countries most affected by climate change. These issues show that despite our heritage, urgent action is needed to protect the environment today.
Advancements in technology offer promising solutions to environmental issues. In the realm of transportation, electric vehicles (EVs) are at the forefront of reducing carbon footprints. Smart technologies, such as AI-based predictive maintenance and IoT-enabled charging infrastructure, enhance the efficiency and sustainability of EVs, making them a viable alternative to traditional vehicles . Globally, innovations like hybrid wind-solar systems and offshore floating wind turbines are revolutionizing renewable energy generation. These technologies maximize energy production while minimizing space usage, crucial for urban environments . India, too, is making strides in renewable energy. As of October 2024, the country's cumulative renewable energy capacity reached 203.18 GW, marking a 13.5% increase from the previous year. With a target of 500 GW by 2030, India is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable energy .
Innovations tackling plastic pollution include biodegradable plastics made from seaweed or corn starch, plastic-eating enzymes like PETase, and upcycling waste into products. Technologies such as ocean-cleanup devices, waste-to-fuel plants, and digital recycling platforms like Recykal are transforming plastic waste management and promoting a more sustainable, cleaner environment. Several Indian startups are leading the fight against plastic pollution. Zerocircle, creates biodegradable packaging from seaweed that dissolves in soil or water. EcoKaari upcycles plastic waste into handmade bags and accessories using traditional looms, blending sustainability with livelihood creation. In Kerala, the DROP project by Munambam fishers has recovered over 22,000 kg of ocean plastic by collecting waste caught in fishing nets. Additionally, Bioyug On Wheels promotes biopolymer use through India's first mobile awareness campaign. These innovations show how creativity and community can offer real solutions to the plastic crisis.

World Environment Day serves as a reminder that environmental conservation is not a modern concern but a timeless value. By integrating traditional wisdom with contemporary technology, we can forge a path toward a sustainable future. As Mahatma Gandhi aptly stated, 'Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed'. Let this principle guide our actions as we strive to protect and preserve our planet for generations to come.

BHUBANESWAR: Access to school education and learning outcome of students in government schools of Odisha have improved significantly in the last two years. The Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 report of the Ministry of Education for 2022-23 and 2023-24, which was released on Wednesday has ranked Odisha among the top-5 performing states in school education. The PGI is an assessment of school education in 10 domains including access, learning outcome and quality, infrastructure and facilities, equity, governance processes, teacher education and training. The states and UTs were scored out of 1,000 points and classified into 10 grades from Daksh (top), Prachesta (mid-level) to Akanshi-3 (lowest). While no state/UT figured in the higher score ranges of 700 to 1,000 except Chandigarh, 10 others including Odisha scored in the 581-640 range (31 pc to 40 pc), achieving Prachesta-3 grade. While the state in the 2022-23 academic session had scored 584.5 points out of 1,000, this score improved by 11 points to 595.6 in 2023-24. It is the top-5 state as far as the overall score of 2023-24 session is concerned. The state has also been able to improve enrolment, retention of students, transition of students to next grade, identification and mainstreaming of out-of-school children etc., which come under the access domain. In fact, Bihar, Telangana and Odisha are the top-3 states to do so. In 2022-23, the state had scored 59.2 in the access domain which rose to 65.6 in 2023-24. In the district-specific assessment PGI-D, the districts were evaluated for 600 points across six categories of learning outcomes, effective classroom transaction, infrastructure facilities & student entitlements, school safety & child protection, digital learning and governance process. In Odisha, Jharsuguda continued to score the highest points in both the academic sessions, while Rayagada was the lowest performer. However, what has come as a matter of concern is the digital literacy of students in government schools. None of the districts except Jharsuguda, Khurda, Sambalpur and Sonepur scored more than 20 points out of 50.

