New steel tariffs mixed bag for Indian companies making in US
Mumbai: While the US government's decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminium has led to renewed uncertainty, it is likely to be a mixed bag for domestic companies with a manufacturing presence in the US.
The Donald Trump-led US government is set to double tariffs on the import of steel and aluminium to 50% from Wednesday. International media reports suggest that the move is aimed to protect workers in the US as the proposed takeover of US Steel by Nippon Steel could receive an approval soon. While most of the steel produced in India is consumed locally, higher tariffs in the US may lead to steel being dumped in other regions, including India, which could impact prices in the domestic market.
JSW Steel
, which has a steel manufacturing facility in Ohio in the US, saw its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) loss narrow sequentially in the March quarter helped by an improvement in sales realisations. At its Plate and Pipe Mill in Texas, the company's EBITDA rose quarter-on-quarter, also helped by higher realisations. Both units also saw an improvement in their capacity utilisations in the March quarter compared to the December quarter, and the management was confident of the performance improving further.

"Volumes have picked up, the prices have improved, and we do expect that going into this year, we should see positive contributions from overseas, especially US," Swayam Saurabh, chief financial officer of JSW Steel, said on a call to analysts recently.
The Ohio unit produced 810,000 tonnes of steel in fiscal 2025, accounting for around 3% of the total crude steel produced by the company. "The company will see a positive impact, but it will be very marginal, so not significant in the larger scheme of things," said an analyst, not wishing to be identified. While Novelis did see an improvement in its net income and adjusted EBITDA per tonne on a sequential basis in the March quarter, analysts said the company's guidance has seen a marginal shift.
While the management indicated that they were confident of getting exemption on the import duties in February, in May, Novelis' CEO Steve Fisher said a 'neutral to positive' impact was expected considering certain trade deals between countries were bound to happen.
"We think that there will be a USMCA 2.0," he told analysts in May. "As soon as we have some of those (deals), particularly the USMCA 2.0, we will be going in that direction. So, you have to take this negative impact as something for the time being," he said.
The USMCA is a free trade agreement that came into effect in 2020 between the US, Mexico and Canada. After Trump came to power in January this year, steel and aluminium were one of the earliest to be subjected to tariffs.
"This is more of a sentiment thing because, if you see, there was not much of an impact even the last time, as steel safeguard duties helped offset the impact," another analyst said. On Monday, shares of

CM flying squad to probe MCM sanitation contract
Gurgaon: The CM flying squad has initiated an investigation into MCM's sanitation contract with Akanksha Enterprises, demanding documents such as tender details, contractor payments, and supervision records. The probe follows MCM's recent Rs 9.2 crore penalty on the contractor for inadequate service delivery. The contract, initially valid till Feb 2025, was extended to May. "A letter was sent to the MCM officials seeking details of the contract so that the CM flying squad could probe the matter. The civic body was given a week's time to probe the matter," said a ULB official privy to the matter. The contractor submitted an invoice of Rs 13.2 crore for services rendered during these three months. The representative of Akanksha Enterprises, Shishpal Rana, could not be reached despite repeated attempts by TOI. In April, the company also faced a Rs 4.3 crore penalty, during which they alleged bribery among senior MCM officials and payment delays, leading to the transfer of the then MCM commissioner. A sanitation standing committee reviewed the work of the agency between Feb 20, 2025, and May 19, 2025. Ahmedabad: A consumer commission here has ordered a tour operator to refund the full amount with interest, along with Rs 55,000 compensation, to an elderly couple whose tours to Japan and Europe could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This case involved Asha and Yogesh Doshi, residents of the Ambawadi area, who paid Rs 5.30 lakh in 2019 to Mumbai-based Neem Holidays Pvt Ltd for two tours — Japan and Europe in 2020. Due to the Covid pandemic, the tours were cancelled. When normalcy returned, they requested the same tour package, but the operator could not arrange it. Considering that people were still reeling under financial stress due to Covid, the couple did not demand their money back. In 2022, the tour operator offered them a 13-day package for Australia. They agreed and paid Rs 10,000 extra, but this did not take place. A year later, the operator offered the couple a tour to the United Kingdom. The couple refused this trip, yet their tickets were booked. They requested the company not to force them to accept this package tour and demanded their money back. As the operator did not respond, the couple sued it with the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad City to get the refund. The operator's lawyer appeared, but the reply was not filed. The commission said that since the money was lying with the operator, the complainants did not have any choice but to agree to the unreasonable request. However, compelling them for another tour against their wish was harassment. 1.6L water projects helping state ‘catch the rain'
Lucknow: The 'Catch The Rain 2025' campaign to promote water conservation in the state saw over 1.66 lakh projects launched between Mar 22 and Jun 13, including rainwater harvesting projects, rejuvenation of traditional water sources and massive afforestation efforts. A govt spokesperson said 17,557 projects related to rainwater harvesting were completed, while 16,561 were in progress. Under MGNREGA, 5,714 traditional water body revival works were completed and 5,093 were ongoing. In the same period, 3,825 soak pit and stabilisation pond projects were completed, with another 512 underway. Watershed development saw 66,135 completed works and 52,097 in progress. In addition to this, 20,922 intensive afforestation works were executed, with 23,089 more currently underway. "The Krishi Vigyan Kendras successfully conducted 228 awareness and training programmes, educating farmers, students, rural women and youth on water management techniques. These activities were implemented by the departments of agriculture and horticulture," the official said.
