AUT And Abbott Team Up To Tackle Concussions & Women's Health

New Zealand's leading sports research institute, based at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), has embarked on a multi-year collaboration with global healthcare technology company Abbott. This joint effort has potential to transform how sports injuries are treated in the future, especially for female athletes.
Under the collaboration, Abbott has installed the ARCHITECT® ci 4100 analyser, one of its Core Laboratory platforms, in AUT's SPRINZ biochemistry lab at AUT Millennium, a hub for many of New Zealand's high-performance sports organisations and Olympic athletes.
A Legacy of Innovation
AUT Professor of Human Performance Patria Hume, who played a key role in establishing the collaboration, describes the initiative as the start of a legacy, not just a research programme.
'The Abbott Core Laboratory platform will enable us to build a comprehensive database of women's health metrics, fostering long-term studies that will benefit future generations,' says Professor Hume. 'This is a collaborative effort, bringing together experts from various fields to tackle some of the most pressing health issues faced by women today. The technology will push the boundaries of what's possible in sports science and medical research.'
The installation of Abbott's diagnostics platform marks a revolutionary step in advancing brain and women's health research. The system allows for precise blood tests that were previously out of reach, enabling researchers to identify critical biomarkers for neurological and hormonal health.
'With this technology, we can uncover insights that will lead to early detection, better treatment options, and personalised care plans tailored to the unique needs of each woman,' says Professor Hume.
Addressing Concussion Challenges in Female Athletes
Research increasingly shows that female athletes face a higher risk of concussion and respond to brain trauma differently than males. Yet current diagnostic and treatment practices often fail to account for these differences.
'It's time we adopt approaches that address the unique challenges concussions pose to women,' says Beth McQuiston, M.D., Medical Director in Abbott's diagnostics business.
'Having worked in this field for years, I'm truly excited to see how new technologies, like Abbott's Core Laboratory instruments, are helping us make groundbreaking strides in this area. By screening for blood biomarkers released after a brain injury, we can quickly and accurately determine if a CT scan is necessary. This not only improves patient triage but also reduces unnecessary radiation exposure – it's a win for both patients and healthcare providers.'
AUT Professor of Psychology and Brain Health Alice Theadom, who also directs the TBI Network (Traumatic Brain Injury Network), highlights the significance of the partnership for advancing brain health research.
'There is exciting emerging evidence on the use of blood and hormone levels to detect physiological changes caused by brain injury,' says Professor Theadom.
'The availability of this instrument will position New Zealand at the forefront of new discoveries, revolutionising how we detect and treat these injuries. This collaborative programme brings together clinicians, community groups, and academics to drive clinically important discoveries in women's brain health.'
The AUT-Abbott partnership goes beyond concussion research. The team will also explore how vitamins (such as Vitamin D and B12) and neuroendocrine changes impact brain health – a first-of-its-kind initiative that has never been done before. This holistic approach will provide unprecedented insights into the factors influencing brain health and recovery.

The Shotover wastewater treatment plant has now discharged the equivalent of about 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools of effluent into the Shotover River and the consideration of its effects has yet to be assessed. The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) applied for retrospective resource consent from the Otago Regional Council (ORC) for its emergency measures, but the application has yet to be notified and no hearing date has been set. When the QLDC began its "short-term solution" on March 31 it said it was discharging about 12,000cum of wastewater a day, or the equivalent of just under five Olympic-sized swimming pools. That was 81 days ago. The ORC has said under the Resource Management Act its staff need to confirm the application is complete, decide if further information is needed and make a formal notification decision, despite the QLDC's request the application be publicly notified. Regular sampling is done so any impacts on the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers can be monitored and the data is publicly available. But the ORC website confirms "questions have been raised about the impact of the discharge on the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers and what role dilution plays". "Any decision on if this discharge is appropriate and on effects moving forward will be assessed through any consents and compliance processes." University of Otago freshwater scientist Associate Prof Marc Schallenberg said the issues raised were interesting, but warned as well the discharge was "risky business". "This is a very interesting topic," Prof Schallenberg said. "One of the reasons it is interesting is that almost nothing is known about the ecological health of large rivers like the Kawarau. "Because it is so difficult to sample large and fast-flowing rivers, we know very little about them." Typically, assessments were based on water quality without any understanding about the effects on periphyton, invertebrates, or fish. In a river such as the Kawarau, it seemed these ecological components were of little perceived value due to the nature of the river. "However, in terms of downstream drinking water use and recreation, the water quality (especially faecal contamination, pharmaceuticals, etc) is quite important." He said the issue was outside his personal area of expertise, but he supposed the mixing, or dilution, that was happening in the river would be quite rapid and thorough not far downstream from the Shotover confluence. "I guess that by the time it gets to AJ Hackett [Bungy Centre], the sewage will be quite diluted. "But the final concentration of contaminants will depend on the concentrations in the effluent and the amount of water available for dilution. "It's all a messy, risky business where there are downstream users."

Otago returns to top 200 in world university rankings

PHOTO: ODT FILES The University of Otago has returned to the top 200 in the QS World University Ranking for the first time since 2022. Otago rose to 197th in the rankings, following last year's placing of 214th, finishing with an overall score of 55.8. It was one of four New Zealand universities to improve its ranking. More than 1500 institutions in 106 countries are ranked, based on measures including a survey of academic reputation, staff to student ratios and citations of lecturers' research. The University of Auckland was New Zealand's highest-ranked institution in 65th place, with the other seven universities ranked between 197 and 410. Massey, Victoria and AUT also improved their rankings. Considered as a university system, New Zealand's universities performed well, the ranking said. "Among countries and territories with at least eight institutions featured in this year's rankings, New Zealand's overall average score of 51 puts the country fifth in the world for the overall quality of its higher education," it said. Only Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland had better-performing university systems. The ranking placed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) first for the 14th consecutive year followed by Imperial College London and Stanford University. Other ranking systems last year placed New Zealand universities lower in their league tables. In the THE ranking they ranged from 152nd to a band of 501-600th place, while in the Academic Ranking of World Universities they ranged from a top placing in the 201-300 band to a bottom placing of 801-900. - APL/RNZ
