Track-ready BMW M2 ditches S58 straight 6 for 4-cylinder engine
BMW has whipped the wraps off the M2 Racing, a track-ready version of the Bavarian brand's venerable performance-focused compact coupé designed for private racing teams.

Positioned as an 'entry-level' racer for customer racing outfits, BMW M's latest M2 Racing is based on the current M2. Yet, as opposed to employing the latter M car's (353kW/600N.m) S58 3l turbocharged inline-six, the track-focused model is equipped with the Bavarian brand's 2l turbocharged four-pot.
The B48 unit produces 230kW and 420N.m of torque, sent to the road via a seven-speed, ZF-sourced transmission. As a reminder, the M2's six-pot is coupled with BMW's eight-speed M Steptronic unit. The German marque's motorsport department claims these figures are good to allow for a top speed exceeding 270km/h.

While down on power compared with the M Steptronic-equipped M2, it is worth noting that the race-ready variant weighs considerably less; tipping the scales at a claimed 1 498kg — a saving of 232kg. This has been achieved thanks to the fitment of several lightweight items, including a carbon-fibre roof. The M2 Racing is brought to a halt by a set of standard-fitment M Compound brakes, replete with M-specific brake pads, front and rear, and cooling setup. The callipers are housed within 18-inch forged alloy rims, wrapped in Goodyear rubber. Further mechanical revisions include upgrades to the chassis and fitment of a KW suspension arrangement, replete with adjustable fore and aft anti-roll bars.

So, how much can you expect to pay for the M2 Racing? In short, €98 000, which, at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate, translates to just over R2 060 000, making it around R500 000 more expensive than the M car it is based on.

Volvo's Electric EX30 Cross Country confirmed for SA
Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the EX30 Cross Country will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2025. Built on the standard model, this will serve as a tougher, more rugged counterpart. Other design tweaks help the Cross Country stand out from the standard EX30. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.' The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030. JAC unveils limited-edition T9 Hunter bakkie for SA market only
JAC Motors South Africa has just unveiled a new, limited-edition version of its T9 Hunter bakkie for the local market following a record-breaking endurance test at Gerotek. Not so long ago, Chinese automaker JAC embarked on setting a new record, involving a gruelling 24-hour endurance challenge, where the T9 bakkie was pushed far beyond typical road limits. The challenge, held at the Gerotek Testing Facility in Pretoria, saw a T9 2l CTi cover 4 084 km at an average speed of 170.1km/h over the period. This distance broke the previous 15-year-old record for commercial vehicles held by Isuzu. To celebrate this accomplishment, JAC is producing an exclusive run of only 24 T9 Hunter units. Each of these special bakkies will be individually numbered and will receive unique upgrades over the standard T9, including enhanced performance and comfort features. While full details are still under wraps, this limited production run is clearly designed to offer buyers a tangible piece of the T9's track success. Under the bonnet, the T9 Hunter retains the potent powertrain used in the record-breaking test (which is a stock, factory unit). This means a 2l intercooled turbo-diesel engine that generates 144kW of power and 487N.m of torque. Power is delivered through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Indeed, T9 sales have seen a nearly 28% increase from January to May 2025 compared with the same period last year, while the popular T8 has surged by a massive 140%. Driving impressions: Why the BMW X3 20d xDrive M Sport stands out in the SUV market
The BMW X3 is a crucial mid-sized SUV for the Munich-based company and remains one of its top sellers and is also the most popular model in South Africa. Recently I was on the N1 driving to Johannesburg when I passed three trucks carrying proudly made in South Africa vehicles. There's a tinge of pride knowing that a load of Nissan Navaras, Ford Rangers and BMW X3s are on their way to foreign lands, the fact that they're on trucks and not on rail for reasons we all know notwithstanding. I happened to be testing the BMW X3 20d xDrive M Sport at the time and knew that the new owners would be well pleased. The X3 is a crucial mid-sized SUV for the Munich-based company and remains one of its top sellers and is also the most popular model in South Africa. With its overall refinement it's not difficult to understand why. Exterior Now in its fourth iteration and first launched in 2003, it has aged well, and as the generations have progressed, it has grown considerably in size, so much so that a friend that had the second generation years ago hardly recognised it. It's taken a while, but the large distinctive kidney grill seems to be less polarising than when it first saw the light and it actually suits this year's Car of the Year. Because it's such an important model for the brand they have tinkered too much with the exterior. It now sports more angular lines and what BMW calls a monolithic appearance and while personally I prefer the previous generation's look, the new X3 is one of those cars that look better in the metal than in pictures. The rear sports a flush-mounted window with a long roof spoiler and under the flared wheel arches it stands on attractive 19-inch alloys. Engine The BMW four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine stands out as one of the best motors ever made and in the X3 produces 145kW and 400Nm coupled to a 48V mild hybrid system adding an additional 8kW and 25Nm for short bursts. It's connected to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission driving all four wheels. Interior As you would expect, the interior is very much a glass screen and premium affair with an abundance of illuminated surfaces. While it looks pretty cool, especially at night in the different driving modes, I can't help thinking that it comes across as one of those flashing disco-type speakers sold at the China Mall. I mean, is a flashing red light bar across the dash when the hazard lights are in use really necessary? Regular touchpoints and plastic bits are covered with recycled materials which look like they'll stand the test of time, especially since the X3 is likely to be a family's main mode of transport. The door-mounted ventilation controls, however, felt flimsy and spoiled an otherwise well cocooned and solid cabin. Fitted with BMW Operating System 9, the infotainment system though is still a bit clumsy and not particularly user friendly. It's not the most intuitive system with most settings including the air conditioning requiring some form of double tap to get to the right menu. It's mitigated somewhat with the iDrive system with QuickSelect that allows functions to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu or using your voice to adjust certain functions. Fortunately the volume can still be adjusted via a dial.
