Properties of 18 accused to be auctioned in Vasai-based Jaimuni Cooperative Patpedhi Ltd's Rs 34-crore loan scam

Mumbai: The competent authority under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act will auction flats, plots, commercial units of 18 persons accused in a Rs 34-crore scam where Vasai-based Jaimuni Cooperative Patpedhi Ltd failed to return deposits collected from the public.
The money generated through auction will be used to repay the investors.
The scam involved fraudulent loan disbursal to purchase flats that were already mortgaged, with forged documents and collusion between bank officials and builders. Accordingly an FIR was filed at Arnala police station in Oct 2018 for cheating, criminal breach of trust and forgery. Later, the probe was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as the defrauded amount was around Rs 34 crore.
A senior EOW officer said the process of filing the FIR, arresting the accused, and investigating the case is complete and the properties of the accused have also been identified and are now officially with govt. Under Sections 4(1) and 5(1) of the MPID Act 1999, govt has the powers to seize and auction properties of the accused who have defrauded depositors.
Shekhar Ghadge, the sub-divisional officer who has been appointed as the competent authority by state govt, said: "Our first step is to approach the MPID court and further process these properties after which they will be ready for auction."
After the auction, the process of distribution of funds among investors shall begin, he added.
Satyawan Patil, former director of Jaimuni Cooperative Patpedhi Ltd, said: "This loan scam put depositors' hard-earned money at risk. The biggest loss caused by this scam is that it hampered the reputation of the credit society. I see that justice is being served and on behalf of my colleagues... I welcome this development. This will boost the trust of depositors in the law, which, in turn, is advantageous for the credit society's future.

HC rejects plea by IAS officer, kin seeking quashing of CBI probe into graft charge

1 2 Cuttack : The Orissa high court on Friday dismissed a writ petition filed by senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi, his wife and daughter seeking to quash a CBI investigation into alleged corruption. The court ruled that the petition was "premature and not maintainable", as the investigation was still at a nascent stage. The case stems from the arrest of a PSU executive on Dec 8 last year for allegedly accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe from a Bhubaneswar-based real estate firm. During interrogation, Sethi's name emerged, prompting a CBI search at his residence on Feb 18 this year. The petitioners alleged procedural violations and harassment, and sought the return of seized materials. Justice S K Panigrahi, however, rejected these claims, emphasising that the extraordinary writ jurisdiction under Article 226 of Constitution cannot be misused to derail legitimate investigations. "Higher the office, greater the responsibility," he observed, noting that Sethi, as a senior bureaucrat, is expected to uphold legal integrity, not evade scrutiny. The court stressed that no chargesheet had been filed yet, and interference at this point would undermine both investigative processes and public interest. It criticised the petitioners' approach as "forum-shopping" and warned against setting a precedent that powerful individuals can shield themselves from legal accountability. The court clarified that its refusal to intervene does not equate to a presumption of guilt, and the petitioners retain full rights to defend themselves during trial. However, it maintained that mere status or reputation cannot justify halting a probe into serious allegations of public corruption. On Feb 25, Justice Panigrahi had ordered, "As an interim measure, it is directed that no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioners till the next date." The interim restriction was extended from time to time and was in force till the petition was dismissed on Friday.

Mandya MFI official abducts 2 minors to recover EMI

Mandya: There have been several incidents in the recent past when a section of microfinance institutions (MFIs) operating in Karnataka have been found guilty of adopting unethical loan-recovery methods, prompting the state govt to introduce stringent legal measures to regulate such firms and ensure protection of consumer rights. However, despite the legal safeguards, the menace reared its ugly head yet again as this latest incident in Mandya district reveals, where an executive from a microfinance firm allegedly abducted two minors on Monday over a loan instalment that was reportedly overdue by only a few days. Police said the accused kidnapped two cousins, a minor girl, 7, and a boy, 13, from their home in Chilkunda village while their parents were away, apparently to show him the way to the girl's mother's workplace, where he confronted her over the unpaid EMI. Though the children were later dropped back home by the accused, the minor girl's father filed an FIR on Friday, accusing the finance company and its executive of kidnapping the two children and insulting his wife. The complaint attracts provisions of a new law governing microfinance institutions in the state under the Karnataka Micro Loan and Small Loan (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025. Speaking in Bengaluru, home minister G Parameshwara assured that if there was any wrongdoing, strict action would be initiated against the offenders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Speel gratis in je browser – Geen download of installatie nodig! "When we asked the children, they said they were not abused, or threatened by the accused, who was warned and let off," Ravichandra added. Sources claimed the finance company official had taken the two children on his bike to the workplace of the girl's mother, who is employed in an incense stick rolling unit.

Institutional round applications for engg, mgmt via CET cell too

Mumbai: Aspirants seeking admission in the institutional round for engineering, management and pharmacy courses can now apply centrally through the state's CET cell too. Previously, candidates only had the option of approaching individual colleges directly and often faced the risk of being turned away on various pretexts. To bring in more transparency in admissions to institutional quota seats across technical courses, including diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate, the state govt has decided to step up precautionary measures. For instance, the govt has now removed the ambiguity in the definition of 'NRI', paving the way for only genuine candidates to secure seats under the quota. Additionally, the state's Fees Regulatory Authority (FRA) also fixed fees for institutional quota seats for the first time in technical colleges—private, unaided colleges can now charge up to five times the fees for merit seats from NRI students and three times from students taking admission in management seats. The govt issued a notification bringing in amendments in the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fees) Act, 2015 on Friday. One of the provisions in the notification stated, "In case a candidate is unable to submit the application directly to the concerned institute for any reason, the candidate shall have the opportunity to apply through the website of the CET cell till the date of allotment of final admission round. " These applications will be forwarded to the respective institutions after the allotment process of round four and will be considered for merit, it mentioned. Vinod Mohitkar, director, directorate of technical education, said the govt is not overstepping on the rights of management to conduct the institutional round. "We receive some complaints from students about certain institutions refusing applications for the institutional round. We are, therefore, only offering students an additional platform to apply. These applications will be compiled and sent to respective institutions and they will include these names, while preparing their merit list," said the director. Some of the admission rules were also modified in the notification, but were announced before. The state's cabinet, in a meeting this week, also announced aspirants seeking admission under the NRI quota for any courses will have to submit a certificate from respective consulate offices or documents mentioned in Guardians and Wards Act, 1890. A department official said even local students claimed admissions under NRI quota by submitting affidavits. Higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil had announced revision in admission process for more transparency.
