Justice Department uncovers thousands of 'intimate' photos and videos during ex-Michigan coach hacking probe
The Justice Department's investigation into Matt Weiss, the former Baltimore Ravens and Michigan assistant football coach accused of hacking into the personal accounts of more than 2,000 college athletes, uncovered that the ex-coach stole thousands of "candid and intimate" photos and videos.
The revelation came during a court filing in a lawsuit against Weiss and the university after lawyers representing the victims in this case shared an email from the Justice Department's Mega Victim Case Assistance Program.
"Thousands of candid, intimate photographs and videos have been seized from the defendant's electronic devices and from his cloud storage accounts," the email read, via The Associated Press. "Many show victims naked. Some show victims engaged in explicit sexual acts."
The filing came weeks after Weiss pleaded not guilty to a 24-count federal indictment. The charges were announced last month — more than two years after Weiss, 42, was fired from his coaching position under Harbaugh after an investigation into the alleged crimes.
According to the indictment, Weiss "gained unauthorized access to student athlete databases of more than 100 colleges and universities that were maintained by a third-party vendor." He then allegedly downloaded personal information and data of more than 150,000 athletes and, from there, was able to access the information of more than 2,000 athletes, including access to their social media, email and cloud storage.
Weiss predominantly targeted women, prosecutors said.
Weiss spent more than a decade coaching in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens in various roles before he left following the 2020 season to coach under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. He was fired in 2023 during an investigation into the alleged crimes.
Weiss is accused of committing the alleged crimes from 2015 to January 2023.
Weiss is facing 14 counts of unauthorized access to computers and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft. He is facing a maximum of five years imprisonment for each of the unauthorized access charges and up to two years for each count of identity theft.

Police: 1 killed, 3 injured in shooting at Royal Oak Twp. park
One person was killed and three others were wounded in a mass shooting overnight at a Royal Oak Township park, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers from the Metro Detroit Post said a 44-year-old Detroit man was killed in the shooting, which was reported at 1:45 a.m., Sunday, June 22. Three other people were treated for non-fatal gunshot wounds at three different area hospitals, police said in a post on X. State police said no arrests have been made and no motives have been determined. Detectives were gathering evidence, conducting interviews and processing the crime scene on Sunday. State police were alerted to the shooting from an open 911 call during which the dispatcher could hear banging sounds and screaming in the background. When troopers arrived at the park, they found the 44-year-old Detroit man with a gunshot would to his head. They administered first aid and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. During the investigation, police said, they learned of three additional victims who were being treated for gunshot wounds at three different hospitals. They have been identified as a 33-year-old male from Detroit, a 15-year-old from Macomb and a 19-year-old from Detroit. The gender of the last two victims was not provided. State police said there was a large crowd in the park from a party when officers arrived. Officers from nearby Oak Park aided in the initial response and helped secure the scene, state police said. 1 cut with knife in Battle Creek; 1 arrested
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman was arrested after a woman was cut with a knife early Saturday morning in Battle Creek. Shortly after midnight, officers with the Battle Creek Police Department were sent to the area of Parkway Drive near Hubbard Street after receiving reports about an assault with a knife. Responding officers found a 29-year-old Battle Creek woman with injuries. She was treated at the scene and released. She directed officers toward a group of people who were trying to get into a vehicle about a block from the scene. The officers stopped the group before they left and identified a 21-year-old woman as the suspect who had cut the woman, the sheriff's office said. Armed gunman shot dead after opening fire at Sunday church service
One person was injured at a Wayne, Michigan church on Sunday morning after a suspect opened fire on the congregation mid-service. "The Wayne Police Department responded to an active shooter at Crosspointe Church in Wayne this morning," the department said. "Upon arrival, officers determined that a security guard for the church shot and killed the suspect. One victim was shot in the leg. Please avoid the area. Officers are still actively investigating." Chaotic video on social media reportedly shows congregants ducking behind their seats before running towards the back of the church. "Everybody to the back," a woman yells. "Please, everybody, come to the back." According to WXYZ, one person was injured in the shooting that happened around 11:45 a.m. local time. The outlet said that the armed suspect was on his way into the church when a person outside the church tried to stop him using a truck. The FBI is monitoring the attack. "Our leadership and support teams are on the ground, at the scene, in Wayne, Michigan providing assistance and investigative support," FBI deputy director Dan Bongino said on X.
