Reddit Mulls Eye‑Scan as Proof of Human Authenticity

Arabian Post5 hours ago

Reddit is exploring integration of Worldcoin's iris‑scanning Orb technology to verify that account holders are genuine, unique individuals while preserving user anonymity. The move aims to curb bot activity and AI‑generated content, and to comply with emerging age‑verification regulations.
In discussions with Tools for Humanity, the Orb would capture an encrypted representation of a user's iris—known as an IrisCode—to assign a secure, anonymous World ID. That identifier confirms uniqueness across the Reddit platform without revealing the user's real identity.
News of the potential partnership has sparked debate. Proponents argue the system could enhance trust and moderate authenticity, while critics express concerns over biometric data collection by private firms. Already, public backlash on social media indicates many users may oppose such a shift, citing privacy and anonymity fears.

World has thus far deployed more than 12 million iris scans via Orbs in cities across the US, UK, and South Korea, awarding users Worldcoin cryptocurrency in exchange. Its age‑detection software refuses scans for those under 18—a feature that may assist Reddit with compliance.
Reddit disclosed in May that it needs 'a little more information' from users to fulfill regulatory requirements around age and AI-generated content, though it did not mention Worldcoin at the time. The platform has also taken legal action against experiments using AI to mimic real users.
World's supporters emphasise that the IrisCode does not match stored images; rather, it is encrypted, fragmented and cannot be reverse‑engineered into a biometric photograph. After the initial scan, raw images are deleted. Still, critics and regulators in Europe have flagged concerns that anonymisation is reversible or incomplete.
Critics, including privacy advocates and policy makers, point out that the system could still enable re‑identification. The Electronic Privacy Information Center has described Worldcoin as a 'potential privacy nightmare,' and regulators in Germany, Spain and Portugal have raised doubts about its data‑handling practices.
Reddit remains silent publicly, with no confirmed timeline for implementation. The platform is reportedly discussing an opt‑in model, where users voluntarily choose iris‑based verification to gain benefits such as enhanced reputation or reduced spam.
The move comes amid mounting pressure on digital platforms. Governments in the US are drafting age‑verification laws, and techniques using AI to create deep‑fake personas are challenging online discourse integrity. A study by the University of Zurich, prompting Reddit legal threats, alerts to AI's ability to impersonate real individuals during debates.
For Reddit, the Orb's age‑gating tech could help block under‑18s in compliance with evolving laws. The system also enables verification without compromising pseudonymity—users would not need to share names or personal data.
World has attracted significant investment—some USD 300 million—to expand its infrastructure. Investors include Andreessen Horowitz and Bain Capital Crypto, and partnerships have been forged with Visa and Match Group to pilot World ID in industries like finance and dating services.
Yet the deployment of Orbs has drawn scrutiny. European data‑protection regulators in Germany and Spain suspended operations, citing unresolved concerns. In Hong Kong, a probe found that biometric imagery collection breached privacy laws, ordering users' data blocked or deleted.
Users on Reddit voice sharp criticism. One commenter wrote, 'But supposing I have an eye condition… reddit seems extremely happy with all the very obvious bots …' Others express unwillingness to sacrifice anonymity: 'Tell me—should I be happy … or sad that they want to verify us users by a method we already declined?'
Despite opposition, World's Orb model is gaining attention across tech platforms. Match Group is piloting age‑verification via World ID in Japan. Visa is launching a debit card for users who complete orb scans. Such trials signal mainstream interest even as privacy issues remain unresolved.
Reddit's potential adoption would mark one of the most high‑profile entries of biometric verification in a major social network. It signals a pivotal moment in balancing digital authenticity with user privacy, as AI‑generated content and regulatory demands escalate.

UAE: Thousands of teachers to undergo AI-driven assessment to boost student skills

