Geeta Samota
has become the first
CISF
personnel to scale Mt Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,849 metres. The feat is a culmination of her "seven summits" dream that took wing in 2019 with her becoming the first woman from a central armed police force to climb Mount Satopanth in Uttarakhand.
Having trained at ITBP's mountaineering training institute in Auli, Geeta went on to scale Mount Lobuche in Nepal the same year. Even Covid could not break her streak, as she went on to climb four more peaks over a span of six months and 27 days between 2021 and early 2022. These included Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 mtrs) in Australia, Mount Elbrus ((5,642 mtrs) in Russia, Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 mtrs) in Tanzania, and Mount Aconcagua (6,961 mtrs) in Argentina.

CHENNAI: On June 16, atop North America's Mount McKinley, N Muthamizh Selvi became the first person from Tamil Nadu to conquer the highest peaks on all seven continents. A native of Johilpatti village in Virudhunagar district, Muthamizh Selvi teaches Japanese in Chennai. Her great climb began in May 2023 when she became the first woman from Tamil Nadu to scale Mount Everest . And in just the next two years, she would complete the 'Seven Summits' challenge Europe's Mount Elbrus (July 2023) Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro (Sept 2023) South America's Mount Aconcagua (Feb 2024) Australia's Mount Kosciuszko (March 2024) Antartica's Mount Vinson (Dec 2024) and finally Mount McKinley. Called Denali by Native American people, meaning 'the tall one', it's where Muthamizh Selvi faced some of her biggest challenges. "I had to carry an 80kg bag with me. It would keep pushing me backwards," she told TOI. "And after reaching the summit, we had to sleep there, in the freezing cold, without a tent, for 16 hours straight because of heavy winds." And that, Muthamizh Selvi says, pushed her close to death. "I developed a splitting headache because of the winds. If I had bled, that would have been my end. It's a miracle I survived," she said. Muthamizh Selvi climbed the mountain with Shaikh Hassan Khan who works for the Kerala secretariat. "When we were caught in the storm, Shaikh contacted Kerala govt through his satellite phone, after which Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan alerted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We then found Indian Embassy staff waiting for us at the base camp with medical aid," Muthamizh Selvi said. "We had to walk for 18 hours to reach the base camp. " It took almost 2 crore for Muthamizh Selvi to scale the seven mountains. She was supported by state development authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). Hailing Muthamizh Selvi's achievement, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi posted on X: "It is an inspiration for crores of women in India to reach their peaks."

Final preparations reviewed for Kailash Mansarovar yatra
Pithoragarh: Pithoragarh district magistrate Vinod Kumar Goswami, on Friday, reviewed the final preparations for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra scheduled to resume on June 30 after a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) – the nodal agency for the yatra. To facilitate the journey, KMVN has arranged 13 buses, with two reserved as backup. The DM instructed the health department to establish base hospital facilities at Gunji and directed BRO to deploy earth movers at landslide-prone areas to ensure smooth vehicle movement, with road condition bulletins to be issued twice daily. He also instructed the establishment of a robust communication system for pilgrims and support staff. "The 23-day pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar will be conducted by road via Lipulekh pass. This year, only five batches – each comprising 50 pilgrims – will undertake the yatra. Pilgrims will also have the opportunity to visit Adi Kailash, Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple, and Jageswar Dham," said DM Goswami. Officials said the first batch will assemble in Delhi on June 30 to complete visa, fee, and medical formalities. The group will then proceed to Tanakpur on July 4, from where ITBP will escort them to Lipulekh. The last batch will depart on Aug 4, with the yatra concluding on Aug 26.

Around 8-hour delay of Goa-Pune SpiceJet flight hassles flyers
1 2 Pune: Around eight-hour delay of a SpiceJet flight from the Manohar International Airport in Goa to Pune on Thursday evening and lack of proper information from the airline's ground staffers left about 50 passengers booked on it hassled. Ishan Singh, travelling to Pune with his family, including his one-and-a-half-year-old child, said the flight (SG-1080) was slated to take off at 5.20pm and land in Pune at 6.25pm. The plane took off at 1.22am on Friday and reached Pune at 2.08am. A spokesperson of SpiceJet said, "The flight SG 1080, scheduled to operate from Goa to Pune, was delayed because of a technical issue encountered during its previous rotation. As a result, the subsequent Pune-Jaipur leg was also impacted. Passengers of both flights were informed well in advance about the revised departure times — six hours prior for the Goa-Pune sector and eight hours prior for the Pune-Jaipur sector — enabling them to plan their journey to the airport accordingly. Passengers were assisted throughout and served refreshments. SpiceJet regrets the inconvenience caused." Singh from Wakad had a different story to share. He requested the ground staff in Goa to provide them with some kind of accommodation at the airport because he was travelling with an infant. "The ground staff only told me that we could go and ask for lounge access," he said. "We had checked out of the hotel around 11.30am and reached the airport by 12noon. After arriving at the airport, we learned that the flight was rescheduled to 8.45pm. The airline might have sent messages to flyers, but I didn't receive any," Singh said. After a while, he learned that the flight was further delayed to 10.10pm. The ground staff said there were some technical problems with the aircraft and engineers had not given it a go-ahead. "Then we got another text message stating that the flight would take off at 11.10pm," Singh said. Many flyers travelling to Pune and Jaipur lost patience. "They questioned the ground staff on the issue and why they were not being served any refreshments or provided with accommodation. The answers from the ground staff were vague. Approximately 30% of the flyers cancelled their tickets and opted for a full refund. Then another message came that the flight would fly at 12.10am, triggering altercations between flyers and the ground staff. The CISF had to intervene. The plane finally took off from Goa at 1.22am," Singh said. The same aircraft was to fly from Pune to Jaipur at 7.30pm on Thursday. It flew out of the city at 3am on Friday and landed in Jaipur at 4.54am instead of 9.50pm on Thursday.
