China's SMIC may have used older lithography gear to build Huawei's new 5nm chip

China's largest foundry, SMIC, is also the third-largest foundry in the world. Thanks to U.S. and Dutch sanctions, the foundry cannot obtain cutting-edge lithography machines. Without the ability to use extreme ultraviolet lithography machines (EUV) to transfer circuitry patterns to silicon wafers, SMIC was believed to be limited to producing chips using its 7nm node. We are now in the middle of an interesting mystery.
Huawei's new Mate Book Pro laptop runs HarmonyOS and is powered by the Kirin X90 chip designed by Huawei's HiSilicon chip design unit. One leaker says that the X90 is a repurposed Kirin 9010 with a different layout of the CPU cores. We should know for sure sometime over the next few days when in-depth reviews of the chip are expected to be released. The Kirin 9010 AP was used to power Huawei's photography-based Pura 70 flagship series that was released in April 2024 and it was built using SMIC's 7nm N+2 process node.
Did SMIC really build a 5nm chip using DUV? | Image credit-X A tweet on "X" from leaker @Jukanlosreve credited Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV with running the report about the 5nm node for the X90. Another X user, @zephyr_z9, claims that the Kirin X90 has a transistor density of 125 million transistors per mm2. That makes it less dense than TSMC's 5nm node (approximately 138 million transistors per mm2) but close to the density used with Samsung Foundry's 5nm node. What makes this amazing is that it appears to have been achieved using a DUV machine.
Not all of the numbers were positive. One analyst reportedly discovered that SMIC is producing 3,000 wafers per month with an extremely low 20% yield. Most foundries want to see a minimum yield of 70% before starting mass production of a chip.
Despite the anemic yield, if SMIC is able to produce 5nm chips using DUV, this will worry U.S. lawmakers who have been concerned about Huawei's ability to design cutting-edge silicon for the Chinese military and AI even with U.S. sanctions.

Huawei has not detailed plans for a global rollout of the new Pura 80 series, but given that the Pura 70 models are available in places like Europe, Indonesia and others, it's hard to imagine that the new generation will be available only in China. So, assuming the Pura 80 phones are available near you soon, would you buy one – and which one? Huawei Pura 80 • Huawei Pura 80 Pro • Huawei Pura 80 Pro+ • Huawei Pura 80 Ultra Starting with the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, that has a crazy complicated camera system that moves the same 50MP 1/1.28' sensor between two lenses – 3.7x/83mm and 9.4x/212mm. The phone also has a 1'-type 50MP main sensor and a 40MP ultra-wide camera. The 6.8' LTPO display is backed by a 5,700mAh battery with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pura 80 Pro+ mainly differ in areas like memory and satellite connectivity. Both keep the 1'-type main camera from the Ultra, but settle for a single telephoto camera – a 48MP 4x/93mm module. The ultra-wide is still 40MP. The display and battery are the same as the Ultra too. The vanilla Huawei Pura 80 has a smaller 6.6' display, still an LTPO OLED, and a 5,600mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. The camera system is more basic, but still quite capable with a 50MP 1/1.3' main, 12MP 5x/125mm tele and 13MP ultra-wide. Note that the Pura 80 launch is still pending. Huawei is keeping chipset details under wraps, but we think it's the same chipset as on the Mate X6, at least at the top of the Pura 80 range. And these phones don't run Android but HarmonyOS. The global variants should get EMUI instead, though. Here are pricing details for the Huawei Pura 80 family, but keep in mind that the USD amounts are simple conversion and the real global price will likely be different. The A19 and A19 Pro application processors (APs) will be focusing on efficiency this year instead of performance. As a result, when compared to Apple's 2025 APs, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 for Galaxy will probably be able to outperform the chips earmarked for the iPhone 17 series. On China's Weibo social media platform, tipster Fixed Focus Digital says that Apple is focusing on making the iPhone 17 series the best when it comes to battery life and doesn't mind giving away the top of the performance leaderboard to the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 for Galaxy. Apple's goal for the A19 Pro AP, which will be produced using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process node (N3P), is to score single-core and multi-core scores on Geekbench of 4000+ and 10000+ respectively. As a measure of comparison, the A18 Pro, which powers the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, had Geekbench scores of 3539 (single-core) and 8772 (multi-core). While MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 (produced on TSMC's third-generation 3nm node) and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 both will be looking to blow away the A19 and A19 Pro with their performance numbers, Apple's application processors should deliver improved battery life for the iPhone 17 series. Thanks to its thin build, the device is expected to come to market with a puny battery with a capacity of 2800 mAh. The A19 and A19 Pro can handle more work than the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 over the same time period. That's because the new Apple APs have higher Instructions Per Cycle (IPC) scores than the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. This means that Apple's chipset will have more efficient CPU cores. A higher IPC means that the CPU can do more work per clock tick. Even if the A19 has a lower clock speed than the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, if it handles more instructions per cycle, it can do more work in a shorter period of time. Here's a shocker. Should Samsung Foundry get its yield on 2nm production up to 60% or higher, the 2nm Exynos 2600 AP could end up powering the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26 + in most markets. That could make those two models the first smartphones to be powered by a 2nm chipset. Recently, the iPhone has been the first to the marketplace with a 7nm AP (iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, A12 Bionic, September 2018), a 5nm AP (iPhone 12 series, A14 Bionic, October and November 2020), and a 3nm AP (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, A17 Pro, September 2024). Unless Samsung is unable to obtain enough 2nm chips for the Galaxy A26 and Galaxy A26+, the iPhone will not be the first smartphone to feature a cutting-edge 2nm chip. Huawei kicked off its Developer Conference today, and Executive Director Richard Yu took the stage to unveil HarmonyOS 6 - Huawei's next major launch of the in-house software. HarmonyOS 6 brings the usual design polish, tweaks, and improvements, but the OS' most important new feature is the new Intelligent Agent Framework. It aims to bring more human-like and natural interaction between you and HarmonyOS 6's new personal assistant - XiaoYi. The aim here is for the OS to intuitively understand what you want and respond depending on it, instead of relying on simple voice prompts. XiaoYi supports scanning your entire smartphone screen to give you results, similar to Circle to Search. On stage, Huawei showed off HarmonyOS 6's AI framework in action - you can talk to ChatExcel to handle your Excel needs, ask XiaoYi to help you with making apps for HarmonyOS 6, etc. A neat feature of HarmonyOS 6 is Touch and Share. It works between eligible PCs and smartphones (no word yet on which those are but they could be Huawei-exclusive) and allows you to send multiple files, or connect to a game with your friends by simply tapping the phone to the computer's screen. The HarmonyOS 6 Developer Beta Program is now live, and developers can sign up until June 30. Devs need to complete verification with Huawei's Developer Alliance to enroll.
