‘Bringer of joy' and choreographer Matthew Bourne earns City of London freedom

The recognition was for his achievements in contemporary dance, during a career spanning more than four decades, which has seen him enliven productions of Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands and Nutcracker.
At the ceremony at the Guildhall on Thursday, Sir Matthew, 65, said: 'As a born Londoner, I am particularly thrilled to be receiving the freedom today.

'As the proud son of two children of the Blitz, who lived just streets away from each other in Walthamstow E17, I have made London my home for my entire life.
'It has been my playground, my workplace and the inspiration for many of the works that I have made throughout my career, including Cinderella, Oliver!, Mary Poppins, and even Swan Lake.
'I am deeply honoured and grateful, and would like to thank Mark Lucraft and Fiona Adler for kindly nominating me for the freedom.'

Sir Matthew has been an artistic director of Adventures in Motion Pictures, and dance company New Adventures, which he founded in 2002 and which specialises in contemporary dance.
His productions include The Car Man, a reinterpretation of composer Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen, Romeo And Juliet, Cinderella, Play Without Words, and The Red Shoes.
For about three decades he has worked with theatre producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, and Sir Matthew has brought his flair to musicals such as Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady and Oliver!

Deputy policy chairman of the City of London Corporation, James Thomson, said: 'As well as a major exporter of British dance to the rest of the world, Matthew is also the bringer of much joy, with the ability to leave people walking on air as they file out of the theatre.
'He is at the top of his game and is a very worthy recipient of the Freedom of the City of London, and I offer Matthew my warmest congratulations today, which will be echoed by his many millions of admirers.'
Sir Matthew was named the individual with the most Olivier Awards in 2020, when he received a ninth win.
He also has two Tony Awards, for directing and choreographing Swan Lake, and received a special Olivier Award in 2019.
Mr Lucraft said: 'Matthew's consummate skill for reimagining storytelling through dance is evident, not just by how audiences are mesmerised, exhilarated and moved by his productions, featuring troupes of supremely gifted dancers, but also by his hugely impressive collection of national and international awards.'
In 2001 Sir Matthew was made an OBE, and in 2016 was knighted in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year Honours, for services to dance.
The tradition of the freedom of the city is believed to date back to 1237.
Recent recipients include comedian Sir Lenny Henry, theatre owner and producer Sir Cameron, and Lady Mary Peters, who won an Olympic gold medal in the athletics pentathlon in 1972.

The pair never spoke to each other again after their backstage bust-up when they played the Ugly Sisters in the Cinderella pantomime in Brighton in January 2008, in which Kim pushed Aggie to the floor. ‌ The 69-year-old TV personality - who co-presented Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House? with the Queen of Clean from 2003 until 2009 - regrets not burying the hatchet before Kim died on Monday (16.06.25) after a short illness at the age of 83. ‌ In an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper, Aggie said: "I have no memory of the last time I spoke to Kim. "It was years and years ago. I did used to dream about Kim but I never actually saw her in real life again. "The dreams were mostly about us making up and being friendly again." Aggie remembered: "We did our scene but when we came out at the other side, Kim was furious. She pushed me. She actually pushed me so hard that I fell over. I lost it then. I really, really lost it with her. ‌ "She went off to her dressing room and she was crying her eyes out. "The lead dancer was being made up to take her part because she was refusing to go back on stage, and this was an audience of hundreds of people. "The interval had to be extended. But at the last minute, Kim stormed out of her dressing room and shouted, 'I'm going back out there!' ‌ "It was so obvious that she had been crying." Aggie paid tribute to Kim on Tuesday (17.06.25) and said praised her "incredible strength". She told The Sun: "Kim was a tormented soul, but now she's finally at peace. Aggie MacKenzie on 'awful' backstage scuffle with Kim Woodburn that started feud

The late Kim Woodburn's How Clean Is Your House? co-star Aggie MacKenzie has spoken about the reason behind the feud between the pair. Woodburn died earlier this week aged 83, following a short illness, and MacKenzie, 69, subsequently paid tribute to her former co-star. 'Kim was a tormented soul, but now she's finally at peace. We clashed often,' the statement provided to Metro read. 'Behind the fierce persona was deep pain and incredible strength. She survived because she had to. I hope she's resting now. She was an unforgettable woman.' The co-stars garnered national fame for their innovative Channel 4 cleaning show, How Clean Is Your House? which ran from 2003 to 2009 – but were beset by long-standing feud rumours since professionally parting ways over 16 years ago. After the grime-fighting reality show came to end, both hinted in various interviews that all was not well behind the scenes. MacKenzie has now spoken about the reason behind their feud, saying it dates back to an angry altercation with Woodburn that drove a professional wedge between the pair. The now-yoga teacher told The Mirror about a fallout behind the scenes of a Cinderella pantomime in Brighton back in January 2008 – in which the dirt-busting duo played the Ugly Stepsisters – that effectively ended their professional relationship. MacKenzie recalled Woodburn missing her cue in the theatre, so she tapped her on the shoulder to remind her and then they went on for their scene – yet when they came off stage MacKenzie said Woodburn was 'furious'. She told the publication: 'She pushed me. She actually pushed me so hard that I fell over. I lost it then. I really really lost it with her. 'The whole thing kind of blew up then. She went off to her dressing room and she was crying her eyes out. She was really upset and I was really upset – I was so furious.' The interval was extended until Woodburn finally agreed to go back on stage, MacKenzie said. 'It was awful,' she continued. 'After all of that I was just done. It felt like she had kind of crushed me. The disrespect was so much and I knew that I couldn't actually continue being civil anymore without an apology.' More Trending MacKenzie went on to say she had never received an apology from Woodburn, adding: 'I don't think that Kim knew how to apologise to anyone. 'She was a very complex person. Essentially, she probably had no confidence, she probably deep down hated herself, and so in order to survive she had to put on a big front to keep herself protected and to keep people away.
