York late-night taxi marshal scheme returns for spring
Taxi marshals have returned to York to ensure two city centre cab ranks are safe for people to use on Friday and Saturday nights.The scheme, operated by York Business Improvement District (BID), has operated from spring to December for the past eight years, with two marshals on patrol at each location from 23:00 to 03:00 BST.Since its inception, it has helped to reduce noise complaints, street fights and public urination, according to the BID.Operations manager Carl Alsop said it ensured "local residents can sleep and local businesses aren't worried".
"Ultimately, there might be a lot of drunk people there, but there also might be people who've just finished work of have gone to see a friend and just want to get home."The last thing they want is to be worried about a big group of people who've had a drink and might start something," he said.
The scheme is funded by local businesses, residents and the licensing team at City of York Council, with the BID contributing "very little money", Mr Alsop said.It contributes to the city's Purple Flag status, according to councillor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport.
The status, awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), is an internationally-recognised scheme similar to Blue Flag awards to coastal towns for high beach standards.Purple Flags are given in recognition of efforts made to create safe and thriving places for people visiting pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants at night.Ravilious said the scheme had been "warmly received" by residents and businesses since it started in 2017.It "supports the aim of reducing violence against women and girls" and "provides additional securities to the taxi trade", she said.

The 53-mile journey takes around two and a half hours, which is its only downside. Travelling to Brighton by train is much faster, and takes between 58 minutes and one hour and 10 minutes depending on the route. However, single adult fares as almost double the price - averaging out at £8. If you're itching for a mini-staycation, there is a whole range of accommodation types in Brighton to suit your budget. For example, a weekend's stay (Friday, July 4-6) at a 'charming' townhouse will set you back just £176. This is based on two adults sharing a double room with a shared bathroom. However, it's worth pointing out that this property is located 1.6 miles from the centre. For those wanting a more luxurious weekend, check out Leonardo Hotel. Conveniently located next to Brighton Railway Station, the four-star hotel is a 15-minute walk to the beach, and is within close proximity to the Laines, Brighton Dome, Theatre Royal Brighton and the Gardner Centre. Staying here, in a standard double room, on the exact same nights cost £409.

The UK's best camping holiday spot has been revealed (Image: Getty Images) Brits planning camping holidays this summer have just been given a dose of staycation inspiration, as the UK's best camping and caravanning hotspot has been revealed. The campsite experts at scoured the UK and compared thousands of sites, based on reviews by holidaymakers in 2024. Topping the list was Lincolnshire, which had more 'gold status' campsites than any other UK county in the study. (Gold status is achieved when you have 10/10 reviews from guests). The Pitchup team explained: "Encompassing fens, marshes, wolds and coast, it's primarily known for agriculture, and great sausages. Located between Yorkshire to the north, East Anglia to the south and the Midlands to the west, it's an easy destination to reach from across large parts of the UK - and its eastern location means it enjoys more sunshine and drier weather than many counties."
