Maruti Suzuki Baleno Bharat NCAP crash test: Why same car get different scores?

As standard, the Baleno comes with dual airbags, while the top-end variants come with six airbags. Check Offers Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the largest-selling premium hatchback in India that competes with rivals such as Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is priced between ₹ 6.70 lakh and ₹ 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom). The model was the best-selling premium hatchback in the country in FY25, clocking 167,161 units. Earlier this week, Baleno scored a four-star safety rating at the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP or BNCAP) crash test. Interestingly, the hatchback has scored a five-star safety rating as well at the BNCAP crash test. The same model garnering two different scores at the Bharat NCAP crash tests has left many people confused. If you, too, are feeling confused about the same car getting two different crash test ratings, here is a detailed explainer about the reason behind the Baleno receiving two different crash test safety ratings from the Bharat NCAP. Maruti Suzuki Baleno: Same car, two different stars The two different scores for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno are attributed to two different variants - one of them was equipped with two airbags, while the other was equipped with six airbags. Six airbags are not offered as a standard feature across the entire Baleno range, which is why Bharat NCAP tested two models, and they came with different scores. As part of Bharat NCAP crash tests, the assessments are done based on the performance of the cars across three sections - Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) and safety assist technologies. Maruti Suzuki Baleno is sold in four different trim choices - Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. While Sigma and Delta come equipped with only two frontal airbags, Zeta and Alpha trims come with six airbags. These two variants get dual front, driver side, co-driver side, left curtain and right curtain airbags. The premium hatchback scored four stars in the AOP category and three stars in the COP category. The Baleno with six airbags scored 26.52 points out of 32 in the AOP category. In the same category, the Baleno with two airbags scored 24.04 points out of 32. Both versions of Baleno garnered 34.81 points out of 49 in the COP category. Both versions of Baleno faced frontal offset deformable barrier test at a speed of 64 kmph, a side movable deformable barrier test at a speed of 50 kmph and a side pole impact test at a speed of 29 kmph. Finally, they were given star ratings from one to five on the basis of their performance across different crash tests. In the AOP category, both versions of the Baleno received 11.54 points out of 16 in the frontal offset deformable barrier test. However, the Baleno with six airbags scored 14.99 points out of 16 in the side movable deformable barrier test, as against 12.50 points by the version with two airbags. Four extra airbags, two on each side, helped the six-airbag equipped version perform better in the side movable deformable barrier test. While the number of airbags differs in the Baleno range on the basis of the trim, safety assist technologies like electronic stability control (ESC), pedestrian protection system and seatbelt reminders come as standard across the variants. Maruti Suzuki Baleno got dual scores in Bharat NCAP crash test. Here's why

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, one of India's popular premium hatchbacks, has secured two distinct safety ratings in the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) crash tests, reflecting differences in safety features across its variants. The results, released recently, highlight the impact of additional airbags on the vehicle's safety Baleno was tested in two configurations: one equipped with 2 airbags and another with 6 airbags. The key difference in the BNCAP scores stems from the enhanced safety features in the 6-airbag variant, particularly in adult occupant Occupant Protection (AOP) The 6-airbag variant scored 26.52 out of 32 points (82.88%), earning a 4-star 2-airbag variant scored 24.04 out of 32 points (74.13%), also securing a 4-star higher score for the 6-airbag variant is attributed to the inclusion of side and curtain airbags, which provide superior protection in side-impact and pole tests. Despite the improved score, the 6-airbag variant fell just short of the 27-point threshold required for a 5-star Occupant Protection (COP)Both variants performed identically in child occupant protection, scoring 34.81 out of 49 points, resulting in a 3-star rating. The additional airbags in the 6-airbag variant primarily enhance adult safety and have little impact on child protection metrics, which focus on child seat compatibility and restraint number of airbags in the Baleno varies depending on the variant, but essential safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a pedestrian protection system, and seatbelt reminders are offered as standard across the contrast, Maruti Suzuki's Dzire has made history by becoming the first sedan in India to earn a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP).The Dzire achieved an impressive 29.46 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 41.57 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection (COP).Both the All-New Dzire and the New Age Baleno—which received a 4-star rating under Bharat NCAP—are based on Suzuki's 5th-generation HEARTECT platform. They come equipped with advanced safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Program+ (ESP), ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist, a 360-degree camera, and Isofix mounts for child to Auto Today Magazine

In the child safety tests, the Baleno scored 16.81 out of 24 for how well it protected child dummies during crashes. The overall safety score for child occupants was 34.81 out of 49. In the test for an 18-month-old child using a rear-facing seat, the car scored 7.17 in the front crash and 4 in the side crash. For a 3-year-old using a forward-facing seat, the scores were 1.63 in the front crash and 4 in the side crash. This marks the Baleno as the second Maruti model to be tested under Bharat NCAP, alongside the Dzire, which scored a five-star rating. Maruti Dzire is first sedan in India to get 5-star BNCAP safety rating

Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday said its Dzire has become the first sedan in the country to receive a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), which was launched in 2023. BNCAP has so far tested at least 16 vehicles — all sport utility vehicles (SUVs) — under its crash safety evaluation programme, making the Dzire the first non-SUV to earn the top rating. Bharat NCAP follows globally benchmarked protocols and aims to raise safety awareness among Indian car buyers. The certification was presented by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. He said: 'It gives me immense pride to see made-in-India, high-volume mainstream cars achieve exemplary safety ratings under BNCAP. I congratulate Maruti Suzuki on securing a 5-star safety rating for the all-new Dzire.' In the same round of testing, Maruti's New Age Baleno received a 4-star rating. Gadkari lauded Maruti Suzuki's move to equip all its models with six airbags, calling it a 'significant stride' towards improving vehicle safety across segments. Maruti said it plans to equip all its passenger vehicles with six airbags as standard by the end of this year. Currently, 10 models — including the Alto K10, Swift, Brezza, and Grand Vitara — already offer six airbags across variants. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India, said: 'BNCAP brings to India stringent vehicle testing protocols that will help customers make informed decisions. We are honoured to receive this certification.' Takeuchi added that all 18 Maruti models are already equipped with the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as a standard feature — well ahead of regulatory requirements.
