First outbreak of rare H5N9 bird flu reported on California duck farm as cases of H5N1 continue to rise

Independent27-01-2025

The first confirmed case of the rare H5N9 bird flu has been reported in the U.S.
The virus was confirmed in a commercial duck farm in Merced County, California, according to the World Organization for Animal Health.
'The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI related events,' the organization wrote in a report.
Authorities also detected the more common H5N1 strain on the same farm. Nearly 119,000 birds there had been killed by December.
The reports comes after news that 100,000 ducks would be killed on a New York farm that was quarantined for an outbreak.

Brazil poised to declare itself bird flu 'free,' state official says

SAO PAULO, June 18 (Reuters) - Brazil is ready to declare the country free of the bird flu virus on commercial flocks, Edivilson Brum, the head of Rio Grande do Sul state's agriculture department, said on Wednesday in a statement. The 28-day countdown for reclaiming the country's disease-free status began on May 22 following the complete disinfection of the farm where Brazil's only commercial flock outbreak was detected last month. Under existing trade protocols, China and other importers banned chicken imports from Brazil, the world's largest exporter, pending measures to control the disease on commercial facilities. "We have fulfilled all the steps provided for in the health protocols so that Brazil can once again declare itself an influenza-free country to the World Organization for Animal Health," Brum said, referring to the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI). The Brazilian ministry of agriculture did not have an immediate comment. Brazil's first outbreak hit a chicken breeder farm in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul last month, triggering trade bans that may now be reversed with the regaining of the disease-free status. Reclaiming Brazil's status as free HPAI is not automatic and must be confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), according to guidelines from the body.

Bird flu outbreak confirmed in West Yorkshire poultry

A case of bird flu has been confirmed in poultry in West virus was discovered at a site near Ravensthorpe, near Mirfield, on 11 June, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). An almost two-mile (3km) protection zone and a six-mile (10km) surveillance zone cordon have been put in place around the said all the birds at the property would be humanely culled. It is the latest outbreak in the county of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 advised bird keepers to check on the interactive map, to see if they are impacted and read the housing measure declaration, which explains the December, all poultry and other captive birds in affected parts of England have had to be kept indoors to prevent the spread of bird virus, which affects poultry and wild birds, spreads through contaminated feed and water, or through birds' droppings and saliva. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone has been declared around the site near Ravensthorpe, Kirklees. It comes after a new animal study from the US Centres for Disease Control found that bird flu is capable of spreading through the air. In January, a bird flu outbreak was found at another farm in England, and experts feared the virus is one mutation from becoming pandemic. The government said all poultry on the infected site, in East Yorkshire, was humanely culled after a strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus was detected. It was the 16th outbreak of the HPAI H5N1 strain in kept birds in 2024, according to the Nation Farmers Union (NFU) AI tracker. In December, the virus was found on Turkey farms in Norfolk, which led to the culling of thousands of birds just days before Christmas. Bird flu, or avian influenza, has killed millions of birds worldwide. The highly contagious bug is now spreading to mammals, raising fears it could trigger another pandemic through potential human-to-human transmission. In December, an animal sanctuary in Shelton, Washington, announced that twenty exotic cats, including a Bengal tiger, four cougars, a lynx and four bobcats, have died after contracting bird flu. So far, there is no evidence that H5N1 can spread between humans. But this increase in transmission gives the virus lots of opportunities to mutate - a process where a pathogen changes and can become more dangerous. Experts from the US recently discovered H5N1 is already just one mutation away from developing the ability to transmit person-to-person. Scientists at Scripps Research in San Diego tested various genetic mutations on virus material from infected cattle. They found that the Q226L mutation enhanced the virus's ability to attach to human-like cell receptors, giving bird flu the potential to behave like other human flu viruses. A recent case of bird flu suggests the virus might have already mutated to better spread among humans. The case, spotted this month in a hospitalised Louisiana man, is the first "severe" bird flu case in the US, amid its rapid spread through cows this year. Tests show the case involved a mutated version of H5N1 that helps it bind to human upper respiratory cells. This could make it easier to spread between people through coughing or sneezing, raising concerns the virus is adapting to infect humans more effectively. Bird flu viruses do not typically bind to a cell receptor in human upper airways, which helps explain why H5N1 rarely infects people or spreads between them. Bird flu is spread by close contact with an affected bird. This includes touching or petting an infected bird, touching droppings or bedding, or killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. However, bird flu cannot be caught through eating fully cooked poultry or eggs, even in areas with an outbreak of bird flu. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the human risk remains low, but urges countries to share information quickly for monitoring and preparedness as the virus spreads. 3 So far, there is no evidence that H5N1 can spread between humans Credit: Getty
