Alaska Highway reopened after nearby wildfire forced closure near Fort Nelson, B.C.

The stretch of the Alaska Highway near Fort Nelson, B.C., that closed Monday due to a nearby wildfire has reopened to single lane traffic.
Drive BC announced the update in a post around 9:30 p.m., saying the status could change quickly depending on wildfire activity.
The BC Wildfire Service says the blaze is about 26 square kilometres in size and is burning out of control about 10 kilometres northeast of Summit Lake.
It is one of two 'wildfires of note' in the province and prompted the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality to issue an evacuation alert on Monday for the Tetsa River Area.
The wildfire service's latest update says the so-called Summit Lake fire 'experienced significant overnight growth' between Sunday and Monday and 'continues to display aggressive fire behaviour,' growing towards Highway 97.
It says the single-lane alternating traffic is now open between kilometres 580 and 589, but notes that visibility is limited in the area.
The service says there are more than 70 wildfires burning in the province as of Tuesday morning, 50 per cent of which are considered out of control.

St. Catharines nightclub loses liquor licence following April shooting
A St. Catharines nightclub that was the site of a shooting that wounded a 16-year-old in April has had its liquor licence suspended. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario says that it has issued an order to temporarily suspend the liquor licence belonging to Club 88 and to begin the process of permanently revoking the licenced. The decision comes after an April 27 shooting inside the club that left a 16-year-old Ajax boy with non-life threatening injuries. The AGCO said that while police have since made criminal arrests in connection with the shooting, it has been in the process of conducting its own 'regulatory investigation.' In a news release, the AGCO said that 'despite repeated attempts to confirm the identities of those involved in the club's ownership and operations, investigators encountered a prolonged pattern of inconsistent and contradictory information.' The release notes that the suspension of the club's licence is necessary 'to protect the public interest and compel accountability.: 'Honesty and transparency are absolute requirements for those who hold a liquor licence in Ontario. When ownership is hidden, accountability disappears, putting public safety at risk. We will always act decisively to uphold the integrity of licensees and protect Ontarians,' the AGCO's Chief Executive Officer and Registrar Karin Schnarr said in the release.

Unconscious person found after Longueuil fire

Longueuil police (SPAL) says it received a call from the fire department about the fire at 7 a.m. Monday at a single-storey home on Viger Street in the Saint-Hubert borough. The force says it found the two people, one unconscious and the other suffering from severe smoke inhalation. That person was treated by paramedics, and their life is not considered to be in danger. A third person who was also in the home is being interviewed by police. Officials say they have yet to determine what caused the fire. A security perimeter has been established to allow investigators to canvass the scene.

Convicted murderer escapes prison in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que.
Social Sharing A 62-year-old convicted murderer is on the lam after escaping the minimum-security unit at Archambault Institution in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., about 40 kilometres northwest of Montreal. Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says Richard Plourde was not accounted for at the multi-level security federal institution during the 11 p.m. count on June 22. He is currently serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, according to CSC. Plourde stands five feet 10 inches tall and weighs 231 pounds. He has a fair complexion, brown eyes and grey hair. He has a tattoo of a skull bone and hand on his right shoulder, a rose on his abdomen and the letters R.P. on his right arm. Anyone who has information on Plourde's whereabouts is asked to contact the police.
