Keir Starmer's chipmunk incident

Telegrapha day ago

A chipmunk came close to menacing Sir Keir Starmer's leg just as Robert Peston, ITV's political editor, was grilling the Prime Minister in an outdoors interview in the shadow of Canada's Rocky Mountains at the G7 on Tuesday. 'Can't you do something about this?', whispered an adviser to a security guard. Before any drastic action could be taken, the chipmunk sloped away. Peston insists his questioning had nothing to do with it.
Angie's near-miss
Angela Rayner was so excited to be chairing this week's Cabinet in Sir Keir Starmer's absence that she nearly ran over Larry, left, No 10's resident cat when her Government car driver had to brake sharply. Rayner then texted her boss. 'All good while you were away,' she told Starmer, alongside an emoji. Is 17-year-old Larry running out of lives?
Vine's lamps
Journalist Sarah Vine spoke to me on Chopper's Political Podcast this week about the 'unpleasant' experience of being involved in the 2009 MPs' expenses scandal. I was The Daily Telegraph journalist who had contacted her then MP husband Michael Gove over his claims for £134 elephant lamps, a £493 Manchu cabinet and a £331 Chinon armchair from Oka, David Cameron's mother-in-law's shop.
Vine, whose memoir How Not To Be A Politician's Wife was launched on Thursday, said the experience was 'very, very unpleasant'.
She added: 'I've got the lamps. I might auction them one day for charity. What do you think?' Great idea.
Macca's pants
Writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie visited the home of Beatles' friend and biographer Hunter Davies for his new book, With A Little Help From Their Friends. Davies gave Maconie a tour of his Beatles books and other Fab Four memorabilia. 'At one point he took a Ziploc bag from a filing cabinet with what appeared to be a pair of Y-fronts in it: 'Would you like to see Paul McCartney's underpants? He left them behind in the villa when he and Linda stayed with us in Portugal'.'
Boris's birthday boat
Happy birthday to former Daily Telegraph columnist Boris Johnson who turned 61 on Thursday. The former prime minister is marking his big day today with a trip down the River Thames, three men in a boat-style. All the Johnsons have been invited, including his sister Rachel who will meet Boris's month-old daughter Poppy for the first time. Baby on board!
Brandreth's other job
Cuddly jumper wearing polymath Gyles Brandreth, 77, has barely any downtime. 'There's not a week, no exaggeration, when I'm not asked to be the voiceover on one of these funeral plan ads', he says: 'This is partly because I host on an annual basis the British Funeral Directors' Awards – the big prize at the end of the night is the lifetime achievement award for 'thinking outside the box'.'
Trump's golf challenge
Former PMs David Cameron and Theresa May, UK ambassador Peter Mandelson and US ambassador Warren Stephens helped Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy mark the restoration of George Washington's statue, in London's Trafalgar Square this week. 'We are delighted to be able to welcome the President on his historic second state visit to the United Kingdom,' she said. 'Although we are all having to brush up on our golf skills'. Trump is due here in September and has a handicap of 2.8. Better get practising Lisa.
O'Flynn's legacy
Mourners gathered at Mortlake Crematorium, south London on Monday for the funeral of the journalist and ex-Ukip MEP Patrick O'Flynn who has died aged 59. Peter Hill, O'Flynn's former editor at the Daily Express, revealed how O'Flynn persuaded him to launch an unlikely campaign for Britain to leave the EU in 2011. 'It was the perfect newspaper campaign,' Hill recalled. 'It wouldn't cost any money, and it stood no chance of success, which meant we could return to it at any time on slow news days.' How did it go?
Illicit Nigel
Nigel Farage is puzzled that he was voted sexiest MP by a dating site for married people looking for extramarital affairs. 'I find this completely and utterly and totally extraordinary,' he told GB News' viewers. 'Could it be that people [on that site] want naughty people, or could it be the clip of me when I was in the jungle on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Here?''

Anne Burrell 'struggled' with fame before her shocking death as insider reveals she 'wasn't happy'

Anne Burrell had a zest for life that endeared her to Food Network viewers. She was sadly found dead in her home earlier this week, and speculation about the circumstances of her death is rampant. Anne reportedly suffered cardiac arrest, and her body was surrounded by pills. Now, a friend of hers is opening up about Anne's larger-than-life personality and what her plans were at the time of her death. 'She made everything fun. She was a true force of nature,' a friend of Burrell's told Page Six. 'Her personality was so big,' they said, noting that there was a dark side to her fame. Anne rose to fame on the Food Network alongside Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay and Guy Fieri but for her, that spotlight cast a long shadow. 'I know she kind of struggled — once she was on TV and was on her way to be a TV celebrity chef,' the friend told Page Six. 'She was famous, she was doing the food and wine circuit stuff. She was busy — I kind of felt like she wasn't totally happy,' the friend added. 'People with big personalities sometimes mask things.' Anne had plans to expand her horizons and try her hand at acting and was even taking improv classes before her tragic passing at 55. She appeared on Tori Spelling's Misspelling podcast back in March and said: 'Interestingly, I just started taking acting classes. I started yesterday, actually... It's like an improv for actors' class. 'I got there and it's like eight people in the class. I'm the oldest one. Every other person has like, "Oh, I have a master's in fine arts in theater."' Burrell showed off her self-awareness and sense of humor that her fans were familiar with as she joked about the age gap between she and her fellow students. Now a friend of hers is opening up about Anne's larger than life personality and what her plans were at the time of her death She said: 'I'm like, "okay, I've never taken an acting class. I don't know, this is new to me." 'I wonder if these delightful and super talented kids look at me and they're like, "What's this old lady doing here?"' The television personality had taken a break from her show Worst Cooks In America for season 28 which baffled many fans and Spelling, 52, asked at the time what led her to that decision. Burrell answered: 'I can cook, yes, I can do TV, but also, what else? I've got more to do in my life, I feel like.' She also admitted that she was just 'dipping my toe' when it came to the pivot to acting. Burrell explained: 'I feel very excited about it. I've got a few other things that I'm working on as well, which I'm not quite ready to share yet. Hopefully, exciting [are] things coming.' Trump's quiet bid for Iran talks failed as 'nobody could get Ayatollah on phone'

