Following Shane van Gisbergen's win at the NASCAR Mexico City race, the number of wildcard spots available in the Cup Playoffs has shrunk by one. For former NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick, this puts more pressure on the remaining contenders.

On the latest episode of his Happy Hour podcast, Harvick warned that the drivers sitting in 14th place and beyond need to be "concerned" - especially Josh Berry. He believes that from this point forward they need to race with the intention of winning and can't just settle for points.
'I think everybody from 14th back in the current point standing needs to be concerned,' Kevin Harvick said. 'So Briscoe, Bowman, Buescher, Kyle Busch, Ryan Preece, Carson Hocevar, Ty Gibbs, Brad Keselowski, anybody in between, I think they're worried.
'The guy that's in the points right now that I'm worried about right now is Josh Berry. Where did that 21 car speed and just everything that they started the year go? So I'm a little bit worried about him, but I think that those guys need to race like they need to win. I know they all want to win, but if you're talking about points in your shop, you are having the wrong conversation if you're 14th and back.'
Harvick's not far off. There's a logjam of great drivers at 11th place and beyond that are all reasonably close to each other jockeying for position in the coveted points-qualifying spots in the NASCAR Cup Playoffs.

Harvick spoke at length about how Shane van Gisbergen's big win in Mexico City shook up the standings.
'He's a world-class racer,' Harvick said after the race. 'We thought this was coming, and now we see it with the standings and everything that it mixes up with the points. I still believe we're going to have a couple more winners.

But from SVG's standpoint, he's a world-class road racer, and I think he continues to get better on the ovals, and I think that will make his road racing even better as he gets more comfortable in the cars.'

One thing seems certain: Whichever driver is the first one on the outside looking in won't be inviting van Gisbergen to Thanksgiving dinner anytime soon.

Alex Pereira: Focus on Magomed Ankalaev rematch, not heavyweight move

NEW YORK—Fans clamoring for Alex Pereira to move to heavyweight are going to have to wait a bit longer. Pereira dropped the UFC light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev in the main event of UFC 313 in March. With the heavyweight division up in the air, Jon Jones saying multiple times he's not interested in fighting right now, and interim champ Tom Aspinall looking for an opponent, 'Poatan' would be a popular choice to flip one of the UFC's thinner divisions upside down. Advertisement That time is not now, however, as Pereira has his sights set on a fall return to avenge his loss to Ankalaev. 'Anywhere around the timeframe [of] September, October, November, for me it makes no difference, I want to fight,' Pereira told MMA Fighting at Fanatics Fest. 'My focus right now is fighting Ankalaev... get my belt back, and then we see what happens after.' Pereira has accomplished so much in so little time that the opportunity to win a third divisional title seems like a reasonable goal and request. Right now, Pereira hopes the heavyweight division can get moving again in an entertaining way, but he has his own boxes to check. Advertisement 'Let those guys kill each other in that weight class,' Pereira said. 'Right now I'm just focusing on light heavyweight.' More from

Blue Jays Receive Daulton Varsho News on Friday

Blue Jays Receive Daulton Varsho News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring) is the type of player who could give his team the final push it needs to secure a playoff spot if he takes the next step. Wisconsin native owns a career slash line of .224/.294/.420 after being drafted No. 68 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017. Advertisement However, Varsho has been a productive power hitter, as he notched 27 homers and 74 RBI for the Diamondbacks in 2022, along with 20 homers and 61 RBI for the Blue Jays in 2023. This year, he has eight homers and 20 RBI in just 24 games played. Toronto announced injury updates about Varsho and others before its matchup with Arizona on Friday, via Keegan Matheson. Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27) and left fielder Daulton Varsho (25)© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images "Varsho (hamstring) should be in games early/mid next week, [Yimi] Garcia (shoulder) will likely pitch in a game Monday, [Bowden] Francis (shoulder) had a cortisone injection and won't throw for a few days, and [Anthony] Santander (shoulder) still isn't hitting," he reported. Advertisement Garcia is 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA over 21 appearances and has converted three of six save opportunities to go with six holds. Francis is 2-8 with a 6.05 ERA over 14 starts, and Santander is slashing .179/.273/.304 with six homers and 18 RBI over 50 games. Toronto is three games behind the New York Yankees for first place and a half-game behind the Tampa Bay Rays for second in the AL East. The team is 5-5 in its last 10 contests and occupies the AL's second Wild Card spot. Friday will start a three-game series between the Blue Jays and White Sox at the Rogers Centre. Red Sox rumors: Rival exec outlines trade deadline idea involving Kyle Tucker

The post Red Sox rumors: Rival exec outlines trade deadline idea involving Kyle Tucker appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers with weeks to go before the MLB trade deadline. That has raised a lot of red flags around the organization, as they trudge into the future without the face of their franchise. But some look at the money they've saved and think they may have a plan. Mark Feinsand spoke with an anonymous executive who said the Red Sox may have their eyes on a prized free agent. Advertisement 'They're in a really interesting spot now,' an NL executive told Feinsand. 'They could look to take on an expiring contract at a high price point to get through the season and help them compete this year, while still having the financial means to attack a Kyle Tucker-type in the offseason. I think that newly found financial flexibility allows them a boatload of room to be creative.' Another executive Feinsand spoke to targeted Rhys Hoskins, who has a mutual option for 2026. They could have him play first while Tristan Casas recovers from his season-ending injury. That gives the 2025 Red Sox a chance to make the postseason, opens up first base for Casas next year, and keeps the space open for Tucker. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the team to look at when thinking about pending free agents and the MLB trade deadline. Unless they can turn it around quickly, they can rebuild on the fly with a bunch of trades. Eugenio Suarez should not be considered because he plays third base. But first baseman Josh Naylor, pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr could all end up in Boston. The Red Sox do have a logjam of outfielders and should leave their DH spot open to help themselves out. While the offseason could bring in Kyle Tucker, they need to improve their team for a run this year.
