Govt plans to launch safety rating for trucks and CVs
The
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
is planning to introduce a safety assessment rating system for trucks and commercial vehicles, mirroring the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP). This initiative is aimed at enhancing vehicle production quality and safety. The government is already working on safety standards for battery-operated e-rickshaws to address existing safety concerns and boost employment.
These announcements were made during a two-day workshop on Vehicle and Fleet safety organised by the New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), where discussions focused on improving vehicle safety worldwide and in India, with the goal of reducing road accidents and fatalities.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said, 'The idea is to encourage manufacturers to improve the production quality making vehicles more safe .
The ministry is also addressing the working conditions of truck drivers, with plans to regulate their working hours, which currently extend to 13-14 hours a day. To combat the shortage of truck drivers, the government intends to establish 32 state-of-the-art driving institutes across the country.
Air conditioning in driver compartments has already been mandated, and
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems
(ADAS) are also being implemented to support drivers.
Safety challenge
Dr. Rohit Baluja, President of IRTE, said 'The Two day Workshop will review progress in vehicle safety worldwide and in India since 2000 and the priority actions needed to achieve further improvements by 2030 and beyond. In particular, the meeting will examine efforts to improve automobile safety worldwide by reviewing the progress made by the G20 major economies, including India, to implement the Global Plan vehicle safety recommendations and feature special sessions on fleet and motorcycle safety.'
India faces a significant challenge with road accidents, accounting for a high number of fatal crashes each year. There are 4.8 lakh road crashes each year resulting in 1.8 lakh deaths. The government's focus on road safety, safe highways, vehicle safety, and electric vehicles is aimed at addressing this critical issue.

FASTag annual pass at Rs 3,000: Check out the rules, date, who can apply, and much more
FASTag annual pass: From August 15, 2025, a revolutionary FASTag annual pass priced at ₹3,000 will transform highway travel for private vehicle owners in India. Announced by Nitin Gadkari, this prepaid toll scheme offers up to 200 toll-free trips or one year of unlimited access across National Highways and Expressways. Tailored for cars, jeeps, and vans, the new pass replaces cumbersome monthly top-ups with one seamless payment, promoting cashless travel and reducing congestion at toll plazas. With potential savings of up to 70% compared to regular toll rates, frequent commuters, and long-distance travelers stand to benefit significantly. Ready to streamline your journeys and save money effortlessly? Discover how this pass could redefine your road trips. FASTags annual plan start date Beginning August 15, 2025, the government will offer a new Annual FASTag Pass. You can travel up to 200 miles on national highways without paying additional tolls for just ₹3,000. Rules do apply, though, and every journey is meticulously tallied. What is FASTags annual plan? Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched a new FASTag yearly plan. The new proposal expands on the prior use of the FASTag in several ways. Users can now recharge for at least Rs 3,000 under the new FASTag annual plan, covering 200 trips or a full year, whichever comes first. According to the minister, the new method addresses the "long-standing issues" associated with toll plazas. It is only intended for private non-commercial vehicles like automobiles, jeeps, and vans. Additionally, he promised that the average cost of a toll plaza pass would drop to just Rs 15, saving users at least Rs 7,000 per pass. How does this new system operate? It is scheduled to take effect on August 15, 2025. Let's examine every important aspect of the FASTag yearly strategy. Is FASTags annual plan mandatory? There is no requirement to follow this new FASTag yearly plan. Another plan is to aim for seamless travel and avoid traffic jams at the toll booth. This implies that the FASTag system will not be altered as it currently exists. If they decide not to purchase the Annual Pass, they can still use their FASTag to pay for tolls normally, with fees levied according to the going rates at each toll booth. FASTags annual plan's price As previously stated, the new FASTag yearly plan has a minimum annual cost of Rs 3,000. Upon reaching 200 journeys or a full year of use, whichever occurs first, the pass will automatically return to its normal FASTag functioning. However, drivers can buy a new annual pass immediately if they hit the 200-trip restriction before the year ends. This pass cannot be transferred to another vehicle; it is exclusively associated with the vehicle on which the FASTag is registered. Each crossing is considered a single trip at location-based toll stations, while return trips are recorded as two. One full entry