Malaysia taps fresh chip momentum with Intel, Vishay expansion plans
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has held discussions with leading tech giant, Intel, regarding the latter's plans on reinvestment and expansion of its operations in Malaysia.
Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Intel has invested RM50 billion to-date, and provided employment opportunities to 12,300 local workers.
'Intel's presence in Malaysia since 1972 has grown in tandem with the country's rise as a global semiconductor hub.
'This meeting reflects Intel's continued confidence in Malaysia as its key investment destination outside the United States,' he said in a post on the social media platform X today.
He added that the Malaysian government, through MITI and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), remains fully committed to supporting Intel's expansion in the country.
'Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030), and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), we will continue to strengthen a sustainable and competitive industrial ecosystem,' Tengku Zafrul said.
Meanwhile, in a separate post, the MITI minister said a United States-based manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, Vishay Intertechnology, has expressed its intention to expand its operations in Malaysia.
'They already have a presence in Melaka, and the rise in the number of high-tech semiconductor facilities is in line with the objectives of NIMP2030 and NSS,' he added.
Tengku Zafrul is currently on a working visit to Washington, United States. — Bernama

His comments come amid speculation of a potential leadership reshuffle ahead of the party's 71st Muktamar — or annual congress — in September, part of wider discussions on internal renewal. In February, it was reported that Tuan Ibrahim had not confirmed whether he would defend his deputy president post, stating that it was up to PAS delegates to nominate him if they wished. Tuan Ibrahim also highlighted Abdul Hadi's influence in global Islamic circles, saying he is regularly consulted on international issues, including the Sunni-Shiah divide and the Israel conflict. Abdul Hadi, who is also Marang MP, had earlier this week undergone heart surgery. Supporters and critics have predicted that Abdul Hadi may take the less strenuous post of spiritual adviser rather than president, with Datuk Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar widely seen as a possible successor.

Police slam ‘irresponsible, damaging' report linking new IGP Mohd Khalid to PKR, say won't tolerate attempt to undermine force
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 – The police have today refuted a report by Malay daily Sinar Harian linking newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Mohd Ismail to a political party. In a statement, the police criticised the media outlet for failing to verify the information before publication, calling the report irresponsible and damaging to the reputation of both the police force and the individual concerned. 'Journalistic ethics demand that all published reports undergo fact-checking, cross-verification, and uphold integrity in reporting,' the police force's secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Abdullah said. The statement emphasised that the police force operates on the principles of neutrality, integrity, and professionalism. They reiterated that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of, or held any position in, any political party as alleged in the article. 'The statement is false, misleading, and creates a negative perception that casts doubt on the credibility of the national security force,' they said. Kamaruzaman added that the police would not tolerate any attempts to undermine public trust in its officers or operations. Yesterday, PKR has clarified that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of PKR, let alone held any position within the party. PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said that the circulation of an inaccurate profile linking the IGP to a political party could undermine his image and credibility. She added that it could also fuel negative perceptions of PKR as the ruling party if members of the public believe that Mohd Khalid's appointment was politically motivated. Mohd Khalid — who succeeded Tan Sri Razarudin Husein — began his policing career in 1987 and has served in various key roles including deputy director of Special Branch, the police intelligence division, and as security liaison officer in London. Prior to his new appointment, the 60-year-old served as director of the Special Branch and retired on April 8 but was reappointed on a contract basis from that date until now.

After paedo group on Facebook exposed, Nurul Izzah calls for urgent action over child sexual abuse material in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar today urged for immediate and coordinated action from government agencies to tackle the growing threat of online child sexual exploitation. Following the recent exposure of a Facebook group allegedly sharing explicit content involving primary school children, Nurul Izzah said the incident highlighted the urgent need for systemic reform and swift enforcement in cases of online abuse. 'This is not just an alarming incident; it is a national disgrace,' she said in a statement, referring to the now-defunct Facebook group, which reportedly had more than 12,000 members. She called on the Ministry of Communications and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to reveal their monitoring mechanisms and assess their effectiveness in detecting such crimes. 'The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the police must release public reports on this case and previous similar cases that have remained hidden from public scrutiny,' she said. She also called for a detailed implementation update of the Online Safety Act to be tabled in Parliament. Nurul Izzah further urged for progress updates on the special D11 sexual crimes unit, including additional funding, and proposed that Malaysia replicate regional policing networks such as Elipsia to bolster cross-border efforts against online child abuse. Elipsia refers to the Europe-Latin America Initiative for the Safety of Children and Adolescents network, an international police cooperation across 11 Latin America countries and seven European countries to jointly confront sexual abuse and exploitation of minors on the internet. She also called for greater public access to the Child Sexual Offender Registry, enhancements to school health education curricula to include online safety, and a community-level approach involving local leaders and NGOs. 'The statistics are grim — child sexual crimes rose by 26.5 per cent in 2023, while [child sexual abuse material] cases surged by 139.3 per cent,' she said, adding that these figures demanded more than just legislation, but effective, ground-level action. Nurul Izzah urged parents, teachers, religious and community leaders, and social media users to work collectively — saying they can no longer afford to remain passive observers. 'In the face of a growing digital threat, we must rise as protectors — resolute, responsible, and unafraid to confront the rot at its roots,' she said. Last week, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the Facebook group sharing images of minors have been shut down after the MCMC contacted Meta to disable the Facebook account. Teo also said that the MCMC and the police had launched Op Pedo last year, resulting in the arrest of 13 individuals and the discovery of more than 40,000 child sexual abuse materials and other pornographic content.