A majority of students appearing in Class 10 and 12 board exams preferred Hindi as a medium of instruction, followed by English, an analysis conducted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) pointed out. As compared to Hindi and English, students opting for 16 regional languages as medium of instruction — Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Assamese, Punjabi, Malayalam, Bodo, Sanskrit, Nepali, Santhali and Manipuri — ranged in single digits from 0.9% to 6.1%. Also Read | Following outrage, CBSE reinstates Kannada, others, on list of regional languages in draft policy The analysis includes a total of 1,85,26,013 students who appeared for Class 10, and 1,49,24,580 students who appeared for Class 12 board exams in 2024. While on average 88% of all Class 10 students who appeared for the board exams passed, for medium of instructions like Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu and Assamese, the pass percentage of students is lower than the national average, officials point out. 'Only 82.7% students who appeared for Class 10 exams in Gujarati passed, while only 75.4% of those who appeared in Kannada passed. Both in Telugu and Assamese, 79.8% of students who appeared passed. This is lower than the national pass percentage of 88%,' a senior MoE official said. Meanwhile, the pass percentage for students studying in the Malayalam medium was 99.9%, much higher than the national average; so it was for Odia - 98%, and Manipuri and Punjabi - 96.2%. Similarly, officials have expressed concern about the low pass percentage of Class 12 students with Telugu as a medium of instruction. 'While 86.5% of 1,49,24,580 students who appeared for Class 12 passed, among these only 61.7% of 1,06,936 students who appeared from Telugu medium passed,' the senior MoE official said. Meanwhile, ranging between 90.5% to 92.3%, students studying in Tamil, Nepali, Punjabi and Manipuri had a much higher pass percentage than the national average of 86.5%, officials said. Interestingly, while the pass percentage of Gujarati medium students was lower than the national average for Class 10, it was at 92.6% for Class 12, which is higher than national average. Data analysed by MoE also suggested that a majority of students, an average of up to 39.3% belonging to government, government-aided aided and private schools, opted for Hindi as a medium of instruction when appearing for Class 10 and 12 board exams. While fewer students (31.4%) opted for English as a primary language for medium of instruction in Class 10, more students — 38.6% — picked English for Class 12. Many State Boards follow regional language as the medium of instruction till Class 10 and switch over to English in Class 12. 'For instance, if a student studies in Kannada medium till Class 10 and enrols in English in Class 12, s/he will have great difficulty in comprehending and adjusting to a new language. This also leads to a lower pass percentage in Class 12,' another senior MoE official explained. Officials said that in order to remove disparity between differences in pass percentage among various boards, there needed to be an emphasis on standardising assessment processes, curriculum, paper setting, and exam spans. 'These findings also create a strong case for curriculum and assessment equivalence across boards with different languages as a medium of instruction,' they said. The Ministry of Education was grappling with the issue of retaining around 26.6 lakh Class 10 students in the formal school education system, of which 4.43 lakh did not appear for exams, and another 22.17 lakh failed and thus were unable to progress to Class 11 in 2024. 'Class 10 failure is one of the causes for low retention rate and Gross Enrolment Ratio at higher secondary levels,' the senior official pointed out. Similarly, of the 24.76 lakh Class 12 students, 4.6 lakh not appearing for the exams, and another 20.16 lakh failing are a cause of concern for the MoE.

The Ministry of Education has recommended that seven states — Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal — transition to a common board system for Classes 10 and 12. This move comes after a detailed analysis by the Department of School Education flagged these states as accounting for nearly 66% of all student failures in board examinations last India has 66 school examination boards, comprising three at the national level and 63 at the state level (54 regular and 12 open boards). Data shows that while the top 33 boards cover 97% of students, the remaining 33 boards serve just 3%, raising concerns about their effectiveness and reach."Adopting a unified board structure for Classes 10 and 12 can greatly improve the schooling experience and outcomes. Lack of standardisation has led to inconsistencies in student performance," said School Education Secretary Sanjay FAILURE RATES SPARK CONCERN In 2024, over 22.17 lakh students failed the Class 10 exams, while 20.16 lakh failed Class 12. While these figures reflect an improvement from previous years, they remain a significant hurdle in ensuring smooth transition to higher education and reducing dropout analysis revealed that open school boards continue to struggle, with only 54% of Class 10 and 57% of Class 12 students passing. Officials stressed the need for the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to expand its reach, especially in states with high failure rates. Currently, NIOS has a stronger presence in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana — states that also have some of the lowest student failure rates."There is a need to standardise assessments, curriculum design, paper setting, promotion criteria, and exam schedules across all boards. Institutions like NIOS must enhance their outreach to ensure students remain within the education system, supported by initiatives like Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and active parental engagement," Kumar OUTPERFORM BOYS IN SCIENCE STREAMA positive trend noted in the report was the increasing success of girls in board exams, particularly in science.
