Crypto income on I-T radar; department sends emails to individuals
The

Department has sent a communication to thousands of individuals who have undertaken
cryptocurrency
transactions but failed to reflect this income in their returns, official sources said Friday.
These transactions pertain to assessment years 2023-24 and 2024-25, they said.
The department and its policy-making body, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), suspect tax evasion and money laundering by certain "high-risk" people who are potentially using "unaccounted" income to invest in virtual digital assets (VDAs), commonly known as cryptocurrency.

Sources told PTI that the I-T Department has sent e-mails to thousands of defaulting people nudging them to file an updated Income Tax Return (ITR) if any income on account of
crypto
transactions has not been declared or mis-declared by them.
This communication is part of the NUDGE (Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable) campaign undertaken by the department with a philosophy of "trust taxpayers first" philosophy.

According to section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act (provided by the Finance Act of 2022), a flat tax rate of 30 per cent (plus applicable surcharge and cess) is levied on income from crypto transfers. The provision does not allow deduction of any expenses except the cost of acquisition.
Further, set-off of losses from crypto investment or trading is not allowed to be set off against any other income or for carry forward to subsequent years.
Sources indicated that data analytics done by the tax department has shown that a "significant" number of people have not filed the Schedule VDA (for crypto) in their ITRs, and such people were offering tax on the income earned at a lower rate or claiming cost indexation.
It is understood that the ITRs filed by taxpayers are being verified by the department with tax deducted at source (TDS) returns filed by various cryptocurrency exchanges (Virtual Asset Service Providers), and the defaulters may be selected for further "verification or scrutiny".
This is the third in the NUDGE series campaign undertaken by the I-T Department and the CBDT, where they gently remind taxpayers about their liabilities.
The previous two were related to seeking correct declarations on foreign assets and income by taxpayers and withdrawal of bogus claims of deduction under section 80GGC of the I-T Act.

Beed man arrested for snatching gold chains
Pune: The Dighi police arrested Siddharth Jadhav (24) of Shirur in Beed district for snatching gold chains from women and men, all warkaris, during the palkhi procession of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj around 9am on Friday on Pune-Alandi Road. The Dighi police recovered 10 gold chains worth Rs9 lakh from his possession. Police said that a 60-year-old warkari from Panvel raised an alarm after Jadhav snatched his gold chain. Police personnel on bandobast duty as well as people apprehended Jadhav on the spot. "After apprehending Jadhav, we found 10 gold chains with him. We took him to the police station and waited for complaints from the people. Within a few minutes, eight women and a man walked into the police station with their complaints stating that someone snatched their gold chains taking advantage of the crowded situation. Our team showed them the recovery, and all of them identified their jewellery," an officer from Dighi police said. "Jadhav came to Pune from Beed to snatch chains from the warkaris during the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. We suspect that he might have snatched more chains. We are questioning him on this," the officer said. Strict action will be taken against projects lacking proper permissions, says HYDRAA chief
Hyderabad: At the Times Home Hunt Property Expo held recently, Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) commissioner A V Ranganath cautioned that any new projects lacking proper permissions or built on encroached land will face strict action. 'Only layouts approved before HYDRAA's formation on July 19 last year will be exempt. All others must comply with current regulations,' said Ranganath, noting that unchecked construction contributed significantly to urban issues like flooding and traffic congestion. HYDRAA was set up not just as a watchdog, he said, but also as a proactive body aimed at promoting sustainable and responsible urban development. 'HYDRAA is not just about demolitions. We are focused on creating a healthier, more environmentally conscious real estate ecosystem,' Ranganath added. The authority is working closely with other agencies to rejuvenate lakes, address urban flooding, and improve drainage infrastructure. Patil writes to CM on mining scams, BJP questions timing
Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously."
