Ontario, Toronto to build new electricity transmission line to power city's downtown
Toronto is getting a third electricity transmission line to help power the city's downtown and replace aging infrastructure.
The project will help support the city's growth and major transit expansions like the Ontario Line while making the city's electricity grid more reliable, said Stephen Lecce, minister of energy and mines, at a news conference Wednesday morning.
"Today is about planning ahead, about doing the hard work to make sure Toronto has the energy infrastructure needs, not just for today, but for decades to come," Lecce said.
Toronto's electricity demand is expected to roughly double by 2050, with the greatest need coming from the downtown core, the province said in a news release.
"That's not just because we're building new homes or the Ontario Line. It's because of the electrification of vehicles, of heating and industry," Lecce said.
"It's because this city is a magnet for towers and investment and economic growth."
3rd line needed to keep up with demand
Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has determined that the city will need a third transmission line in order to keep up with demand.
The city currently gets its electricity through two transmission supply paths: one from the west at Manby Transmission Station near Kipling Road and Dundas Street, and one from the east at Leaside Transformer Station near Overlea Boulevard and Millwood Road.
Those transmission lines will start to reach their capacity in the early 2030s, the news release says.
The IESO is expected to make its final recommendation to the government on where the third transmission line should be built by August, after which the Ontario government will determine when construction on the project could begin.
The transmission line could take between seven to 10 years to complete, Lecce said.
The IESO has identified three potential options for where the new transmission line could be built:
An overland route from Pickering to Leaside in Toronto.
An overland route from Pickering to the Port Lands in Toronto.
An underwater cable from Darlington or Pickering to the Port Lands in Toronto.

The Ottawa Fire Services say crews responded to the 2700 block of Cassels Street near Mud Lake at approximately 4:50 p.m. after a 911 caller reported to Gatineau firefighters that a boat had struck a rock shoal and was taking on water. There were three occupants aboard the vessel, Ottawa fire says. On arrival, crews found the boat had drifted through the rapids but was still afloat. A water rescue team was launched at the scene and everyone aboard was removed from the vessel by 5:06 p.m. Ottawa paramedics tell CTV News they were called to the incident but there were no reports of injuries.

Tim McLeod said that investigations remain ongoing and he expects police to announce more charges. So far, two arson charges have been laid by RCMP regarding the Ditch02 fire near Weyakwin which forced multiple evacuations. 'I know that there are many others that are being investigated, last I heard in the neighbourhood of 30 individuals are suspected of and being investigated for intentional arson and that is just an absolute shame when you think about the devastation that these fires cause,' McLeod said during an interview with CTV Morning Live Saskatchewan on Wednesday. While McLeod stated that '30 individuals' are suspected of arson in connection to wildfires in the province, SPSA President Marlo Pritchard clarified that '30 incidents' are under investigation. 'First of all, it's not 30 people. There's 30 incidents that are being investigated as intentional starts or arson investigations,' he explained, during Wednesday's wildfire update. 'There have been charges laid in at least two of those incidents by the RCMP, and I'm not aware of any other charges as of this time.' According to McLeod, it's the province's full belief that police investigations will lead to full prosecutions for people found to be responsible for intentionally starting wildfires. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has confirmed that 350 values have been lost in wildfires to date, with the number expected to exceed 500 following more investigations that includes assessing the community of Denare Beach later this week. Last week the SPSA said that many of the wildfires in Saskatchewan this year were set accidentally by humans, but that they believed at least 30 were intentionally set. So far in 2025 the province has seen 261 wildfires, well above the five-year average of 157. Currently there are 17 active wildfires, three are considered not contained. However, recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have allowed crews to take a more offensive approach to fighting wildfires and fire growth has been minimal for the better part of two weeks. All but five evacuations have ended in the province. According to the SPSA, Creighton, Denare Beach, East Trout Lake, Whelan Bay and priority individuals in Cumberland House remain evacuated. A provincial fire ban was also lifted this week as well as a ban on ATV and UTV vehicles. The province will provide an update regarding the current wildfire situation at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.
