TONY Eusoff, the 48-year-old actor, has described playing the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee onscreen and in theatre as a significant honour in his two-decade-long artistic career.
Tony, whose full name is Anthony Joseph Hermas Rajiman, shared that he never tires of portraying the legendary artiste.
"I've acted in the 'P. Ramlee The Musical' theatre production and the 'Saloma' TV mini series, which is based on the life story of the late Puan Sri Saloma and previously starred Nabila Huda.
"If it's Saloma's story, there must be a P. Ramlee character in it. I never get tired of playing P. Ramlee because he's a legend, an icon of our arts and culture," he said recently at the premiere of his film, 'Mencari Ramlee'.
Tony also revealed he had previously dreamt of acting in a P. Ramlee film.
"The first time I played P. Ramlee was in the 'Saloma' biopic. I watched many films which starred him and thoroughly studied his character — his movements, his speech, and so on.
"Perhaps because I often watched P. Ramlee's films every night, I even dreamt of acting in one of them.
"But I didn't meet him in my dreams. I only dreamt of acting as P. Ramlee, but it wasn't clear, and the dreams were in black and white," he said.
Speaking about his role in 'Mencari Ramlee', Tony admitted that he initially felt unqualified to play the lead character.
"I see many other actors who could play P. Ramlee and sing better, like Musly Ramlee, but the director had his vision.
"I asked Megat Sharizal, the director of 'Mencari Ramlee', and he told me he chose me for the main role because he believed in my talent to give the best performance for the character.
"Perhaps it's because we've been friends for a long time, and directors often cast actors from among their friends to collaborate on films," he said.
'Mencari Ramlee' also stars Sofia Jane and Mimi Lana, and began screening in cinemas yesterday.

This 20 September 2025, the Mega Star Arena in Kuala Lumpur will transform into a grand stage celebrating one of Malaysia's most beloved cultural icons, Tan Sri P. Ramlee, with the Konsert Legasi P. Ramlee – a tribute concert unlike any other. Announced at a press event held at Kompleks Studio Merdeka, FINAS, Ulu Kelang, the concert is a project by TanahAir Films Sdn. Bhd., a local production house co-founded by renowned media figure Datuk Khairul Anwar Salleh and multi-talented actor-director Adlin Aman Ramlie. This concert isn't just another musical night – it's part of a much bigger vision called Projek Perdana P. Ramlee , a multi-platform initiative to honour the genius of P. Ramlee and his peers, and bring their timeless art into the hearts of a new generation. So, who was P. Ramlee? If you're Malaysian, chances are you've heard his songs or watched his movies – or both. Born in 1929, Tan Sri P. Ramlee was more than a singer – he was a film director, actor, composer, and cultural icon whose legacy shaped Malaysia's entertainment industry. With classics like Bujang Lapok , Hang Tuah , and countless evergreen songs to his name, he's often remembered as a one-man powerhouse of creativity, heart, and humour. A star-studded lineup and a 60-piece orchestra Konsert Legasi P. Ramlee promises a grand performance that's both nostalgic and bold. Think cinematic lighting, theatrical storytelling, and a blend of old-meets-new musical arrangements — all under the baton of four Malaysian music legends: Dato' Ramli MS, Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, Helen Yap, and Michael Veerapen. Together, they'll lead a 60-piece orchestra through more than 30 of P. Ramlee's most treasured songs, some reimagined with contemporary flair, while others stay true to their original form. Taking the stage will be iconic voices like Dato' Jamal Abdillah, Datuk Zainalabidin, Ella, Liza Hanim, Mimi Fly, and Nadeera, each bringing their unique spin to P. Ramlee's timeless music. And for that touch of nostalgia? Tribute performers P. Radhi, Danie Hasbullah, and Musly Ramlee – known for channeling P. Ramlee's signature charm and voice – will make special appearances. More Than a Concert — It's a Cultural Revival 'This concert is more than just entertainment. It is a bridge between generations, a revival of timeless artistic values, and a heartfelt tribute to one of the greatest cultural figures in our nation's history,' Khairul said. Concert director Adlin echoed the sentiment, describing the show as 'a bold reinvention' of the golden era of Malay music. 'It will revive the spirit of P. Ramlee not only in melody, but through every scene, every moment, and every emotional beat,' he shared. The concert marks the second chapter of the Projek Perdana P. Ramlee journey, following the launch of the Legasi Podcast in 2024. According to the organisers, more creative projects under this initiative are still to come. P. Ramlee: A cultural icon whose legacy continues to unite Malaysians

GEORGE TOWN: The late legendary artiste Tan Sri P. Ramlee was more than just a cultural icon; he was also a symbol of national unity whose legacy continues to unify Malaysians regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity, said Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy. She said P. Ramlee's lifetime creative works transcended racial and religious boundaries, depicting the lives of ordinary people with profound humanity, including love, mutual respect, looking out for one another and a strong sense of family. "I believe messages of unity reflected in the works of P. Ramlee, whose real name was Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, will continue to be remembered, remain relevant and serve as a beacon for the harmony of Malaysia Madani. "This aligns with the government's aspiration to foster a united Madani society that is respectful of one another, regardless of race, culture, or religion. P. Ramlee has left us with a timeless legacy through his creative works and brilliant ideas," she said when launching the closing ceremony of Minggu Kenangan P. Ramlee: 'Satu Dalam Sejuta' and the music forum "Kisah Di Sebalik Lagu" here today. She said messages of harmony, unity, cooperation, and mutual respect were brilliantly captured and highlighted in the artiste's works. Also present were National Archives director-general Datuk Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman, Penang P. Ramlee Fan Club president Tan Sri Yussof Latiff and renowned lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan. Various programmes were lined up throughout the event, including a lecture by preacher Datuk Mohamad Kazim Elias, better known as Ustaz Kazim, titled "Sedangkan Lidah Lagi Tergigit" on May 24 and the "Satu Dalam Sejuta" run on May 25 at Padang Kota Lama. Saraswathy said the programme aligns well with the aspirations of Ikhtiar 4 under the National Unity Ministry's 2025 Strategic Plan, particularly within the Socio-Cultural Community Cluster: Semarak Perpaduan, which aims to deepen appreciation for national heritage, instil pride in cultural identity and strengthen bonds among Malaysia's multiracial communities through the arts and shared history. "Besides that, collaboration and partnership in organising such programmes are crucial in efforts to preserve the nation's cultural heritage. "I would like to take this opportunity to encourage government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and corporate bodies to collaborate in forming similar partnerships for the benefit of society and the nation. "May the National Archives' aspiration to disseminate information and strengthen public understanding of unity through the messages conveyed in P. Ramlee's works be successfully realised. "It is hoped that through these efforts, the spirit of cohesion and harmony among the Malaysia Madani society can be preserved," she said. – Bernama
