Alert Days in effect as temperatures near triple digits

BWI-Marshall peaked at 90° on Saturday afternoon and we're forecasting even warmer temperatures for Sunday afternoon. Highs across the area reach the mid to upper 90s.
WJZ Alert days in place for dangerous heat
The combination of near triple digit heat and elevated humidity levels have prompted the WJZ First Alert Weather team to issue Alert Days for Sunday through Wednesday of this week. Maximum temperatures will peak close to 100° each of those days with Monday and Tuesday the most likely afternoons to surpass that mark. This could rival high temperature records at BWI.
Heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the United States. Please take the Alert Days seriously, especially if you will be outdoors in the next couple of days.
A heat advisory is in place west of Baltimore for Frederick, Washington, as well as parts of Allegany and Montgomery Counties today from noon to 8 pm for heat indices up to 105°.
With warmer air on the way early in the work week, additional heat alerts will be active across much of Maryland:
A heat advisory will go into effect for Talbot, Caroline, Kent and Queen Anne's counties starting 8 am on Monday through 8 pm Tuesday evening.
An extreme heat watch for the rest of the state will go into effect at 11 am Monday morning through 9 pm Monday evening. Feels like temperatures will approach 110° for these areas.
Regardless of whether or not your neighborhood is in an alert, the entire area will be extremely hot and humid.
A few ways to stay safe and healthy while working outside during extreme heat -
Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing
Take frequent breaks if you plan to be outdoors
Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty
Remember pets and the elderly in the heat
In preparation for the unusually hot weather, Baltimore City's Health Department is declaring its first 'Code Red Extreme' Heat Alert. The alert begins Sunday and runs through the middle of the week. A list of available cooling centers is listed on the city's website.
Sunday storms possible
Sunday afternoon may also see an isolated shower or storm develop as a system moves in from the north. If we do see wet weather, we have a low-end risk for a stronger storm, as well. A level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather is in place for much of the Baltimore area and the Maryland Eastern Shore. Damaging winds and larger hail would be the greatest threat if severe weather materializes anywhere in Maryland.
Heat eases later in the week
Temperatures eventually begin to slowly ease away from the century mark late in the upcoming week. This will also come with increased shower and storm chances thanks to a front expected to inch closer to the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line from the north. We're still forecasting highs in the low 90s Friday into the final weekend of June.

Denver metro area 10-week stormwater repair project begins: What drivers need to know
Starting Monday, drivers in part of the Denver metro area may notice some changes to their usual route as the city begins a major stormwater repair project. For the next 10 weeks, Federal Boulevard just south of Belleview Avenue in Littleton will be fully closed while crews work to replace aging infrastructure beneath the roadway. The project is part of a larger effort by the City of Littleton to modernize its stormwater system, which includes several key culvert replacements. A recent citywide survey revealed that many components of the system are nearing the end of their lifespan, and some date back to the 1970s. CBS David Gilbert with the City of Littleton says the repairs are essential to keeping Littleton's stormwater system functioning safely and efficiently. "This work is necessary to make sure we can remove stormwater and get it to where it needs to go," Gilbert explained. "We're replacing the old metal pipe with something far more durable, and we're doing it as quickly as possible." The project includes removing approximately 182 feet of deteriorating corrugated metal pipe and replacing it with 36-inch reinforced concrete pipe. Crews will also replace one concrete junction box, modify two others, and install more than 250 feet of cured-in-place pipe lining. Altogether, the project is expected to improve the longevity and reliability of the stormwater system for years to come. To complete the work, full excavation of the roadway is required, which means a complete closure of Federal Boulevard just south of Belleview Avenue. While the city does not anticipate major traffic impacts, since it's not one of Littleton's highest-traffic areas, detour routes will be clearly marked. Local access to nearby businesses like Partner Colorado Credit Union and Foushee SalonSpa will be maintained. "We know it's a hassle," Gilbert said. "But we appreciate everyone's patience. These repairs are key to keeping Littleton's infrastructure safe and strong for the future." Construction is set to begin June 23, 2025, and wrap up by late summer, depending on weather and work conditions.

Slightly cooler temperatures for the Denver metro area Sunday ahead of a cold front
Relief from the heat is on the way. A cold front arrives Sunday night into Monday, bringing temperatures down into the upper 70s and low 80s to start the work week. The drop in temperature may be the best way to start the work week! CBS Before the cold front arrives, however, temperatures will climb into the low 90s Sunday. Largest US Grid Issues Energy Emergency Alert for Monday Heat
PJM Interconnection, which serves about 20% of Americans in the mid-Atlantic to the Midwest, declared an energy emergency alert with power demand expected to climb to a 14—year high amid intense heat. This alert was issued in anticipation of tight conditions on the 13-state system as electricity demand is set to top 160 gigawatts on the afternoon of June 23, which would be the highest peak since July 2011, according to PJM. The Eastern US grid operator also called a 'maximum generation emergency' to shore up supplies.
