"When they do a business analysis, Nintendo doesn't show up": Ex PlayStation boss says Sony's only real competition outside Japan is Xbox, even though they have "huge respect for what Nintendo does"

Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida says Sony really only views Xbox as its main competitor outside Japan, despite the company's immense respect for Nintendo's unique positioning in the industry.
In a real Avengers-style crossover moment, Yoshida sat down with former Nintendo employees Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang for the latest episode of their Kit & Krysta podcast (timestamp), and Yoshida was asked how the higher ups at Sony view Nintendo as a competitor. His answer was essentially, they don't, not outside Japan at least.
"Their perception of their competition is always Xbox," said Yoshida. "They see Microsoft as being their competition, because Xbox is very similar performance hardware. You know, high-end console, mature games. And Nintendo is very different. Family friendly, games for everyone. Not about technologies, more about having fun with friends and families ... So, inside Sony, even when they do a business analysis, Nintendo doesn't show up even."
Yoshida added that, at least during his time at Sony, PlayStation was happy to see Nintendo succeed because it meant more people were playing games, and that opened up the potential for PlayStation to take a cut of that market share.
"Nintendo is bringing a younger audience into gaming, and some of them when they grow up, might graduate into more mature systems like PlayStation or Xbox," said Yoshida. "Of course, they have huge respect for what Nintendo does in terms of how Nintendo should be doing in the industry. We all felt like it's great to have Nintendo to continue to be successful so that we can continue to grow the industry."
Yoshida also noted that Sony's perception of Xbox as its "primary competitor" applies to markets outside Japan, because, "In Japan, Nintendo is hugely strong and Xbox almost doesn't exist." Ellis and Yang both co-signed that statement, saying, "facts."
Of course, none of this is going to be hugely surprising to even casual observers, but it's really something else hearing it from a group of people with unique insights into the inner workings of both Sony and Nintendo, respectively.
With the Switch 2 specs not even rivaling the lightweight Xbox Series S on paper, and also by virtue of it being a handheld console, it doesn't look like Nintendo's aiming to shift its place in the market in this generation, which absolutely makes sense following the generational success of the OG Switch.

On Amy Poehler's new podcast Good Hang, Johnson shared that after the Razzie announcement, Johnson said she received a message from Bullock, who famously 'won' Worst Actress in 2010 for All About Steve , only to win the Oscar days later for The Blind Side . Johnson told Poehler: 'I recently actually exchanged texts — well, I got a voice note — from Sandra Bullock, because I don't know if you know, but I won the Razzie for Worst Actress. 'There's a lot of good people who have won that… but Sandra Bullock sent me a voice note, being like 'I heard you are in the Razzie club and we should have brunch, we should have a monthly brunch.' Because I guess she won that the year that she won the Oscar as well. It was in the same year, I think.' Understandably, Johnson was surprised. 'I freaked out getting this message from her because she's so iconic to me, as like a movie star. I was like, 'Oh my God.' I was just crazy.' The infamous Madame Web , Sony's much-memed Marvel misfire, saw Johnson play Cassandra Webb, a New York paramedic who gains psychic powers after a near-death experience. It had all the makings of an intriguing origin story, but what hit theaters felt more like a chopped-up relic of a movie caught between studio mandates and shifting creative visions. With an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and just $43 million earned at the domestic box office, it quickly became the internet's punching bag. But Johnson has made it clear she's not taking the blame lying down. She previously explained what went wrong behind the scenes. 'There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way. 'And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.' On Good Hang , she expanded even further, opening up about how disorienting the process was as an actor. 'The final cut of Madame Web was a completely different script than what I attached to. That is a wild thing to like a crazy journey to go on as an artist because you're like, 'Okay, I'm doing something like with my actual body and my actual mind and my heart, my emotions. 'I'm like using things. And it's just being taken and f*cked with.' But you can't do anything about it. Like, what am I gonna do? F*cking cry about Madame Web? Open Channel: What'd You Think of '28 Years Later'?
For a long time, fans of 28 Days Later have held out hope for a third movie. To their surprise, Sony suddenly threw those fans a bone with the announcement 28 Years Later was happening, and what's more, the first film's creative duo of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland were returning to the zombie saga they began in 2002. With each trailer and peek at the film, Years has looked better and scarier. Reactions may have come surprisingly late—shortly before its release in theaters, weirdly—but despite that, they've been mostly high. Even those that don't really think the film works have given props to the cast and the filmmaking techniques used to show off the new suite of infected Garland and Boyle have cooked up. Sony's already got eyes on making at least two more 28 Years Later films, and a sequel, The Bone Temple, is arriving in January 2026. If Boyle and Garland have their way, those plans will involve bringing Cillian Murphy back as 28 Days' Jim for the hopeful third film. Google AI is worse at Pokemon than I was when I was 5 – taking 800 hours to beat the Elite 4 and having a breakdown when its HP got low

If you're someone who thinks AI is almost ready to take over the world, I have some good or bad (depending on your stance on things) news for you: Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro took over 800 hours to beat the 29-year-old children's game Pokemon Blue. There's a Twitch account called Gemini_Plays_Pokemon, a pale imitation of the incredible Twitch Plays Pokemon account that started this trend. First things first: how long did it take the AI to actually complete the game? Well, it was a staggering 813 hours. I feel like you could hit buttons randomly and beat the game faster than that. After some tweaks by the creator of this Twitch channel, the AI managed to halve its time to a still outrageous 406.5 hours. That is actually dead on half the time, which is interesting mathematically but still far too long to beat a game you can win with an overleveled Venusaur. Additionally, as spotted by our friends at PC Gamer, Google DeepMind reported on the Twitch account, and something unusual happens whenever its Pokemon get low on health or power points (PP). Whenever one or both of these conditions are met, "model performance appears to correlate with a qualitatively observable degradation in the model's reasoning capability – for instance, completely forgetting to use the pathfinder tool in stretches of gameplay while this condition persists." This, combined with the AI mistakenly thinking it was playing FireRed and LeafGreen and would need to find the Tea to progress, are part of the reasons it took so long to finish. Honestly, AI just isn't very good at playing Pokemon. Someone else made Claude Plays Pokemon, and that AI spent hours trying to get out of Cerulean city because it kept jumping down a ledge to talk to an NPC it had already spoken to dozens of times. So, these AIs aren't able to beat a game that we could when we barely knew our times tables. Let's not worry about them taking our jobs any time soon.