Trump had reportedly been working with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to try and secure talks between US and Iranian officials in Istanbul this week Donald Trump's bid to quietly arrange a meeting with Iran was scuppered after nobody could get the Ayatollah on the phone, it has been reported. According to US news site Axios, Trump had been working with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to try and secure talks between US and Iranian officials in Istanbul this week. ‌ But Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, is in hiding and couldn't be reached to approve the talks. ‌ It comes amid reports B-2 stealth bombers had left a US air base - apparently heading towards Guam or Diego Garcia. The B-2 Spirit is the only aircraft capable of delivering the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, also known as the bunker buster bomb. Trump told reporters on Friday that he is giving Iran a "period of time" to come to the table - and that he'd make a decision on whether to join strikes on Tehran's nuclear capabilities in the next two weeks. "I'm giving 'em a period of time. We're gonna see what that period of time is. And I would say two weeks would be the maximum," he said at an airfield in New Jersey, en route to his Bedminster golf club. He's set to come back from the resort this evening, to return to the White House Situation Room for more briefings on the conflict. The phone call with Erdogan reportedly took place last Monday, when Trump was meeting G7 leaders in Canada. ‌ Axios reports Trump agreed to send Vice President JD Vance and White House envoy Steve Witkoff - and possibly travel to Turkey himself to meet with Iran's leadership. Talks between European ministers and Iran's top diplomat failed to stop a fresh round of strikes today. Friday's talks, which aimed at de-escalating the fighting between the two adversaries, lasted for four hours in Geneva, but failed to produce a breakthrough. ‌ European officials expressed hope for future negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he was open to further dialogue but stressed Tehran wasn't interested in negotiating with the US while Israel continued attacking. A senior adviser for Khamenei, vowed in a social media post Saturday to make the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency 'pay' once the war with Israel is over. Ali Larijani's threat comes as IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has become a major target for many Iranian officials who say his conflicting statements about the status of Iran's nuclear program incited the Israeli surprise attack last week. Grossi told the United Nations' Security Council Friday that while Iran has the material to build a nuclear bomb, it appears they have no plans to do so.

Justin Bieber sparks concern with cryptic ‘manipulation' & ‘flirting' posts hours after Hailey ditches wedding ring

JUSTIN Bieber has sparked alarm among fans after sharing a cryptic post about "manipulation and flirting" after his wife Hailey ditched her wedding ring. The Canadian pop star, 31, posted a video on social media which sees an unknown man miming along to a very aggressive rant. 7 7 7 It is not clear who Justin is aiming the clip at but he has shared it to his Instagram Stories in the wake of Hailey taking off her wedding ring. In the footage, the man fumes, "How about you take your manipulation tactics and your b****-ass flirting and all you fake-ass time-wasting and shove it right up your mama's throat! "Now what?!" The video was among a slew of clips Justin has shared to his Instagram Stories. Another shows a different man saying, "I want to remind you that not everybody hates you. Just a lot of people do. "A lot of people despise you. A lot of people really hate you. "But not everybody hates you. People in Tasmania don't hate you. But that's just because they don't know you." Taking to his main IG grid, Justin posted a grainy close-up selfie of his face, with only his diamond nose stud and chunky earring on show. The singer captioned it, "Yall think the business is a joke. But your drunk 🤬." Fans have been quick to reply, with many asking Justin if he is okay. One follower said, "Old enough to be his mom. I see a young man struggling." Another added, "Don't you give up 🙏." A third wrote, "What are these posts Justin, are you okay bro?" And someone else penned, "I never thought this day would come, but unfortunately Hailey no longer wears her wedding ring. It's so sad to see a family falling apart." NO RING This week, Hailey was seen without her wedding ring on separate occasions while in New York City. As divorce rumors reach fever pitch following Justin's recent bizarre behavior, Hailey did very little to hide her bare finger. Stepping out for breakfast at The Commerce Inn in the West Village, Hailey put her left hand on display and the ring was missing. Later that evening, the Rhode Beauty founder's $500,000 ring was also noticeably absent when she headed to Chez Fifi on the Upper East Side with fellow models Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse. The beauty billionaire deliberately made sure her bare ring finger was visible to photographers for the entire duration of both of her outings. Meanwhile, sources have said mom-of-one Hailey has "grown tired of looking after two children". A source told RadarOnline that she has "reached her limit" and is now focusing on the couple's baby son Jack Blues, 10 months, and her career. The insider told the publication: "Hailey has reached her limit. She's been covering for Justin for years, but now she's focused on her own life — her career, her son, and her sanity." Discussions of Justin being placed in a conservatorship by Hailey have now been raised following his increasingly concerning behavior. A legal expert detailed to The U.S. Sun how Hailey would have to prove three points to carry out what has been called a "nuclear" option. 7 7 7
