Vermillion saplings to be planted Varanasi as tribute to Op Sindoor
Varanasi: As part of a special initiative by forest department, modelled as a tribute to
Operation Sindoor
, saplings of sindoor (vermillion) tree will be planted across Varanasi district this year.
Ganga Task Force Varanasi is the nodal agency for this initiative, especially at the Shaurya Jungle site.
The tree plantation mega campaign for 2025 in Varanasi will commence on Jul 1 and continue till Independence Day.
A meeting was held on Monday at office of the forest department under the chairmanship of Ravi Kumar Singh, Varanasi Circle forest conservator, to review preparations for the campaign. The meeting was attended by divisional forest officer, Swati and representatives of social and non-governmental organisations.
Singh said that in addition to the plantation campaign, World Yoga Day, World Nature Conservation Day, World Tiger Day and Jungle Festival would be celebrated with active participation from attendees, NGOs and public.
He said as in previous years, this year too, forest department initiated a tree plantation project based on a special theme, which includes establishment of specific forests for protection of planted trees, such as Atal Van, Ekta Van, Eklavya Van, Oxy Van, Shaurya Van, Gopal Van, Triveni Van, Heritage Tree Garden, Sacred Stream Plantation Express, Sahjan Bhandara, Food Forest, as well as Gram Van, Mitra Van, Shakti Van, Yuva Van and Balvan.
Under Sahjan Bhandara scheme, Varanasi forest department will this year provide free saplings for environmental conservation.
The meeting was attended by members of Srijan Social Institution, Rotary Club, Wildlife Trust of India, Ganga Task Force, Indian Wildlife Institute, Young India CII, Lok Bharati, Cyan Foundation, Bheera Foundation, Brihaspati Foundation, FPO West India, Varun Seva Trust and Namami Gange Ganga Vichar Manch.

Training prog for civil defence volunteers kicks off in UT

Home secretary Mandip Brar emphasized the importance of proactive preparedness, saying, "What truly defines a city is not just how it responds to a disaster, but how prepared it is before the disaster strikes." Kataria urged citizens to embrace the spirit of responsibility, resilience, and readiness, encouraging enthusiastic participation and execution of duties when needed. Volunteers took a solemn pledge, echoing the civil defence motto: "Working for the benefit of all." Among the many inspired citizens is Monika Thakur, a resident of Sector 20, who discovered the programme through Instagram. Driven by a sense of duty, she stepped forward to contribute to the safety and security of her city.

PUC centres mandatory at all petrol pumps of Swachh city

Failure to comply will result in punitive action. Also, a rigorous campaign will be launched to inspect fitness certificates of commercial vehicles, unfit ones will face strict action. The directive came during a meeting of district-level monitoring and implementation committee chaired by collector Asheesh Singh. The collector emphasised the need for a joint action plan and its effective implementation by all departments to improve air quality. As decided, strict action will be taken against industrial units causing pollution. Coal-operated industrial units have been directed to shift to PNG within a stipulated time, else strict action will be taken. Unfit vehicles and those without proper PUC certificates will be targeted. Singh stressed that fitness certificates must not be issued without thorough inspection of vehicles. He also directed that PUC certificates should be portal-based, ensuring transparency and accuracy. Action will be taken against PUC operators issuing offline certificates without proper checks. The collector said that strict action would be taken against open burning of biomass and garbage. Besides, hotspot areas with high dust levels will be identified for mechanical sweeping and regular water sprinkling. "Continuous monitoring will be maintained to prevent stubble burning in fields around urban and rural areas. Challans will be issued for violations. It was reported that effective action already took place against stubble burning, with 25 FIRs registered and fines exceeding Rs 18 lakh imposed on 837 individuals," he said.

Plan to give saplings to farmers, students to ensure nurturing
Varanasi: Before the annual mega plantation drive begins on Jul 1, with a target of planting 16.97 lakh saplings in the district during monsoon, all departments have been asked to focus on finalising strategy for post-plantation survival. One of the major components of this strategy will be providing saplings of fruit trees to farmers and students to encourage them to plant and nurture the saplings on their land. While discussing plans for success of the proposed plantation drive with officials of all departments concerned at a meeting on Wednesday, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar assigned the task to district plantation committee, district environment committee and district Ganga committee to keep focus on ensuring post-plantation survival, as it will serve the actual purpose of the drive. After divisional forest officer Swati informed the DM that the department's nursery currently has more than 30 lakh saplings against the district target of planting 19,97,520 saplings under Plantation Drive 2025 in monsoon of 2025, the DM instructed all departments to provide at the earliest their sapling demand letters according to their respective targets to the forest department office.
