AAA7 Advisory Council to Meet
The Area Agency on Aging District 7 will be hosting an in-person Advisory Council Meeting on Thursday, May 29 and is inviting interested community members to attend and participate. The AAA7 covers ten core counties in southern Ohio, including: Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto and Vinton.
Under the Older Americans Act, which is the foundation of all Area Agencies on Aging throughout the country, AAAs are directed to establish an Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is charged with furthering the Agency's mission of developing and coordinating community-based systems of services for all older persons in the planning and service area. It is the official advisory body of the AAA7, its Board of Trustees and AAA7 staff.
During Advisory Council meetings, input is provided on the AAA7 Strategic Plan and community plans and programs, in addition to planning and implementing public hearings, and representing the interest of older adults in the community. Older adults, consumers, elected officials, agency representatives, and others interested in the concerns of older adults are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The AAA7 is currently welcoming anyone who is interested and lives in one of the AAA7's ten core counties to participate in the next Advisory Council Meeting on May 29th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the AAA7 Office in Jackson located at 1 Acy Avenue. The guest speaker for the meeting will be Michael Reiser, Senior Supervising Attorney for Legal Aid of Southwest Ohio.

Burlington library branch reopens after fire-related closure
Burlington Public Library's Aldershot Branch reopened Monday, June 2 after a nearly month-long closure for flooding repairs. It was the second closure this year, after the 550 Plains Rd. E. branch suffered water damage during a small stove fire in Halton Community Housing's Aldershot Village seniors apartment building above the branch on Feb. 6. The fire was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system. The branch closed for preliminary repairs immediately following the fire, then temporarily reopened with reduced services and some areas closed to the public from Feb. 21 to May 3. It closed again for 29 days from May 4 to June 1 to complete repairs. Burlington Public Library spokesperson Lauren Arkell confirmed Monday, June 2 the branch had reopened at 9 a.m., resuming regular hours and services. Arkell said there are no changes or additions to previous branch programs or services. 'But the refreshed interior colours and deep cleaning throughout make the branch look and feel brand new,' Arkell said. Final repair costs were not yet available. On Monday, Burlington Public Library also launched a two-week Customer Satisfaction Survey, which can be accessed at the library's website . Elysian Fields ISD Superintendent Monica Simmons resigns
WASKON, Texas (KETK) — Elysian Fields ISD Superintendent Monica Simmons announced her resignation from the position last week after serving the district since 2002. Tyler Public Library to host Summer Kick-Off event for all ages Simmons spent her time at Elysian Fields ISD as both an administrator and teacher, where she started out as a student teacher before becoming a first grade teacher. Simmons has worn many hats at EFISD including curriculum director, federal programs director, testing coordinator, teacher, assistant principal and principal. In 2022, Simmons took over the superintendent position after Maynard Chapman's retirement and she accomplished many feats. Her role in developing EFISD's Strategic Plan laid down a new vision for the district's future by helping pass the 2024 bond that secured resources for facility and transportation upgrades. 'I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together,' Simmons said. 'The progress we've made is a direct reflection of the unwavering dedication of our students, staff, families, and community. It has been an honor to work in partnership with each of you in support of a shared vision for excellence.' Smith County ESD2 holds 'push in' ceremony for new fire engine According to EFISD, the bond allowed the construction of a new elementary school that is currently being built and is expected to open in Fall 2026. EDITORIAL: Jamie Herrmann: Flipping the script on aging
May 29—Every May, the Area Agency on Aging District 7 (AAA7) joins the nation in the observance of Older Americans Month, a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities. The 2025 theme for Older Americans Month is "Flip the Script on Aging," which focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. Older Americans enrich our communities with their strength, wisdom, and diverse life experiences. In recognition of Older Americans Month, the AAA7 has met this month with County Commissioners in all ten of the counties in our service area. Each county signed a proclamation declaring May 2025 Older Americans Month and encouraged residents to join them in recognizing the value they bring to each of our communities. Unfortunately, our time for celebration is over-shadowed by the concerns regarding potential federal policy changes and funding cuts that would impact services for our older adults. Currently, there is a draft Health and Human Services (HHS) budget that, if approved, would result in the drastic reduction or elimination of some Older Americans Act (OAA) programs that are provided through our Agency and local providers. Programs such as wellness classes, nutrition services, etc. It also poses a threat to our Ombudsman Program responsible for advocating and protecting the rights of older adults in long-term care settings. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a reconciliation bill that institutes significant cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It is now up to the Senate to protect these vital services and supports for older Ohioans. Medicaid is the largest payer of long-term services and supports and the largest provider of home and community-based services (HCBS). Cutting Medicaid HCBS will ultimately lead to more older adults going into nursing homes, which are the more expensive option for long-term care. SNAP is a vital support for older adults across the state as a nutritious diet plays a significant role in promoting health, healing and well-being. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the proposed changes and cuts to SNAP could force millions of people off the program, including many older adults who rely on the program to eat. To be proactive, we have created a template that you can use to help craft a message that can be sent along to our federal legislators. Together, we can let our elected officials know that we value these programs and want to make sure they continue providing valuable services and supports for many years to come.