Thousands of teachers will undergo an artificial intelligence-driven gap analysis to understand how to ensure they nurture the cognitive and practical skills of young students to thrive, said Sarah Al Amiri, the UAE's Minister of Education. "We have redesigned the competency framework for educators because their role needs to evolve to equip them with the skills needed to guide learners in an AI and tech-rich world. This very week, we have thousands of educators across the UAE to undergo AI-driven gap analysis to understand better how to bridge the gap from where educators are today to where they need to be," Al Amiri said during the ForsaTEK — an annual event hosted by Emirates Group to showcase its innovation, proof of concepts, technology and start-up ecosystems. 'Our goal is to empower educators – and not replace them – to ensure they can nurture the cognitive, ethical and practical skills our young people need to thrive,' she said while speaking on the topic of 'How technology is redefining public education.' The UAE has been aggressively promoting AI in the education sector, as the country plans to introduce AI as a subject across all public schools from next year to prepare the next generation for a different future. 'Educators can no longer be simply deliverers of knowledge because information is everywhere. Instead, they must become enhancers of skills, guides and mentors for students instead of values and purpose. 'The human relationship between educator and learner remains irreplaceable, even in the age of AI; an effective educator today helps students develop deeper reasoning, build confidence to question and explore, cultivate a sense of responsibility and ethics in using technologies in the UAE, we are taking this quite seriously. We are revamping our data collection analytics to allow AI to support smart decisions at all levels of the education system,' she said in her speech. She pointed out that traditional classroom models are struggling to engage students who are closest to technology, specifically upper grades transitioning into university, and as a result, fewer young people aspire to become educators. Weakens students' critical thinking The minister warned that if students become passive consumers of AI outputs, this could weaken their ability to think critically and independently. She noted that studies are already indicating that AI use can impact cognitive development, particularly in areas such as reasoning and problem-solving. 'If it's not guided carefully, over-reliance on AI may lead to superficial learning, knowing the answer but not understanding the process. If students become passive consumers of AI outputs, we risk weakening their ability to think critically and independently, and this will impact the outcome of the workforce,' the UAE minister said, adding that the development of human skills must be prioritised. 'When people understand how things work, the logic, the mechanics of the system, they become better and more discerning users of technology. They can apply judgment, adapt to new tools and spot errors. They remain resilient as technology evolves in a world of AI. It is not enough to know how to use those tools. You must teach people to understand when and why to use them and when not to. Skills such as reasoning, curiosity, resilience, and ethical judgment will remain essential in education, in aviation and beyond. This also means that the role of the educator must evolve,' she added.

'We believe that technology should not only drive performance but also empower people.' – Peter Oganesean, HP

Peter Oganesean, Managing Director – Middle East and East Africa at HP, has penned an exclusive thought leadership article that examines how AI and personalisation are totally transforming productivity across the Middle East region. The Evolving Work Landscape AI is rapidly redefining productivity across the Middle East, with 91% of regional organizations viewing it as the most transformative force in business today. Yet, there is still a significant disconnect between employee expectations and working realities, even with the quick pace of development. According to the 2024 HP Work Relationship Index, just 28% of knowledge workers report having a healthy relationship with work—a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in employee engagement. At the same time, the data reveals a powerful insight: 87% of employees would willingly waive part of their salary in exchange for a more personalised work experience. The question is no longer whether we should personalise the workplace, but rather how to do so. The Shift Towards Human-Centric Innovation At HP, we believe that technology should not only drive performance but also empower people. Our goal is to make work feel more human. Our strategy is built on one core principle: building solutions that put people first. It could be through collaboration, better protection, or just helping employees feel more in control of their day. Employees are more committed, innovative, and resilient when they have access to technology that meets their demands. And this people-first approach to innovation has never been more important in an area as dynamic as the Middle East, where digital change is moving at a rapid rate. How AI-Powered Devices Are Shaping the Way We Work The next generation of AI PCs are engineered to bring personalisation to the forefront. These are not just tools; they are companions that adapt in real time to how users work, communicate, and collaborate. The HP OmniBook Ultra Flip has a 3K OLED display, a long-lasting battery, and a powerful AI engine that adjusts in real time to your needs. Whether you're jumping between meetings or deep in a creative flow, this device keeps up without missing a beat. Features like AI-powered onlooker detection and presence sensing offer an added layer of privacy and intelligence, making work smarter and safer. What's more important is how these devices feel. They don't just get the job done, they help people feel more active and in control. And that matters. Employees today are seeking more than efficiency; they want autonomy, purpose, and flexibility. With AI, we finally have the tools to deliver those needs in real, tangible ways, turning technology into a true enabler of meaningful work. The Numbers Say It All: The Work Relationship is unsatisfactory The findings from the 2024 HP Work Relationship Index highlight a clear correlation between AI and employee satisfaction. 73% of knowledge workers who already use AI said it makes their jobs easier—yet a majority still don't feel fulfilled by their work. This is a clear sign that organisations need to go beyond productivity and start designing work that truly supports people. The good news? AI is making a difference—adoption jumped from 38% to 66% in a year, and users are globally happier than the non-users. We are experiencing a new era of AI that enhances emotional connection in addition to operational efficiency. AI becomes a driver of workplace fulfillment and well-being with tools that improve collaboration, personalise workflows, and reduce friction. Where the future of work is heading The future of work is already here—and thriving in it means putting people first. That's where AI, and companies such as HP, truly make an impact. We are building a future where people can truly appreciate their work. And that begins by ensuring the tools we provide work for them, not the other way around.