and exit shall be regarded as a single journey in the event of closed toll systems. However, according to a Ministry statement, the pass's cost is subject to change every year, with changes going into effect on April 1. Therefore, beginning with each fiscal year, the minimum pricing will likely rise (or fall). How to activate FASTags annual plan? Only until the vehicle's eligibility and associated FASTag have been confirmed will the pass be activated. After being accepted, the user has to pay Rs 3,000 through the NHAI website or the Rajmargyatra mobile app for the base year 2025–2026. The Annual Pass will be activated on the registered FASTag following payment processing, and the user will get SMS updates regarding the pass. The Annual Pass can be added to an existing FASTag account if it satisfies the requirements, so those who currently have one don't need to purchase a new one. This entails being properly attached to the car's windscreen, being associated with a legitimate registration number, and not being placed on a blacklist. Who can avail FASTag annual pass? Cars, Jeeps, and vans are the non-commercial personal vehicles for which the plan is specifically designed. The vehicle must have a current FASTag to be eligible for the annual pass. The FASTag needs to be properly affixed to the car's windshield. A legitimate Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) should be linked to it. There should be no controversy or blacklisting of the FASTag. To be eligible, users whose FASTag is linked to just a chassis number must update their data with the full VRN. How do you calculate a trip? At toll plazas with a point system: It counts as one trip each time you cross a toll. Traveling somewhere and coming back will be considered two excursions. At closed toll roads (such as highways): One trip is one whole journey (entry to exit). Will you receive alerts via SMS? You will receive vital SMS alerts from the Rajmarg Yatra app using the cellphone number linked to your bank when you activate the pass. But there's a catch Motorists are required to pay toll charges to use India's national highways. However, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a new scheme offering an annual toll pass priced at Rs 3,000. This pass will allow private vehicles to pass through toll plazas operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Expressway (NE) network up to 200 times in a year. Notably, the scheme does not apply to toll booths on state highways. Who Benefits From The Scheme? The scheme is solely applicable to private or domestic vehicles and excludes commercial ones. The initiative has been well received by residents of Ambala in Haryana. Speaking to Local 18, Naveen Kumar Yadav expressed appreciation for the move. He regularly drives to Chandigarh with his family and said the toll costs add up quickly. The new pass, he added, would help him save both time and money. Another motorist praised the scheme, calling the Rs 3,000 annual pass a 'commendable initiative." He believes it will be especially useful for families who frequently travel by car. Buying a 2-wheeler in '26? Govt makes two helmets & this feature mandatory: Details
Govt makes two helmets & ABS mandatory from 2026. Starting January 2026, every new two-wheeler sold in India will need to come with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), no matter the engine size. Furthermore, dealerships will also have to provide two BIS-certified helmets with each vehicle, one for the rider and one for the pillion. This was announced recently by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways as part of its push to improve road safety. Right now, only bikes above 125cc are legally required to have ABS. Smaller two-wheelers are fitted with Combined Braking Systems (CBS) instead. With the new rule, even budget scooters and motorcycles will get ABS by default, offering better safety for all riders. Why is ABS important? But what is ABS and why is it important? Anti-lock Braking System is a feature that keeps your wheels from locking up during sudden braking. It helps maintain grip and control, especially on wet or uneven roads. Without ABS, a hard brake could send the bike sliding or flipping. With it, the system adjusts the brake pressure automatically, reducing the risk of a fall. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Royal Enfield Classic 650 Review: An Icon Just Got Bigger! | TOI Auto While the move will boost safety, it may also increase the price of some two-wheelers, especially entry-level bikes under 125cc. The extra cost of ABS hardware and two certified helmets could push up prices by a few thousand rupees. Speaking on the new helmet rule, Rajeev Kapur, MD of Steelbird Helmets and President of the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association of India, said: "With this regulation, approximately four crore BIS-certified helmets will now reach Indian roads every year, directly benefiting both riders and pillion riders. This will drastically reduce the circulation of substandard or fake helmets, which were previously being distributed by some showroom owners. Now, with OEMs mandated to supply genuine Real BIS-certified helmets, such unethical practices will be eliminated."
