Lord of the Pings on social media for sharply dividing selection call, Shardul Thakur, had this to say about playing in England

Indian Express2 days ago

He's the most holy debated selection on the Indian team, but Shardul Thakur got the nod ahead of Nitish Kumar Reddy for the first Test at Headingley. It might be the runs he scored in the intra-squad matches, or his prior experience in England, but Coach Gautam Gambhir chose the Mumbai seaming all-rounder ahead of a top spinner and a fellow utility batter all rounder in Reddy.
For the man himself, playing in England remains special.
Speaking to BCCI TV before the Test, Thakur had said that the team was keen to show England that India were there to 'put up a show.' A grand show.
'Now England team is also playing different type of cricket. So we would like to surprise them also and prove we are here to put up a show,' Thakur told the board channel.
He labelled playing in England his fondest memory. 'I think 2021 series where we won couple of games (was memorable). The first one also we could have won but unfortunately it rained on last day and we couldn't chase down the total.
But then we won at Lord's and at the Oval,' he recalled. 'Then we came back for the fifth Test next year and series was level. But that was one of the fondest memories for me. It's one of the best series I've been part of,' he said.
Former bowling coach Bharat Arun had seen merit in picking him before the toss up with Reddy, and mostly based on his bowling. 'I think if I'm not mistaken he's got about two or three fifties on the trot and he came up with very important breakthroughs whenever given the ball. He can move the ball and bowled in early 130s,' Arun told IANS via Sony. He had reckoned the decision would be made based on how they were bowling at that particular moment.
While social media considered him washed up after having had his moment in Australia, Arun had told IANS, 'Shardul has done very well for us in England on the last tour. He was very handy with the bat.'
Speaking to BCCI TV, he said, 'It's very exciting to play in this part of the world where you face different challenges. First one is of course weather. Sometimes cloudy, sometimes bright sunny. As a player you need to make adjustments to your game, whether batting or bowling.'
Speaking on the rest of the team, he had said, 'It's good to have that fresh energy in team. Few youngsters coming up. New talent is always exciting.'
For someone who's got results in England and Australia, including that 50 at Oval, Thakur, now 33, brings some experience to a young line-up, though his selection chopped it's fair share of brickbats. 'It's always great to win an away series, away from home. If we can achieve this feat, it would be massive for the entire nation,' he told BCCI TV.

ENG vs IND 1st Test: Pant plays the numbers game beautifully, has his own computer, says Ravi Shastri

Rishabh Pant 'plays the numbers game beautifully and has his own computer' whose working only he knows, feels former India head coach Ravi Shastri after the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter's audacious and entertaining show against England in the opening Test. Pant hit an audacious 134 off just 178 balls with the help of 12 fours and six sixes to entertain the Headingley crowd with his unorthodox batting on Day 2. The 'falling paddle', the post-century somersault, there was majesty and madness in equal measure in Pant's memorable knock. 'Outrageous. He (Pant) plays the numbers game beautifully, plays the way he wants. He will block for a bit and then shift gears,' Shastri said on Sky Sports. 'He has his own computer and only he knows how it works. That's his USP. That's what puts bowlers under pressure and makes him box office, a real entertainer and a match-winner,' said the former India all-rounder. 'That's why there was that celebration. Thanking the man upstairs for giving him the opportunity,' said Shastri. 'I think his recovery from that accident had a lot to do with the frame of his body and being mid-20s. When I saw him in hospital, it wasn't a pretty sight. Knee in a mess, scars all over the place, bruises all over the place.' Most batters would not have dared to play a big shot when on 99 but Pant is made of different stuff as he carted off-spinner Shoaib Bashir for a one-handed six over midwicket to bring up his ton. He's a character, this boy,' said former Surrey and Sussex batter Ian Ward while commentating for Sky Sports. Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar had uttered the words 'stupid, stupid, stupid' while on commentary when Pant fell to a failed scoop during the series defeat in Australia. But on Saturday, he could not help but say, 'Superb, superb, superb,' after the memorable knock in Leeds.

Ganguly admits it won't be easy for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play 2027 ODI World Cup

It won't be easy for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to remain fit and find a place in India's ODI World Cup squad in 2027, former captain Sourav Ganguly says. 'All of us must understand, just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in a lengthy interview at his residence. The next ODI World Cup is scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia and by the time the prestigious ICC event is played, Kohli will be 38 years old and Rohit will touch 40. Till then, India has 27 ODIs spread across nine bilateral series. That means Kohli and Rohit will hardly get 15 international games a year. 'It won't be easy, with 15 games a year,' Ganguly said. ALSO READ | Pant plays the numbers game beautifully, has his own computer, says Ravi Shastri With 25,000 runs and 83 international hundreds between them, both Kohli and Rohit have expressed their desire to play the 50-over global event after recently retiring from Test cricket. Ganguly, an exceptional ODI batter during his career, was asked if he had any word of advice for them. 'I have got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. They will take a call.' Ganguly acknowledged that finding a player of the caliber of Kohli won't be easy, though he is not worried about Indian cricket after the retirement of the two stalwarts. 'I was not concerned at all. Virat is a class player. Finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn't surprised.' ALSO READ | Longest intervals between appearances in Tests for India: Karun Nair enters Top 10 Talking about Yuvraj Singh, Ganguly said he was a special player who flourished in white-ball formats but did not get enough chances to touch his real potential in the traditional format. 'I remember seeing Yuvraj for the first tine in Nairobi and saw that he is special. What he went on to do for India after that in one-day cricket is unreal. He was 2007 World T20 player-of-the-series, 2011 World Cup player-of-the-series, runs, wickets, fielding—he was special. 'Unfortunately he did not get many opportunities in Test matches. He played about 30-odd Test matches, he got stuck between Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman, but a special player,' he said.
