MC Alger seal back-to-back Algeria titles despite final-day stalemate
Published: Sunday, 22 June 2025
MC Alger clinched a ninth Algerian Ligue 1 crown – and a second in succession – after a goalless draw with already-relegated Nejm Mogra on the final day of the 2024-25 season at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers on Saturday night.
The point was enough to lift Khaled Ben Yahia's side to 58 points, two clear of bitter rivals JS Kabylie, who leapfrogged CR Belouizdad into second thanks to their own victory elsewhere.
It means MC Alger stand alone as the country's third-most decorated league club, trailing only Kabylie (14 titles) and Belouizdad (10).
Knowing a draw would guarantee the championship, the capital club controlled possession from the outset yet found Nejm Mogra's deep-lying defence obstinate.
Early openings for Guinean forward Mohamed Salio Bangura were repelled, and a series of set-pieces from captain Sofiane Bendebka sailed narrowly wide.
Nejm, condemned to the amateur ranks after finishing 15th on 31 points, rarely ventured forward but almost stunned the home crowd when forward Brahim Aït Lahcen flashed a half-volley past the post midway through the first half.
Ben Yahia introduced Burkinabe midfielder Mohamed Zograna for Larbi Thabti at the break, later sending on Abdellah Boucharit and striker Hamza Bayezid in search of a breakthrough.
The reshuffle, however, produced more territory than clear chances; Bangura's looping header in the 78th minute was the closest MC came, goalkeeper Samir Rahmani clawing the effort away.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among more than 45,000 'Chnaoua', who unfurled banners commemorating the club's 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs triumph – still their solitary continental success.
After falling to Orlando Pirates in last season's TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-finals, MC Alger have vowed to mount a deeper run next term.
Chairman Mohamed Hakim Medane confirmed the board will 'strengthen two key positions' during the close season to help Ben Yahia's squad cope with domestic and African commitments.
For Nejm Mogra, relegation ends a brief two-year stay in the top flight, while third-placed Belouizdad qualify for CAF inter-club competition via the league for a sixth straight season. Key numbers MC Alger – 58 pts
JS Kabylie – 56 pts
CR Belouizdad – 55 pts
Titles in Algerian Ligue 1: JS Kabylie – 14 CR Belouizdad – 10 MC Alger – 9
MC Alger will return to action in late August when they begin their Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round.

Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall
Taarek Refaat A tragic accident overshadowed MC Algiers' (Mouloudia Club d'Alger) celebration of its ninth Algerian Ligue 1 title on Saturday, after a fan died and 11 others were injured in a fall from the upper stands of the July 5 Stadium. MC Algiers secured its second consecutive league title with a goalless draw against NC Magra on the final day of the season. However, the joy quickly turned into sorrow when several supporters fell from the southern upper stands shortly after the final whistle and before the championship trophy ceremony could begin. — abd ennacer el bar/عبد الناصر البار (@nasronasro1988) June 21, 2025 The Algerian Civil Protection agency released a statement confirming the incident: 'One death has been recorded and 11 others sustained injuries. Emergency medical teams provided on-site assistance and transported the injured to hospital for further care.' The statement also noted that a mobile medical unit was set up inside the stadium and that ten ambulances were dispatched from the National Training and Intervention Unit. Ceremony Postponed, Mourning Nationwide In response to the incident, the title ceremony was postponed as emergency responders secured the area. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune publicly mourned the deceased fan, expressing his condolences to the family and the MC Algiers community via social media. The deceased has not yet been officially identified, and an investigation is reportedly underway to determine the cause of the fall. Witnesses at the scene said the crowd had surged forward in celebration, leading to a partial collapse or slip near the barrier of the upper tier. A Night of Mixed Emotions For MC Algiers, the title marks a historic achievement — the club's ninth national league championship and a rare back-to-back win — but the emotional high has been deeply muted by the tragedy. League officials, players, and fans have expressed their sorrow, calling for improved safety measures in stadiums and crowd management during major events. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is expected to issue a statement and may open a review of stadium protocols for large-scale fixtures. read more 2 Most Inspirational Green Projects in Egypt AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT to Strive over Viewership Tonight Egypt Marks 70th Anniv. of 2011 Revolution, National Police Day In Depth: WWE NXT Halloween Havoc In Depth: AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT Tuesday Viewership Strive Videos & Features WATCH: Egyptians Break Ramadan Fasts in Matariya Videos & Features GrEEk Campus Hosts Jobzella Fifth Career Fair Videos & Features 3 Iconic Ramadan Songs of All Times Videos & Features Top 4 Destinations to Visit in Upper Egypt News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand
