CSIR-IICT celebrates National Technology Day 2025 with ASTC annual convention
Hyderabad, May 11 (UNI) The CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), in collaboration with the Academy for Science, Technology and Communication (ASTC) and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Hyderabad Chapter, celebrated National Technology Day 2025 along with the ASTC Annual Convention at the CSIR-IICT campus on Sunday.
Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, he stated, 'This is the age of research, of technology, of finding ways to make the world a better place.'
He also lauded the efforts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in democratizing access to science and research, expressing hope that CSIR institutions will continue to deliver transformative contributions to society.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr D Srinivasa Reddy, Director of CSIR-IICT, highlighted the importance of scientific innovation in tackling global challenges.
He said, 'The theme this year is very meaningful. It reminds us that science and technology must help solve the problems we face today.'
He also showcased CSIR-IICT's key contributions, including compostable plastics, affordable sanitary pads, and AGR technology that converts organic waste into biogas.
Dr Vinay Kumar Nandicoori, Director of CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), emphasised the central role of technology in CSIR's mission. He discussed CCMB's pioneering work in rare disease diagnostics, wildlife forensics, DNA fingerprinting, and the development of a low-cost screening test for sickle cell anaemia priced under Rs 100.
Dr Prakash Kumar, Director of CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), noted that "the courage to think differently creates impact." He outlined NGRI's initiatives to build an earthquake-resilient society through mega-projects assessing and mitigating seismic hazards in the Himalayas, Ganga Plains, and other vulnerable areas.
Delivering the ASTC Foundation Lecture on 'Gut Microbiome – The Science & Application,' Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, underlined the critical role of the gut microbiome in modern medicine. He explained its profound influence on immunity, metabolism, mental health, and its potential in managing a wide range of disorders.
In the Presidential Address, Dr Ch Mohan Rao, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council–ASTC and NASI Hyderabad Chapter, gave an overview of the inception of National Science Day and highlighted the ongoing activities of NASI.
The event also featured the release of the latest issue of ASTC Communications, the felicitation of contributing authors, and the presentation of ASTC Awards in categories including Science Popularization, Excellence in Science and Technology, and Lifetime Achievement.
Dr D Srinivasa Reddy and Dr S Venkata Mohan, Director of NEERI and former Chief Scientist at CSIR-IICT, were honoured with the Excellence in Science and Technology Award.

ICMR's NIIH develops simple point of care test for haemophilia A, Von Willebrand Disease
A simple and affordable point-of-care test kit has been indigenously developed by the National Institute of Immunohaematology for early diagnosis of genetic bleeding disorders haemophilia A and Von Willebrand Disease . The test kit was invented by former scientist Dr Shrimati Shetty and former ICMR postdoctoral fellow from NIIH Dr. Priyanka Kasatkar. Live Events The World Federation for Haemophilia has shown interest in procuring these tests for deployment in countries where the disease is prevalent, Dr Manisha Madkaikar, director of NIIH, Mumbai and Centre for Research Management and Control of Haemoglobinopathies (CRHCM) in Nagpur under the ICMR, said. "For India, this new rapid, visual card testing device has made testing possible even at primary health centres bringing diagnosis closer to the people who need it most. By using these PoC kits at PHCs and other local health centres, India can find and treat these bleeding disorders early, improve patient outcomes, and cut healthcare costs dramatically. This is a major step toward improving care for one of the country's most neglected health issues", Dr Madkaikar said. The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) analysis team of ICMR and Department of Health Research (DHR) recommended that the PoC kits for haemophilia A and VWD are suitable for primary facility-based screening and suggested integration of the test into the national health programs at primary healthcare level. This is currently being implemented in different states, Dr Kulkarni said. "This kit could help detect over 83,000 undiagnosed cases", he said, adding, "It would save the health system about Rs 42 crore, which is three times cheaper than the current method". Haemophilia A and VWD are the two most common inherited bleeding disorders. People with these conditions often suffer from joint swelling, easy bruising, muscle bleeding, and in women, heavy menstrual bleeding or complications during childbirth. "India is estimated to have 1.5 lakh people with haemophilia, but only about 27,000 are officially diagnosed," Dr Patil said. "Incidence of haemophilia A is 1 in 5,000 male births. VWD is known to affect 1 per cent of general population," she said. "Haemophilia A is passed down in families through the X chromosome (X linked recessive disorder)", Dr Patil explained. "Boys are usually the ones who have the disease, because they have only one X chromosome. If that X has the faulty gene, they don't have a 'backup' and will show symptoms. Girls usually have two X chromosomes, so if one X has the faulty gene, the other X can often make up for it. These girls are called 'carriers'," he said. "The VWD is an autosomal disease. This means both males and females can get it equally. It is not linked to gender like haemophilia," Dr Patil added.

Tripura to send Rs 264 Cr for 30 new schools
Agartala, June 23 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday said that the state government has decided to set up 30 new schools with all modern facilities in different subdivisions, and an amount of Rs 264 crore has been allocated. Addressing a gathering of students at the felicitation event, Dr Saha said that besides skill-based education, the government has decided to stress digital education and the use of AI in innovative learning in the academic system to make the teaching-learning process more attractive and interactive. He said during examinations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted Pariksha Pe Charcha, where he emphasised how to remain stress-free during exams. In the same approach, the state government started interacting with students and sharing insights with them. "As a result, we have seen a significant reduction in stress levels. I don't think such initiatives are happening anywhere else in the world. Even though the Mann Ki Baat programme, PM connects with people. The work of PM Modi will be scripted in golden letters in history, and someday, research will also be conducted on it,' he underlined. Earlier, we relied solely on textbooks, but now smart classes are available. The youth of our state are brilliant and should not leave the country. As PM Modi says, those who know will run the country, and there is no limit to knowledge, CM opined. Rs 264 crore to be spent for more new 30 schools: Tripura CM Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 23 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Sunday that the state has already started adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in every sector and informed that 30 new schools will be set up with an expenditure of Rs 264 crore. While addressing a felicitation programme for secondary and HS passed students under Ramnagar Mandal, CM Saha said that during examinations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducts Pariksha Pe Charcha, where he emphasises how to remain stress-free during exams. 'The way he gives direction and speaks -- following the same approach, we also interact with students and share insights with them. As a result, we have seen a significant reduction in stress levels. I don't think such initiatives are happening anywhere else in the world. Even through the Mann Ki Baat programme, he connects with people. The work of PM Modi will be scripted in golden letters in history, and someday, research will also be conducted on it,' he said. CM Saha, who is also the education minister, said that AI has already been introduced to the state in this digital era. 'Students have to depend on themselves and keep learning. Through yoga, one can understand oneself. Especially if students practise yoga, it will be highly beneficial. We must engage in exercise so that our minds remain sharp. When PM Modi came, he began reviving ancient practices that were once well-known in India. I have seen many medical students working in the health sector doing exceptionally well, even attending the OT using AI. Earlier, we relied solely on textbooks, but now smart classes are available. The youth of our state are brilliant and should not leave the country. As PM Modi says -- those who have knowledge will run the country, and there is no limit to knowledge,' he said. Around 44 schools have received new buildings. 'In the 2024-25 financial year, infrastructure development in around 350 schools will be carried out with an expenditure of Rs 80 crore.
